Hi, thought I should put my Mk3 zephyr special up as its the only one of my classics that actually is legal, runs (runs well) and gets driven. Decided that as she's going to nats I should a bit of house work on her i.e installing the extractors and twin carbs that I've had in the garage for the last 3 years but done nothing with, and a set of rims..

Small amount of history.. wanted a zed since time immemorial and one finally came up while was still living in aus and actually earning money that I could spend. Gf's uncle in nelson decided to sell up in leu of his mums mint mk4 escort with only 60k on the clock, so gave me a deal.. Worked out well as when I came home a year later I had something to drive which I did for 2 years bumping the miles to 90+ and unfortunaltey for the zed it had to sit outside in the corrosive brighton air, has done ok but the sea has left its mark with bits of surface rust popping up here and there.. anyway here's some pics and stuff..

As I bought her, has been painted red, original in peppermint green which I'd prefer..

*edit.. also If you look close you can see the rims have different offset f to r which kills me a bit, hence the changing rims

A number of small teething problems came along with her, fuel leaks, half clogged radiator, stuffed door seal etc all easily fixed, but she made it from nelson to chch like this so I can only figure that she'll do the nats mish with ease..

So first wof was one rod end and front lower inner bushes, nice and easy.. then once winter came she struggled to achieve temp, dont think the stat had ever been changed as it still had the original ford unit, kept it for posterity. Then blew the water pump, bought a rebuild kit for $60 2 hours later Bob is my uncle.. Then at the end of 2011 started leaking water at the back of the block..

resulted in this

engine out all for a 5 min repair job, had I known there were two frost plugs I would have done both..

Not bad for a years driving of a supposedly unreliable pommie car ( I was later to find out that apparently zephyrs aren't lumped in that category and that the zephyr six is renowned for being one of the best motors ford ever built)

So fast forward to Oct last year and after 2 years faultless service and wofs bar a dodgy drive shaft(out of balance and bent from factory), drive to SI nats in hamner, again driving without issue.. fails a warrant, pretty badly too, right outer rod end, front wheel bearings, rusty brake lines and a grabbing rear drum all fairly easily to fix.. couldn't get a tie rod before the last meet of the year so managed to persuade my wof guy to let me away one more term so I could get mine rebuilt, good guy that.. pics..

old vs new

bearings looked pretty good to me, but they were definitley rumbling..

Last weekend went about changing a couple of things in the engine bay..

inlet was off before I remembered to take a pic

IMAG2001_zps6hn0wbgp.jpg

as per usual, snapped the last two bolts, re-tapped easy enough

unlike aus, none of the major hardware stores seem to stock any imperial bolts, bit frustrating esp on a sunday, so I extended the existing thread

on the ones I had

this is how it will end up looking, just got to rig the throttle and fuel line up for a second carb..

These are the rims I scored from the Mcleans island swap meet.

IMAG2020_zpscwbdserj.jpg

Got the them for cheaper than you can buy one new, and these are brand new off a 2013 Qashqai. In trying them on, as per usual with fwd rims, the massive positive offset kept them way inside the guards by about 60mm and 70mm fr and r.. I was gonna just run some spacers but for the price it was cheaper and safer just to get the centers reversed (hundy per rim)

got them back for a test fit with zero offset..

IMAG2044_zpsftmgicov.jpg

think this is the look I'll try for eventually (ford GT caps)

IMAG2043_zpslytsl9au.jpg

and then on the car, think I'll have to add a bit of low to the equation and also 10mm negative offset as theres still 20mm of gap at the back. I can always roll the fronts if I get some rub..  apparently the zephyr responds well to a couple of coils being removed, or so the gurus say anyway..

Been busy trying to sort out a linkage for the twin carbs I'm putting on.. from what I can find, nobody makes a bolt on solution. The only thing remotely close is for a twin zenith setup on a sunbeam rapier (and I think a couple of other beams, Alpine etc) so I set about copying this solution..

