Daves new school holden shambles. (Is this project oldschool yet?)
Muncie replied to Muncie's topic in Other Projects
After pulling everything apart it was obviously leaking at the front port and rear port so I sat down and sanded the shit out of it till everything was nice and flat and shiny. The original O ring setup was garbage so I welded the parts where it could leak between cylinders and filled the other voids with half a tube of grey silicone.- 741 replies

I'm going to try lashes of sealant not to fix it but so I can bodge good enough to hit the fathers day drags and try get a pass or 2 In before the WOF runs out ...... days before OS DRAG DAY. It should be quick If I can get there 4th gear is freight train mode now it wasn't last few times.- 741 replies

I'm learning to take on everything said (when I can afford to.) In this thread i end up saving time and effort. So will save my money rather than try with cork and see what it costs to get my other manifold plenum reversed so it all matches the top cover and lower section.- 741 replies

I'm going to try making cork gaskets there's not enough flange to machine it down unfortunately. If no dice it's build a new one time.- 741 replies

Can it be saved Unsure.....probably not worth effort, I have the original manifold top I might pay someone as I used about $90 bucks of argon and warped it terribly welding up after someone else had a squirt at it before me. The warping could also be what's messing with IAC as well. Might be binding as it steps on to the seat.- 741 replies

Last ditch bodge I stuck some aluminium welding wire under the gasket to try get a bit of extra squish out of it. Did it work? No, it's now worse than ever. Oh well I fixed a few exhaust leaks so I got some success for evening.- 741 replies

One last attempt at chasing this bloody leak before give up on this manifold.... Lid off see if anything stands out, yup lid rocks forward and backwards once bolts are backed out found the source flap disc clearance applied now it rocks side to side. So it's basically banana shaped. Shit.- 741 replies

Right I've got a shitty manifold leak its not loud but I can hear it I used those shitty gaskets that came with the gasket set originally as I didn't actually think the engine would last 5 minutes, your supposed to use MLS gaskets for turbos due to the pressures guessing I'd be seeing the 15psi in the exhaust side of system which would just chew that weird permatec gaskets apart. All good though I've got some other stuff to do with exhaust that needed manifolds off anyway. Car will be at drag day but unsure if I'll be racing as I need a wof before then it all may get to hard to achieve. Mace engineering to rescue with cheap Correct MLS gaskets. At this stage I've got some exhaust shit to do and tidy up a tune for it and its solid working thing......... guess cert is next step, never got a car through to that stage before normally get bored and sell them.- 741 replies

Boring update but necessary, bought some new tyres for the front today as the rears have been a bit cooked with all this "road tuning" so now im running a 235 35 19 on the front they clear everything and I've ditched the 5mm spacers that have passed 4 WOF's. The 245 40 19s were just touching the plastics inside the guards at full lock slightly so they got moved down back. and im starting to think lowering might be on cards soon. It's dropped the front a heap and I promptly slammed the intercooler and exhaust into the road leaving the tyre shop. Now I have an exhaust leak FML. Mental note I can't take driveways at pace anymore nor straight on I might need a warning sticker on dash- 741 replies

Did fathers day things in the car today, loaded up cars specs in to Torque pro App and tried to do 1/4 mile ended up backing out early because I was going way to bloody fast with a really soft start to preserve the 4L60E. Did get an estimated horsepower though which shows she's making some steam! Lots of driving around now it's not bad on gas surprisingly still has an issue pulling away from idle you can drive through it pretty sure it's injector dead time related so have a new map built with that upped and trans line pressure and shift times dropped.- 741 replies

I'm keen for that should the crank fall out.

Hope those bends work out under alternator, does sound like an opertunity to 3D print a ducted carbon reinforced alternator cooling unit. Failing that Cermacrome coating by Procoat in Auckland is amazing at reflecting heat away or keeping it in if you do headers in it just looks like stainless. Hoping I can line up beside you at drag day and check out your tail lights down the track.

Well shit...... unplugged iac once it had settled to a 900rpm idle then did some driving around sure enough it ended up at 1400rpm again. Vacuum leak it is. New gaskets and appointment with a straight edge it is. In other news I've bought more v bands and bends to remove turbo so I can get a wof.- 741 replies

@fletch I did aactually check that a few weeks ago it fits the bill as been the fault, everything is as it should be i had a spare loom so the wiring is all factory colours from the extension. Coming to think of it I should just unplug it when it's idling correctly and see if it ramps up still.- 741 replies

Still got a high idle and a squeek coming from somewhere when on boost, idle is actually fine cold and progressively gets higher as it warms before it settles at 1350rpm and just stays there. 7th time manifold off? Is it time to give up on this particular inlet manifold..... probably, I have the stock one I could cut up and do a nicer job of I might throw some gaskets at it first incase I've pinched something not resorted to RTV yet.- 741 replies

Started doing fuel reg upgrade ordered wrong hose tails I'll eventually go to a different fuel rail so this is all proof of concept so it can be road tuned. Will have to hold to smaller hose tails arrive. Have done speedflow AN6 for return as had those parts in my stash. Was able to squeeze the hose over larger tail but I can see it failing and starting a huge fire so I'll wait it actually split sitting over night so I'm glad I didn't fuck around and find out. Hopefully this evens out the fueling which is rich as fuck at idle and close enough to leave alone at 6000rpm.- 741 replies

Checked my last Wof sheet have only done 1500 k's since last wof. Wof expires on 1st of December that's a pain in butt as it's ready to race once I fit new fuel pressure regulator. I'll probably have to take turbo off and get another Wof if I want to be at OS Drag day. If I roll up to Wof shop with turbo and intercooler gone but running turbo manifolds wonder how I'll fare? Its easy enough to just bypass from v band from turbo straight to exhaust with a small adapter. Bugger going right back to stock manifolds way to much work if I don't need too.- 741 replies

2-1 for the win you can make a lawn mower engine sound good surely some options out there, are Harris pipes still a thing?

Same arms no changes other than moving flange hub mounts to inboard 30mm. Basically mount arm in jig remove 30mm strip and weld a replacement flange on shortened up stuff to suit. I just hate the piss week offset the rear has to use up the space available how I'd like rims are $1900 each.

What's the go with narrowing track on an independent rear car? If you've seen my commodore thread I've been mucking around with BMW wheels to get the width I want under the ass. How much hard work would it be to cert rear arms if I were to cut back the mounting flange for the hub then have a new one laser cut and basically remove 30mm track per side to get the tyres tucking back under? Yes I know it sounds like a lot of work but for me any chance to break out the welder and "meditate" is a good thing 100% reversible unlike pumping the guards etc

Did some stuff that feels insignificant but has made this thing way nicer. Took the crossover pipe out and cut 10mm out of the up pipe to get it away from the subframe as it makes a ridiculously loud rattle as it only just touches the but enough to drive me mental, 2 hours later rattle is 99% gone I think what's left is probably something to do with the exhaust which is due its own work. I installed a check valve in the brake vacuum hose. This thing occasionally stalls still bugger me what a luxury brakes are when the engine stops halfway through a turn. I put gas in it! At a petrol station I know amazing right? then drove it around to get dinner and got pulled over for MY LED headlights and sent on my way with a friendly recommendation to put the stock ones back in which I will. I'm going to put the other wheels back on for now this thing blazes the 275's without too much effort so I will stick some better shocks in and worry about looks later cert shit and all. Now it's had a good run it's running a heap better.- 741 replies

I'm still mucking around with tunerpro and Delco buggery with some reasonable success but still some problems. If anyone has or knows their way around this stuff I'd like to bounce ideas around.
