  1. My aw11 failed its warrant for rust in the sills and was given a structural rust ticket. I did the repair myself and got panel beater to sign off the paper then took it back to the plave it failed I guess if you could find a friendly panel beater that would be your best option. Saying that I never found out if the garages could see why it previously failed a warrant
  2. If all goes to plan I should be able to make it for my first time. Just got to replace my cambelt and waterpump
  3. Once it was all painted up I went back to the Panel Beater who had done some work on my car before. I showed him the pictures of what I had done and mentioned that my dad who was a fitter did the welding, he said he would be happy to stamp and sign it off aslong as I said to the WOF guy that they did it. Over all I was pretty happy with how it turned out considering it was my first time doing panel work and I certain got better towards the end. All it took was alot of patience and two weeks of my holidays, atleast I did something productive. Hopefully next week ill have another update with some other work ive been doing. Also been thinking about passing by the Wellington meet sometime soon.
  4. Well I think its about time to update this is been a while since ive posted. I decided to tackle the rust myself because being a student and Dutch im a bit of a tight ass. Also the last work I got done from a panel beater wasnt all that great for what I payed. Once I got my hands on a mig welder and some gas I cracked into finding how bad this rust was. I started stripping back the passengers side sill, this is what I found It Turns out it's been repaired before and as usual its a half as job. Someones just tacked a bit of steel on top and bogged it over. So out came the grinder..... Once I was down to decent steel all around I started welding up some pin holes Some zinc spray for protection, thankfully the inner sill was in great shape. I then made a cardboard template and few steel profiles and got my old man to fold up a patch at work. I then spent a good hour adjusting it till it would fit better just with a pipe in the vice and a hammer. Heres a pic from when most of it was tacked on, we were still getting the welder set up right here and the auto darkening helmet kept flickering so the welds were the tidiest. In the end I think it turned out pretty good considering its the first time ive done panel work. Certainly alot better than it was before anyway. Then It was time to start on the driver side, thankfully the damage on this side wasnt much worse but it did require 4 patches. Anyway heres the pics
  5. Just got a warrant, super stoked. Ill update the buildthread tonight
  6. bcdirect.co.nz sell the unifilter branded ones, I got a unifilter pod filter from them through work (Supercheap auto) but im pretty sure you can order direct.
  7. I was hoping you would see this KPR. Do you think this would flow better than the current muffler? I guess the flow depends on how many baffles in it? Also what sort of size would you go up to? Cheers Nick
  8. Hey im after some advice on replacing the muffler in my NA 4AGE MR2. The current original muffler has rusted out so im looking for a replacement that would be suitable but also sound good. Heres a picture of the current setup its a 2 inch system with one small muffler about 250mm long then into a 800mm long muffler which is the one im looking at replacing. I have had a look around and the best option I have found so far was this one here http://www.chase.co.nz/part/700/0/RD3812 which is $172. This is a 2.25 inlet outlet which I have read is the best size for a NA 4age so I would have to put in a reducer, but this would also allow for a future 2.25 upgrade. I just have a few questions as this is a truck muffler would it still sound descent? Also would it matter if used a standard shorter box muffler instead of a long cylinder one? Any advice would be muchly appreciated.