Pic dump,

The pic below shows a setup from a rapier, the yellow dotted line is the two throttle shafts in line with each other, sunbeams solution (completely different from what I was initially going to do) is take the drive fro the second carb directly from the TS of the first carb (the yellow u shape) which avoids the main jet location by using the u shape you can see, it then connects it directly to the secon carb ts with some sort of flexi drive (blue dotted line).. I couldn't for the life of me find just that particular set up second hand or new so had to do a couple of mods to my own carbs to match Sunbeams.. From what I can find Ford never used this setup on the zephyr preferring to go with a larger single 42mm choke on the Zodiac instead of 36mm like the Zephyr six..

zenithcarbs_zps725e0ed4.jpg

So there was a small amount of trial and error with this as I have no reference to how they attached the u linkage to the TS. Intially I was going to drill and tap the first carbs TS and thread a piece of brass rod to bolt in there. Looked like it was gonna be to hard and had read here and there that the soldering of brass worked well and was pretty strong so I opted to solder the piece on instead..

Here you can see where the TS would exit the throttle plate, and the proximity of the main jet to that point,

IMAG2034_zpswffs29bf.jpg

preparing to solder the extension on,

IMAG2035_zpsnyzz7sej.jpg

bit of machining,

IMAG2036_zpsfzkyrbnn.jpg

and hey presto, something..

IMAG2038_zpspvzfpnst.jpg

I took the liberty of threading and machining the extension so the adapter is locked in place,

IMAG2041_zpsiogn4avc.jpg

And whilst trying to push the adpater on, the extention snapped off.. not surprised really dunno why I thought it would be strong..

so I drilled and tapped the TS to accept a piece of threaded brass..

IMAG2086_zpsqaeid4wg.jpg

IMAG2087_zpsi1aruhen.jpg

bit of loctite in there and its way stronger than the solder, go figure

And there we have it, with the lack of room for any sort of fastener I had to machine a nut down to fit, doesn't have the largest amount of thread on there so I put some loctite on it plus I'll get a bit of epoxy in there as well, just in case..

IMAG2110_zpsb50e05c1.jpg

As for the drive to the other TS well, on the Sunbeam setup the carbs sit at the same height as each other but on my manifold they're offset height wise by about 15mm. On the sunbeam they use some sort of flexi cable, I've decided that the easiest option for me is to use some sort of spring threaded onto bolts at either end. I haven't, as yet, found a spring with enough torsional strength to do the job, maybe a v8 throttle spring will.. cheers

This is the idea I had for the linkage.. I did try a piece of stiff hose but it had to much flex and wouldn't open the second carb fully.

IMAG2126_zpsi5okpxou.jpg

I'd like to try one of those drill flexi drives but not real sure how I would mount it, for the springs you can see here I just machined down a bolt and a bit of brass and jammed them on there. Now just gotta figure out the other end..

Right, so as per this post

Why not try some little UJ's?

44conect.JPG

http://www.mygear.co.nz/aluminum-universal-joint-connector-u-joint

I flagged all my half baked ideas and went down this track. Went into acorn models on thurs and bought a couple of boat propshaft unis, while they're plastic/brass and not aluminium the guy assures me that they will be up to the task of turning a throttle shaft..

Dang.. forgot to turn fotobucket back on.. will upload some pics tomorrow, has worked anyway and very well too  :-D

So as I was going to go down the spring route, I filled a couple of springs with silicon and left them to dry on the assumption that it would increase torsional strength.. Fail, no different..

IMAG2138_zpskqcc5u7d.jpg

Turned up a fiiting to adapt the spring to the other carb.. scrapped,

IMAG2136_zpsrtsmigxf.jpg

IMAG2137_zpsscs1wleh.jpg

Bought some small uni's

IMAG2145_zpsesasvach.jpg

made a couple of connecting shafts..

IMAG2147_zpsqtsss1oa.jpg

Fitted them,

IMAG2146_zpsx45jljz0.jpg

installed everything, I'm a little worried about having plastic in the engine bay, hopefully they don't melt..

IMAG2153_zpse9mlzyra.jpg

wasn't running to well initially, like a sack of shit really. Mixture adjustment did nothing on #1 carb.. pulled the tops off and blew some air down all the bleeds/jets etc, and finally it ran smooth albeit with some hesitation. There's three holes for accel pump adjustment, was in the center but moved by mistake to the leanest one so has a rather large stall halfway across a busy roundabout with impatient people beeping at me hesitation.. will move it to the richest ones this week. Has some great noises coming from the engine bay now, am gonna buy some small sieves and use the mesh over the carbs till I get some proppa gear. Deff runs better, not as fast as I imagined, but a bit more urgency and winds out far easier than before..

