Popular Post sluggy Posted July 5, 2013 Popular Post Posted July 5, 2013 Discussion Thread here - //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/39149-slugs-strip-beetle/ Ive been lurking around here for a bit, thought I would share my project. I was running a 55 beetle down at the strip for a few years, after about 4 engine/gearbox combos I ran a best of 12.43@107mph. Anyway the last engine had a major meltdown due to some oiling/lack of maintenance/caring issues by me. So I decide its time to step up and go faster and start sourcing some bits to build a 4" bore turbo engine. Start looking at the car and there is a crap load of work to do to get it to handle the HP levels I am thinking, so I fall over this : out of the UK and buy it. It has a cage, 10" narrowed coil over rear end, comes with 930 CVs and 830M axles. Then I get an offer from the guy who is collecting parts for me out of the US that is to good to refuse and buy this : Which after 9 months now looks like this : Im still waiting on gearbox R and P so no real hurry. I picked up an Autronic ECU off Tardme, its dry sumped so have a peterson tank and priming remote oil filter holder. Twin setrab oil coolers. It will be running a custom porsche fan cooling set up. Have made some seat adjustments so I fit in the funny car cage, working on pedal placement. Engine specs are 84 x 101.6, pauter case, roller cam set up, moldex crank, venolia pistons, angle flow heads, CT comp oilless turbo, turbosmart valves and eboost, twin plate mcleod clutch. Still a long way to go, but the goal is 9 second 1/4s and street legal. 24 Quote
Popular Post sluggy Posted July 5, 2013 Author Popular Post Posted July 5, 2013 Here's a few more pics of the car New seat pan, had to lower it 6" to fit me in it, still need to get onto the yoga training to squeeze around bars. Interior, seats were originally done in the uk, hand formed alloy, doing the same with the redone seat Rear end, set up for 0 camber change Camshaft shot, it's a 5 piece case so unlike std VW cases the mains and cam bearings all run caps and can be changed without splitting the case Under bonnet set up. I'll update as it happens, it will be slow progress based on the last 10 months efforts.... 11 Quote
sluggy Posted July 13, 2013 Author Posted July 13, 2013 Did a bit of work on the car, rear guards all dzused up, just working on rear apron, one side to go... Once I have got this done Ill take the car back to my mates shop to sort the new seat and pedal position, get this set up then its wait time for the gearbox... 1 Quote
sluggy Posted July 24, 2013 Author Posted July 24, 2013 Intercooler arrived (Garret core 65mm in/out), waterpump, and I have a 20l fuel cell that will be the main water reservoir, plus a radiator mounted... somewhere. Basically the reservoir and pump will mount in the passengers rear seat area along with the pump (pump weighs 6 kg !!) Plus I need to try and squeeze the oil tank on that side too.Battery is under passengers side so add it all together with the oil in the tank and Im picking it will be about 45kgs of crap on that side. If I stuff a goat in there it will go someway to evening up my considerable bulk. Water set up will run - reservoir - pump - turbo - intercooler - radiator - reservoir. Maybe turbo IC will be the other way round depending on heat soak from the turbo, see how it pans out. The turbo is a bit of a trick unit, because it is oilless you can mount it on its side if you wanted, http://compturbo.com/spotlights/oil-less Anyway a couple of photos of stuff 3 Quote
sluggy Posted August 8, 2013 Author Posted August 8, 2013 Good news.... The engine and Gearbox are both heading this way, probably a month till they land then the fun really starts. Box is really tall 4.13 diff ratio 3.11/1.93/1.26/.89 so good for 140 - 150 mph in 4th at 7000 rpm with a 26" tire. Decided not to go for a spool, wasnt keen on potential axle / cv breakage and hitting walls, so it has a LSD. Dump pipe is just on to cover turbo, but probably will form the start of te exhaust Ready to roll. Only a month till Christmas !! 5 Quote
sluggy Posted September 16, 2013 Author Posted September 16, 2013 Been doing a bit on the car, sorting brake lines, putting in linelok and re routing the staging brake so it works on the rears. Also ripped out the old -6 alloy fuel lines and replaced with -10 feed and -8 return in stainless braided ptfe line. Mocked up radiator mounts ... Still a massive to do list but at least it's moving. Will get some pics. Running gear due on the 23rd of this month... 1 Quote
sluggy Posted October 30, 2013 Author Posted October 30, 2013 All the gear is finally here, second set of rears for street rubber (need some 4.5" wide chev pattern 15" rims for the front ), wheelie bars, gearbox and the motor. Been doing a bit of cutting and tucking to fit the gearbox, engine in soon. Its a bit distracting when I have work stuff to fix in the shed... So should have engine in the hole over the next couple of nights. Big plumbing list coming up... 7 Quote
sluggy Posted November 4, 2013 Author Posted November 4, 2013 Gearbox is in, need to modify the rear mount slightly and cut into the tunnel in the front to get the gearshift rod to line up. Axles are rifle drilled and 930 Porsche cvs. Wheelie bars, need to fab up a mount to make them remove able under the gearbox mount Rims to mount some radials on, they weigh 5 kgs each. 4 Quote
