matt_spitfire
So got the shortened Hilux diff all welded up and back in the car, forgot to take pics when it was out but you get the idea.. IMG_0923 by postlematt, on Flickr this is it sitting 20mm off the chassis in the arse end. IMG_0911 by postlematt, on Flickr Rolled it out of the garage to give it a dust off and give the garage a sweep and a tidy up. IMG_0916 by postlematt, on Flickr IMG_0920 by postlematt, on Flickr IMG_0914 by postlematt, on Flickr Look at all that room for dish...... This is the 6.5's with 25mm spacers on the back. and this is a view from back/underside IMG_0944 by postlematt, on Flickr and how it will look when the rear wheels are widened, when Gavin Bateman finally gets back to me. matt_spitfire
Also made up some 10mm spacers for the front camber tops, just a pic to show how they looked before they went in. IMG_0909 by postlematt, on Flickr IMG_0910 by postlematt, on Flickr Installed.. IMG_0949 by postlematt, on Flickr Also mocked up the rear filler panel garnish to check clearance with the rear bumper, just waiting to here back about a possible trade of a drop tank in exchange for my factory tyre well/floor pan otherwise ill just but a 40l fuel cell then i can sort the filler positioning. IMG_0937 by postlematt, on Flickr IMG_0938 by postlematt, on Flickr So basically just trying to track down some steel rhs to make up some rear strut towers. matt_spitfire
Today was like my birthday and christmas combined.. After months of measuring and working out offsets, my wheels arrived IMG_1051 by postlematt, on Flickr I got the lip machined of the original rim and new outers made up for the front, and totally new inner and outer barrels for the rear. IMG_1055 by postlematt, on Flickr IMG_1057 by postlematt, on Flickr IMG_1059 by postlematt, on Flickr IMG_1056 by postlematt, on Flickr Front are about 15x7.75 and rears are 15x8.5 Cant get onto the cnc mill to drill holes for the centres untill next week atleast so no photos of them on the car untill i can get that done.. I chose not to get them polished as they will be getting painted. Cheers Matt
matt_spitfire
So I couldnt help myself..Found some handy sellotape and mocked up the wheels, sorry about the crap iphone pics and bad light, you tend to get that at 11pm.IMG_1062 by postlematt, on FlickrIMG_1067 by postlematt, on FlickrIMG_1082 by postlematt, on FlickrIMG_1081 by postlematt, on FlickrIMG_1065 by postlematt, on FlickrIMG_1072 by postlematt, on FlickrIMG_1074 by postlematt, on Flickr
matt_spitfire
So ive run into at issue with the new wheel barrels and please note before you read any further Im not trying to bad mouth anyone because other than this im really happy with the product, just one of those things that happen i guess.. Anyway i went to go and get the centre bolt holes drilled into the new lips/barrels only to realise that the outer edge of the centres have been machined down in order to fit inside the new barrels, this wouldnt be such a big deal but now the bolt holes have been left with under 1mm of sidewall. IMG_1084 by postlematt, on Flickr this now means that the nut and bolt hangs out past the edge of the centre. IMG_1090 by postlematt, on Flickr Which means i cant bolt in the centre, note that there should be about 130mm of dish with the centre located and bolted in.. IMG_1085 by postlematt, on Flickr IMG_1091 by postlematt, on Flickr There is always the option of redrilling the centres but having paid in the region of $1500 for these i think its probably a case of getting them remade? (without sounding like a fussy cunt). Whats are peoples opinion/possible ideas on this? (please note existing barrels, centres and nuts & bolts were sent to the workshop). //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/38745-matt-spitfires-ta22-daily-driver-buildresto/page-3 Once again not trying to bad mouth anyone! But If you know of an easy fix then I'm all ears. Cheers Matt
matt_spitfire
Time to dig this thread up from the dead, nothings been happening.. still sorting the wheels etc. Found a bit of motivation today.. cut out the spare tyre well to make way for the drop tank and make it easier to fabricate the new rear towers. Got it cut out.. IMG_1169 by postlematt, on Flickr but wouldnt it wouldnt drop. IMG_1175 by postlematt, on Flickr because of these suckers, this was welded to the front, the panhard rod mount bracing IMG_1172 by postlematt, on Flickr and this little bastard mount at the back behind the rear numberplate valance.. IMG_1180 by postlematt, on Flickr Couldnt get a grinder in there IMG_1181 by postlematt, on Flickr Finally got it out IMG_1183 by postlematt, on Flickr Oh harro hilux diff.. i also found a 4.1 ratio diff head.. finally.. IMG_1196 by postlematt, on Flickr Started working out the clearnces for the rear shocks. between the calipers, diff mounting brackets and chassis rails theres farrrk all room.. Popular Post matt_spitfire
My Birthday present from myself to myself showed up today.. IMG_1237 by postlematt, on Flickr Got a bunch of stuff off ebay, did a bulk buy and the seller was good enough to combine shipping rather than charging me crazy shipping costs. he sent them as a "gift" and although the combined cost including shipping was probably slightly ove the threshold he put the value on the box at $97 and also put a birthday card in the box incase customs got nosy.. but like i said its a birthday present from myself to myself.. IMG_1238 by postlematt, on Flickr The card cracked me up, the guy seems like a genuine GC haha IMG_1239 by postlematt, on Flickr its mainly small mechanical parts, bushes and a few other bits and pieces IMG_1246 by postlematt, on Flickr ill do another big buy an a month or two and get all my rubber seals, weather strips, badges and other stuff that will go on after panel and paint.. he sells a lot of old toyota reproduction parts so if anyone wants to check out his ebay store and make purchase when i do to save on shipping then give me a PM and can sus something out. matt_spitfire
A pretty boring update really.. Got the tops welded onto the new rear strut tubes, still got to chuck them into the lathe and spin them down to the correct height (80mm from the floor + 20mm on the underside of the floor) IMG_1342 by postlematt, on Flickr Earlier in the build thread i posted a GT front grill i bought from japan, listed as a ta22 grill but was actually and ra23/28 grill (too wide) ta22 GT grills a RARE and go for about $400-700 usd. Solution... cut down the gt ra23/28 grill to fit the ta22! Measured up the ta22 ST grill and marked out the difference IMG_1098 by postlematt, on Flickr Then cut the honey comb and cut and shut the grill. IMG_1101 by postlematt, on Flickr IMG_1103 by postlematt, on Flickr Cut and shut GT grill sitting next to the factory ST ta22 grill IMG_1105 by postlematt, on Flickr Luckily the GT grill is steel so tigged back together, Photo for reference. Top: ST ta22 plastic grill. Middle: cut and Shut ra23/28 GT grill. Bottom: Ra23 LT plastic grill IMG_1350 by postlematt, on Flickr Also Bought a 40L drop tank. matt_spitfire
Not much to update.. I got a new windscreen today, 2piece driveshaft is in the shop being shortened up and having the hilux flange welded on , new radiator and inner/outer steering ball joints are on their way from australia. I've just done another bulk buy of parts from ebay, window seals, weather strips etc etc. I coated the inside of the sills in fish oil then folded up some sheet metal to sort out the sill caps it was a bit of a mish to weld, kept blowing through the original sheet metal. have another plate to go on the end of the sill aswell..
