kp60nick
//oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/35915-kp60-nick-1983-kp60-starlet/ I never intended to own a starlet but when I got offered a swap for my rx7 that I wanted to rid of fast, I took up the deal. The funny thing is that I've only driven a kp starlet once and it was to work and back home. I guess it was love at first drive. My idea with this starlet is to show myself what I can do in the way of build and design. Rather than the normality of today were everything is bolt on and it's not about what you can do but how big your wallet is. My story starts with this Which then turned into this full engine rebuilt manual conversion lowered and wheels. This is when I got my first starlet. I swapped the rx7 plus cash my way. it was a 1982 KP62 4AGE with twin side drafts which are now on K2dori DX. I wanted to do an EFI conversion but found it was cheaper to buy a whole EFI motor than try and find all the parts separately. I sold this motor to a friend of mine's sister which went into a DX wagon and is now in my friends DX sedan. I was half way through EFI conversion when the deal of a life time came up. A fully caged full on race car shell (not rolling) came up on trade me $1 reserve which I won for $405. Went down to Vegas and literally picked it up. I don't have a photo when I first got it wish I did. Left it for about 6 months then started working on it when I got this parts car. This car came up on trademe it may not of had all the bits but it came with starlet LSD which I needed and it had all the rolling gear. But picked up a pretty cheap 4K motor 2 gear boxes and heaps of spares. This is when I first got the race car rolling. Transferred running gear from parts car to race car. Race car was set up for 4AGZE and was mounted about 100mm further back so they have cut firewall and have made pedal box system to run duel master cylinders and hydraulic clutch. Body has been fully seam welded, Perspex windows and alloy dash have been made. I wanted to put most modifications e.g firewall back to standard. Have taken all the steel I need from parts car. Finally got it rolling on 4 wheels the same with some T3 adjustable's in the front and cutties in the back and fitted some sweet mirrors. Got some wheels coming from Japan X2 work equip 01 13x7 with +12 offset rear. X2 hayashi's streets 13x7 with +7 offset front.

I've been a bit slack with the updates but basically all I've done is replace the floor under driver and passager seat. Then replaced the crossmember. The crossmember was about days work. kp60nick
This week so far........ Well Monday was a bit of a sad day for me , but great day for the girlfriend. I finally got rid of the parts car that I had been cutting up and sitting outside our house looking like a piece of crap for the past 6 months. Saturday has been like an early Japanese Xmas. Aaron and I road tripped up north to a top secret location to pick up our wheels that we have been waiting for a life time (not really just felt like it) we are both over the moon with joy. I will let the photos do the talking. Also some more good news My work equips that I thought were +12 are actually +4 offset.

Guest kp60nick
This week on Thursday night after work I needed to put the engine in to dummy fit a few things. This is why I love these little cars. I put engine and gearbox in by myself with no engine lifter in an hour and a half. Didn't even tie it to the roof like I usually do. Also does anyone know where I can get the longer ram tubes for 35 mm dellortos?
Guest kp60nick
Havnt done much for a while been busy doing other things but I did some research / Facebook staking. I was talking to a friend and told him that I got a starlet. Any way turns out he knew the guy I got it from and because I didn't have any photos of it before I got it I had a look at his profile to see if he had any photos. And look what I found. Photos of its past life.
kp60nick
I have been a bit lazy with my post so Here's a update. A couple of weeks ago I set out to make a plate out of 3mm steel to fit on the top of the strut towers so that the struts have 3 bolt holes. Here's the finished product. kp60nick
Today I have been busy making a gearbox xmember. You are probably thinking why do I need to make one because I'm only using standard running gear. Well it's because I have 3 starlet xmember and none of them fit. And instead on looking on the web for hours I decided just to make one. Didn't really know what I was doing but I talked to my dad and he said over design it so that's what I did. kp60nick
I have realised that I have now owned this starlet for over a year now and I have finally got the chance to fix something that I've been wanting to do since day one. The person that originally built this car had flared the guards in some funny way that made it look like it was from the 70s. The reason I have only done this now is because I was waiting for the wheels and tyres and ride height to be sorted. Wheels and tyres were sorted last weekend. So this weekend was ride height. I started by taking springs rite out with no bump stops. Way too low. So I found some wood scraps we had lying around cut them up, put them between bump stop mount and spring mount. All that burnt shit in this photo ^ is from this weird bracket the old owner had on it for some reason. Didn't know what it was so gas cut it off still have to grind it all up. Pretty happy with this as my final ride height. Also have been doing a whole bunch of planing in my head of my rear 5 link setup. Will talk about that some more in another post.
kp60nick
It's been a while since my last post I've mostly been doing body work. I didn't really see the point in posting as I knew it was going to be a very slow process. But now I feel as I am coming closer to finishing off the body work it's about time I made a post. I will take you back a few months when I stripped the car back to just a body, I made set of caster wheels to roll it around on while running gear was out. I paint stripped engine bay it came out real nice and hand sanded inside the car in hindsight I wish I had also paint strip the floor because after about two weeks later all the primer started to flake and cracked up. I found out that the paint I was priming over wasn't prepped properly. I've just left it for now it's most probably to much work to strip it off as I'm just going to put carpets over it. More to come got to find some more photos.
kp60nick
So after priming inside a engine bay it was time to start the massive job of bogging the welds. Looking back now I shouldn't have gone overboard with the bogging like I did but ohwell I've done it now. It's only annoying at the moment because it shows up very little spot that hasn't been filled. This is the engine bay while bogging. This is after bogging and a few coats of primer still not right. ( I'm to fussy apparently ) I've also been working on the body. It looked like it was real tidy already but as I started looking I found more and more dents. So full prime for the body let it sit for a week or so. That gave it time to shrink back if it was going to. After that I sanded it down found where it needed more bog and then spot primed it. This is the body after the spot prime, I'm going to leave it for a while before I sand it a give it another prime.
kp60nick
It may come as a surprise but when your sitting in your engine bay bogging and sanding every little corner, it gives you a lot of time to think about things. I was starting to think what I want to do with this car once it's done. As it can't be registered for the road, it was going to be a grip racing track car nothing serious just a bit of fun. But I've been riding shot gun in a few of my mates skid cars and was thinking that would be a bit of fun. But.... The 4k wouldn't cut it as a skid car so I bit the bullet and jumped on the 4age starlet band wagon. I really wanted to find a rwd 4age and t50 combo so that I knew I was getting everything I needed to do the conversion. But nothing was coming up on trademe or yahoo jp. So I changed my plans again and brought a t50 that came with everything todo with the gearbox. Then about two weeks later I got a phone call from a friend of mine, he knew of a engine and gearbox for sale in jp. I then asked what else was for sale? It turns out it was everything that un bolted from a AE86. I had to have it. So I brought it and I'm selling off all the bits I don't need which is paying for part of the engine conversion. It came with everything. I'm going to use engine, gearbox, diff, front struts, radiator and brakes all around. Everything else I'll sell off.
