Popular Post oldrx7
Will start a thread for this, although its not gonna be much of a build as such, more of a make a tweak here n there sort of thing; Aquired this about 2 months ago now, flew to Dunedin on a saturday morning to check it out and got back to Auckland on Sunday afternoon. 1600 odd km's in just over 24 hours. Not bad for an old girl. Shat the alternator on the way home - I blame the gilmer belt thingy being done up too buggery. With the help of Nick Ritchie outside his house in Palmy at 7am Sunday morning he donated a spare battery so I could at least get home. Sorted the alternator shortly after arrival in Auckland too, Got an internal regulated one now, had a auto sparky mate sort the three-to-two pin wiring change as fiddling with wiring scares me. Since these pics I've taken off the different colour plasti coat off the rear wheels, Taken off the work shop stickers front n rear fitted my P/Plate (hasn't been on a car since 2008 lol). sorted a front valance (off being tidied up currently) Plans are: looking at wheel options, find / purchase the sill chrome pieces for the front guards, a few suspension mods just to get the front a bit lower. Although the front crossmember already sits just under 100mm so it wont be going too much lower than this sadly. Rx4/929's must have big guards or something but oh well. Long term plans are; long term trouble free motoring Diff upgrade IDA or some sort of interesting looking side draft set up. Engine Rebuild at some stage surely haha. Popular Post oldrx7
So had a little shopping spree while I was off work for two weeks. Got a LSD, thanks to Gnarlydude to bringing it up from Palmerston North to Hamilton! It's a 26 spline, but will look into getting some 24 spline side gears from Australia and getting them installed, then it'll be a bolt in upgrade. Saw the wheels on trademe and couldn't resist, not often you see these in 4x110! The wheels will eventually get widened to 7" and 8" i'm thinking, rear guards have a fair bit of space; hopefully being only 13" they wont look too funny or small on such a large car. Couldn't help to see what they look like

oldrx7
thinking i'll be getting 185/60/13's. I've got some old 205/60/13's that i'll get them to test fit and see. Gonna be tight!
Popular Post oldrx7
so went with the 185/60/13's, not much stretch at all on the front, and only a little on the rear. Yet to have the car fully weighed down, but looks like clearance at the back will be all good - just! Guard gap is still bugging me a bit, but can't really go much lower without major mods unfortunately. Also gave up with my friend who was going to tidy up the valance for a cash job, he's way to busy and it looked lame without it on - so just sprayed it matt black and fitted it. Doesn't line up perfectly but looks better with it than without it. //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/53792-oldrx7s-1977-mazda-929-wagon-discussions/
Popular Post oldrx7
Owned this just over a year now - still going good! Tracked down some head light trims recently and have hopefully tracked down the two sill chrome pieces I'm missing (for not an insane price). From looking at Rx4s at various events I'd noticed that my grill had been painted a light silver, and most I've noticed seem to be a darker gun metal type colour, so I decided to paint it a darker silver and keep the lighter silver as an outline. I recon it looks sweet, in combo with the grill headlight trims changes the front end look a fair bit see pix for a comparison https://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/53792-oldrx7s-1977-mazda-929-wagon-discussions/
Popular Post oldrx7
so the front ride height has always bugged me since getting this - so the last couple of weeks i’ve been sorting it out got the old cobra springs out that i’d cut a coil out of and took them to archers to get some new slightly lower springs made up, shocks ended up being a bit harder to sort, no places seemed to make standard inserts for these anymore , so took the strut and spring into autolighn and asked them to find a shock to suit, they used a trueno shock slightly modded to suit, picked the struts up this morning and got them back in the car today Stoked on how it’s sitting now - makes the guard gap less large and the front cross-member is 50mm off the dirt so no chance of going lower from this - some 165/65/13 tyres on the fronts also have helped the front look see ya’ll at drag day
Popular Post oldrx7
So after having numerous moments thinking the exhaust / floor / crossmember was going to be damaged / destroyed due to the ride height being this: I've decided to get some 17's to help with ground clearance - helps a lot and they don't look too bad IMO, but will be keeping the 13's and change them up everynow and then depending on where i'm driving to i suppose!

Popular Post oldrx7
Had a few busy weekends recently with this. Last wof was noted that I should replace the lower arm balljoints. And I also noticed one of the tierod ends had split the rubber too, so while I've been focusing on the gearbox and clutch replacement I'd also ordered replacement tierod ends x4 and 2x balljoints. Pressed out the old and pressed in the new. Got the new tie rod ends on easy enough, now upon installation though I've noticed the nut doesn't go on far enough for the split pin to through the hole on the tie rod end thread, so will have to sort new castle nuts or slot the ones i've got a bit deeper. I'd sourced a 5 speed box to replace my 4 speed, but upon putting this in the car (with some help from some GC's) i noticed that the gearbox crossmember would need modifying, plus the clutch slave cylinder wouldn't line up so would have to buy a new one. Can't be f'd with all that (plus being a conversion, nothing that I've bought for the car so far bolts up) so decided to just put back in the 4 speed for now/probably forever. Still to do: Get tie rod end split pins in - Grease up tie rod ends Double check all bolts tightened/torqued up Wheel alignment Bleed brakes Bleed clutch Test clutch Hopefully done for drag day!
Popular Post oldrx7
So, some good news with the tie rod ends - sure enough theres a couple of kinds of them over the years the 929/rx4 was made, and mine are obsolete. Read a few options about either machining out the knuckles or machining down the tie rod ends, but I figured I’d give something else a try. the old tie rod ends themsleves were still working and moving fine, it was just the boots that had split, so I took the boots off the news one I’d bought and installed them on my old ones making sure to be careful with the springs and clips to not split the boots. All installed nicely now, just need to grease them up and find the old castle nuts in the garage somewhere , or buy some new ones
Popular Post oldrx7
So the clutch / gearbox ended up being not so straight forward ... Turns out 4 speed boxes run a different release bearing and clutch fork to the old 5 speed type boxes, so I ended up with the 4 speed in and out 4 times till i finally had the right combo of bearing, clutch fork and fork pivot adjustment spot on so the clutch would fully engage and release properly. The cars finally down on wheels again, needs a wash, and have booked a wof for tomorrow morning (fingers crossed) Added some pin-stripes (thanks archetype) - they follow the body crease, IMO it add's a nice subtle touch.
