  1. Following the successful design of one my cousin built. I started on a new creation. It involved the chassis from one of these Thames van by David, on Flickr and a V8 of some sort So I got a chassis 5 17-04-2016 5-59-18 PM 4 17-04-2016 3-52-51 PM As these vans are forward control, I cut about 2 feet off the front - and converted it to rack and pinion (thanks to an Avenger) you can see the rack ready in these pictures. Also at about this time I got these wheels and tyres for $50 from the McLeans Island Swapmeet - these vans are standard Ford 5 stud, stud pattern. I also got a Bedford diff (more on that later) which very nearly fitted the springs. 7 17-04-2016 3-52-55 PM
  2. Here's a build from way back in the day - I finally found an old photo album I had lost - It may be of interest to some... It starts when I was 14 and lived on a farm in Mid Canterbury by the beach. I decided I wanted to build a beach buggy - visited the local wrecker and told him so, looking for suitable chassis to base it on. He said "How about this Trekka I have here" I said OK (not knowing anything about them) I also said I don't have the $60 you want for it, he said "Would you like a job?" The deal was done, so 1 Trekka chassis + a Humber 80 for the motor and box turned into this with my fathers help. 1 20-04-2013 8-04-16 PM 20-04-2013 8-04-16 PM This equated to many happy years of sideways driving around the farm / scaring my friends / rolled it once etc. But I decided that I needed more POWER - so here is the story of what came next.
  3. Saw this http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=1060417448 --- must fix body first , must fix body first - repeat after me!!!
  4. Check out this guy for bearings http://www.bowdenengineparts.co.nz/pdf/bearings.pdf he seem to have what you need for $50 - great guy to deal with.
  5. Well its been 4 months and no progress - life gets in the way! Got a few hours this weekend and did this. Tacked the new inner sill in IMG_6576 Over the break did another order to Germany and got these new inner wheel arches, at about 15 euro each I couldn't pass them up IMG_6578 Decided if was better to just use it for a repair section - a lot less work then unpicking the whole thing. IMG_6580 Ready to stick in - tacked up the top join but the original steel is so very thin I need to get some .6mm wire for the MIG before I go much further. IMAG0698 But at least some progress. It will be another month before I get another chance now
  6. Also remember that the gearbox/dif share the oil with the engine, be prepared for a crankshaft grind and bearings as well! (Just ask GuyWithAvaiators )
  7. Yes clutch can be done in place - you do need a special puller for the flywheel.
  8. From about '73 they went to a mechanical pump and alternator. (and inboard CV's instead of the rubber cross joints)
  9. That's never good news with one of these, I suggest you get a copy of a workshop manual and start with the clutch, it's about the only bit of the driveline that can be serviced (just) with the engine in.
  10. Check that the gear selector shaft is connected to the gearbox - the pin sometimes falls out
  11. There is not much that can go wrong with these gearboxes that can completely remove drive with out it making a lot of horrible noises! Does it feel like its going into gear at all? Are both the drive-shafts connected to each side of the gearbox? (look down the back of the engine with a torch) Unfortunately unless it's a completely worn out clutch plate (possible!) you are in for engine removal to fix anything else. How is the rust in the body?
  12. That make more sense, it's prob just a bulb then!
  13. Reverse lights??? there are none on one of these.
  14. It looked great - there were many confused looks at the Toyota - it's cool

  18. I have seen it sitting in the high 90's at the housing, do make sure you have the flat cap (no spring) on the rad and the normal cap on the overflow bottle
  19. Good job guys, get yourself one of these http://www.jaycar.co.nz/Test-%26-Measurement/Thermometers/Non-Contact/Mini-Non-Contact-IR-IP67-Thermometer/p/QM7218 and check the temp at the thermostat housing and compare with the bottom of the Radiator to see what the actual temp is and how well the radiator is working.
  20. Yep it would seem so, ever panel or part I take off is rusty on the inside - no thought to corrosion protection at all. That panel I had made is one of the few you cannot buy - luckily it was a simple shape. Also I had an offer out of the blue, of a spot welder to borrow so that will make things soo much easier!
  21. So here it is on its side showing how bad this bit is IMG_5552 and after I removed it IMG_5555 IMG_5564 got this folded up IMG_5563 test fit IMG_5565 weld it on IMG_5568 Finished, with the floor trial fitted IMG_5571
  22. You are welcome to come over to Kaiapoi and chop some steel off this thing, roof is not rusty -bonnet is ok IMG_1194 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr
  23. Great to meet you today at the Christchurch swap-meet, The bike looks absolutely stunning in real life, well done on the ride.
  24. That hole should/must have a plug in it, otherwise the head gasket will leak. Any engine re-conditioner can fix for not much This is what it should be like IMAG0445 by GuyWithAviators, on Flickr