  9. Thanks for your reply man, I owe you a beer. That makes much more sense considering the WOF guy didnt even mention it to my dad who took it in just showed him the spots he wasnt happy with. I guess I should really go over and check with the warrant guy before I make any decisions. Im definatly not one to do shitty repairs though, I was just hoping I could get thorugh a warrant so I could still get to uni and back and fix it in the holidays when I have time. I understand why it failed as I would fail it as well. Again thanks for your replies it really helps. Cheers Nick
  10. Thanks for the reply man, Yeah it is a bummer, ill go around to a few place to see how much it will be for them to do it or if they will sign it off. The repair itself shouldnt be to hard as it is all pretty isolated and basic shapes. Ive got a mig welder I can get my hands on and my old mans a fitter and turner although hes never done any panel work. You wouldnt happen to know any good places to a get a CO2 bottle checked and filled in Wellington I heard wormalds do it
  11. I have some not so good news I got my old man to take the MR2 in for a warrant as he supposibly knew the guy. Turns out it failed on the muffler, headlight bulb and rust in the sills. I knew the rust was in the sills but wanted to see if it would still get a warrant as I dont have time at the moment to fix it properly. Anyways car comes back with this The whole reason why i got him to take it in was to avoid this shit, im gueesing this is what you call a rust ticket? The dude didnt even mention it to my dad just said where it needed to be repaired. Im not even sure what this fully means will I have to get everything repaired by a panelbeater? Would it be ok if I did the work myself took pictures and shit and showed a panelbeater before painting it? Any knowledge or tips here would be great.
  12. Cheers guys. Cars just at the panel beaters now getting some rust repaired. Was driving it around for a couple weeks with no wipper motor or fan unit but winter has put an end to doing that. Ive got a warrant in a few weeks just got to hope the list aint to long as its my daily

  14. Thought I would finally put a build thread up AW11 my first car. Its been two months since I got it from auckland, I managed to fly up there and drive down in one day with no trouble. Plans are to give it a tidy up, make a few small changes/improvements but keep it mainly stock. Enough talk heres some pics: Also discuss: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/38219-nicks-1985-mr2-aw11-discussion/ Just after I brought it pretty dirty and sad looking First thing I did was give it a good wash, polish and wax (Just a slight difference, took a good 1.5 days) Started on the wheels. Sadly brake dust had eated through the clear and oxidised the alloy underneath so had to strip it all off. After paint stripper Metal conditioner working its magic After metal Ready(Phosphoric acid), pretty much removed any left over break dust and soften the surface off the alloy which made it much easier to polish. More pics to come for after polishing How it looks now outside work. Whats been done so far: Polished wheels and paint Cleaned up the rear trim- sanded down with 400-800-1600-2000-Polish New Pioneer stereo and speakers Steam clean engine Bead blasted cam covers Replaced from Front sway bar bushes Blasted and painted one window wiper arm Still left to do: New Accelerator cable Jimi backet Replace master cylinder New timing belt Fix exhaust- Missing one tip Fix play in rear right wheel Replace shitty old foam filter with a unifilter Install new painted and polished cam covers Few paint touchups mainly bumpers Repaint side mirrors
  15. Which store do you work at? I just got one at the alicetown store. Also has anyone tried the new septone range that is replacing the 3m paint.
  16. I went to the nissan wreckers today and the utes still there, its in pretty bad shape looks like someones just been throwing rocks at it. Anyway I went and asked the guy in the workshop and he said the owner wasnt there and he wouldnt even think about parting with it.
  17. Thanks for that Borgweiser. I guess that explain why its been there for so long.
  18. Ok i found it on google maps. Ill go have a look at it tommorrow
  19. Ive heard about one over in seeview apparently it is near a nissan garage. I might go have alook tomorow and see if i can find it.
  20. Im in Wellington. If i could i would go around there and have a look but its just a bit to far away. Im really not to fussed about the model but i do want it for a project some something which needs work is ideally what i want. Cheers
  21. I would definatly prefer a 1200 72-83, but i would consider other models with or without a wellsidelong as its for the right price. I dont really care on the condition as long as its not a complete rust bucket as i am planning to do a full restore. Cheers
  22. Yeah ive told him im defiantly interested but i just don't have the funds to offer what he wants sadly
  23. Hey thanks for the replies. Just had a look on Google maps and it looks huge. Ill have to stop by when im going up north next. I guess thats another dead end in trying to find a ute. Cheers
  24. Hey just wondering if anyone can confirm that Wilf is a caryard in Dannevirk or the guy who owns it. Ive seen it mentioned a few times on this and other forums. Also does anyone know if he has any Datsun utes there. Cheers Nick