sluggy Posted November 5, 2013 Author Posted November 5, 2013 In, kind of, turbo is touching bar between two coil overs so I either very gently notch and re weld the bar, or shorten exhaust on the LHS slightly, leaning towards exhaust, weakening the bar doesn't seem like a smart idea. RH guard doesn't fit, needs to be clearanced around RH post box, and clearancing required around the throttle body. Lastly, hole required in rear valance for oil pump, it's a close thing but too close... Busting out the choppers tonight.... Chur. 7 Quote
sluggy Posted November 5, 2013 Author Posted November 5, 2013 Shit photo but you get the idea Self explanatory one... Quote
sluggy Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 Been getting stuff mounted and accumulating more bits. Work is still on the rear end at the moment, it will definitely be next season before it hits the track. Oil coolers and I/C are mounted, oil tank and water reservoir to go. Have the bulk of the electrical stuff in my possession, but it's a never ending money pit hence the overall slowness of the build... Here's the gearbox/sissy stick mount from the house of TBR The car will be on the Townsend Brotherz Racing (TBR) stand as a work in progress at the 4 and rotang show this Saturday, so have a gander if you are there !! 3 Quote
sluggy Posted January 31, 2014 Author Posted January 31, 2014 Playing with electrics, trying to get all this working together this weekend, fortunately i also have full growlers in a nearby fridge... Quote
sluggy Posted May 11, 2014 Author Posted May 11, 2014 This has been really slow, car has been getting some stuff done, brackets and mounts and stuff, and basically like the rest of the build it has been painfully slow. But I have been assured Ill have the car back by the end of the month (that'll be 5 months). Frustrating as fuck, but anyway, since everything has been sitting forever rust is running rampant, so I stripped the engine down to the block to sort out head studs and cylinders and getting the turbo exhaust housing all coated by HPC this week. Since I bought the engine I hadn't really seen the pistons etc, so here's a couple of snaps. Pretty mega Conrod depth too compared to what I'm used to with these. Pistons are Venolia and the rods are Pauter. And a chamber shot, it is about 8:1 static based on what I measured. 3 Quote
sluggy Posted June 1, 2014 Author Posted June 1, 2014 Coating done to cylinders and exhaust housing thanks to HPC in Auckland. HPC are doing all the coating, powder coating on the car. Shameless plug !! 1 Quote
sluggy Posted June 4, 2014 Author Posted June 4, 2014 And its back together, heading back to the car ... I just cleaned up the head studs and got the length out of the case right (centre studs only had half the thread on the stud). The sealant is threebond 1211 - silicone based shit, nightmare to remove (about 3 hours for four cylinders), but apparently bullet proof (ish). Studs on the underside of head are a trick to torque, but got there through cunning. Used a 13/14mm ring spanner and an app - Norbar torque wrench extension - to get the torque right... Sneaky head stud nuts... 3 Quote
sluggy Posted June 5, 2014 Author Posted June 5, 2014 12v semaphores, the 6 volters go off like an uppercut with 12v running through them. 3 Quote
sluggy Posted June 21, 2014 Author Posted June 21, 2014 Progress - everything barring the radiator pretty much mounted, I chucked it all together today to see how it looked and to make a list of bits and pieces needed and make a list of hose fittings and hose required. Remote filter mount IC mount Water Tank and water/meth injection tank Plug for all ecu wiring Coils now mounted on intake post boxes And after that we were talking about the wheelie bars and the exhaust and the lack of ground clearance for all this. Suddenly came to me, engine mounts will have to be remade, needs to be lifted a least an inch to allow everything to work so back to the drawing board ! 1 Quote
sluggy Posted July 4, 2014 Author Posted July 4, 2014 Cha Ching week, got the dry sump system plumbed up, pretty much every inlet/ outlet is on the wrong side, so it's done but may change stuff. Pedals, still to be plumbed. Plumbing water and fuel this weekend. Big thanks to The Hose shop in Manukau for wasting 5 hours with me making hoses. 6 Quote
sluggy Posted August 21, 2014 Author Posted August 21, 2014 Wasn't happy with the end result with the plumbing, so ended up making a bulkhead to make it tidier and easier to pull the engine out. All oil and fuel lines, and the electrical bulkhead plug run through it. The only potential issue could be if I need to put a scatter shield round the bell housing (thought of this 5 minutes ago). Also been looking at the way all the oil lines are running at the pump and filter, and it looks like I have the wrong remote filter mount, the ins and outs need to be on the opposite side to where they are. And nearly have all the brake and clutch lines sorted barring a few fittings and a metre of brake line. I'm picking it'll be an absolute arse to bleed. For the record -4 Teflon line is an absolute c@*t to make up. Still need to work out go pedal cable attachment etc... 6 Quote
sluggy Posted September 18, 2014 Author Posted September 18, 2014 For the record, I did finish the pedals... Except the loud pedal, will work this out when the fan shroud is done and I have some idea of where it will run. Not perfect but good enough 7 Quote