Got some tyres on sat, got a bit worried that I'd overdone the dish when a saw how much rubber overhung the edge of the rim.. but bless me, has worked out good. Put them rims on..

IMAG2151_zpsqco4ujhd.jpg

Needs a fair amount of low, might ping one or two coils on the front this week some time when I'm painting the rims..  needs to low ride but

Bit of a pictureless update,  gave the zed a service, plugs, filter etc then took her for a 100km burn pre nats, temp stayed good, bit of a nasty hesitation but I drilled out the accel pump jets when I got home and seemed to fix it mostly.. Think I'm gonna have to wear ear muffs coz fuck me its noisy..

Aaand motherfucken propshaft is vibrating round a hundy again gosh darn it, took it off and there is a bit of slack in the uni's.. gonna take it in tomorrow and see if they can do and emergency repair for me..

Edit* oh, and was gonna clip some coils this afternoon but then I need an alignment which I don't have enough time for, also did a half weld on my exhaust which looks super shit as it was windy and kept blowing the gas away haha.. oh well

So i took the propshaft in and they reckoned it was badly bent at the back, wtf!!   They straightened it just before the hamner meet last year and that plus a couple of trips round the city is all the driving I've done, seemed to happen just before I got on the motorway yesterday.. pretty stumped, better not fail again..

Been a while, though I should update. Zed has been hibernating under a large tarp for the winter.. Was a pretty much flawless run up to nats in Marahau. Regular water checks and occasional oil checks were the most I did, returned about 11.5-12l per hundy which wasn't bad I thought, would prob be better with a bit of tuning. Drive shaft Is permanently bent from factory and repairable bar lots of money for a shit piece of equipment.. have a second had one from a six which is much bigger at the tail end. Mine had a gay tapered weak mk2 shaft, six is straight through with no taper = good. Also discovered while cruising over the hill to GB that my diff slops around a fair bit scuffing the tyres on the guards, would prob be fixed if I upgraded to urethane.. Other than that, she fully restored my faith in old cars and long distances, very chuffed.

So last weekend I decided to get another warrant as the reg just ran out in sept, rather drive her than have her on hold. Got the dodgy ball joint fixed, tried to start it and no joy real sluggish.. Uhh Ohh.. no spark, checked points leads plugs. Scratched my head a little, changed the coil and bingo still sluggish but jumped her and she started straight away but wont rev over say, 2k without massive carb flames. Check advance, out by about 10 deg no flames now but still popping out the carbs, must be lean. Only thing I can think of is I pretty much drained the tank coming home from nats so must have sucked some shit up and is blocking a jet somewhere, the result of no fuel filter for sure.. will set about cleaning them out this weekend and installing a filter. Looks like I'm out of time for a wof before xmas, will have to wait till next year.. Gonna look at some 2015 lows for shiz

Still struggled to to get her running right so I splashed out on a pertronix ignitor2 for the same price as an ignitor on the tard, literally took 5min to install.

IMAG0865_zpsasl7gey2.jpg

ran heaps better but still felt weak. Set of new plugs and of she went.. finally. Have discovered that the little plastic unis I bought for the carb linkage just aren't up to the task of turning another throttle shaft, especially when hot. There's a fair amount of flex going on with the second carb not opening fully and then not shutting fully on return.. gonna buy a couple of metal replacements this week..

Well.. thanks to Glen (felix) for posting these

download_zpss9t8t3is.jpg

10 bucks each and a minor mod to clear the fuel inlet on the back carb and I finally have a flexible linkage with absolutely no backlash.. Yay for me. Feels better to drive too, means that I spent the entire 1400km 2014 nats with one carb not working proerly..

She's a tight fit under the fuel line and doesn't look as nice as the uni's

Pictures update.. so now the weather's finally dried out it was time for the zed to go for her 1st wof in 2 years almost to the day.. and godammit she passed.. just have to do the steering idler for the next one, this car just blows my mind time and again. She's looking a little worse for wear tho, gonna have to break out the paint stripper this summer and redo the roof as it's crazed to buggery and wherever is doing that there's some redbrown coming through, which is everywhere. Some other patches are going to need some attention too before they get to bad. So glad it's an el nino summer this year..
