Guest flyingbrick
Funny- when I search for this thread it says last post was in 2012 Wtf haha. So, I owe four people a lot of thanks. ZEP for selling me some sweet stuff and being patient with collection, MJRSTAR for going out of his way to get this stuff to me, CRAZYTIM for sending me some gem bits (hes so slack hes not even sent me payment deets hahaha) and finally YOWZER for doing me a sweet deal at Jaycar on the blower fans thismorning. I appreciate it heaps guys!! THANKS!! So.. Tim sent me the Center of a gem steering wheel. This was simple- machine it nice and round, drill and tap holes, BOOM boss kit. It's ended up putting wheel in a great spot- gotta sort horn now as the stock grant horn assembly is not included with the wheel- and their chrome cover supplied is not for me. Here is the stuff that's come from zep. I'll have my cousin bare metal the guards and I'm thinking I may get the bonnet done in glass. And here are the two little blowers that will be demisting my windscreen. they push a surprising amount of air and are super compact and quiet. FedEx came on fri but I wasn't hm

flyingbrick
My mind just exploded with disbelief at this mornings discovery. For the past few weeks I have had trouble with the gems gauge cluster lights being very very dim. I decided it must be a dirty switch so decided to remove it for a clean. While trying to remove the knob from the switch the gauge cluster lit up!! Then I realised that in addition to pulling or pushing the knob to control the lights you can also twist it for completely variable gauge brightness. There are cars 30 years younger that still don't have this feature! Unbelievable.
flyingbrick
Old shape guards and bonnet at panel beater right now being straightened and holes filled. Then parts are off to Mike Shaw fiberglass to get moulds pulled and good light parts made Yussssssss
flyingbrick
I left my lights on the other day. It was a tough jump start from a little forklift to get her going again. If deep discharging screws car batteries then this one will be screwed. Why let it happen again when places like jaycar sell headlight reminder alarms? Perhaps I could have bought one assembled... But it was raining outside and I needed a project. Yusssss It's the little things that make old cars so much easier to live with
flyingbrick
Another rainy poo day at home I got the headlight alarm in and working.. Aside from what's mentioned in the other thread it's all good. Hopefully iv not stuffed up and the battery will be flat in the morning haha. Then I decided to make a start on my windscreen demist/heater setup. First I cut a ply former and some sheet metal and made this tray- I hammered the steel around the ply gently, then used hammer and dolly to get the sides closer to 90 and straight, then I soldered the corners and had it looking real nice before stuffing it with a holesaw. All my damn snips are at work and I'm impatient so started again in fiberglass. I covered the ply plug in foil tape then in soft wax. A few layers of glass and resin plus trimming/cut holes when green- then warmed it on the heater for a few hours to properly harden. Always a good feeling when ya part comes off easily. flyingbrick
Whipped this up real fast- it's to recess and tilt two 5" gauges. Lots more to do. The white stuff is rapid filler stuck to mould- very soft so just brushes off. Wrinkles etc are because I throw a plastic bag over the glass while it cures- the plastic lets me push in and hold down any loose fibers etc. I need to get proper rollers. The thick patch in middle is because once the two holes are cut in it there will be a fairly thin bridge of material in that area. Hopefully I can order a ladder bar kit for the rear sometime soon. Using poly bushes front and rear will hopefully give enough flex to keep things ok on the street And yusssssss, managed to track down the fiero bits I need! Local too!!! flyingbrick
Sooooo. Copious amounts of overtime have produced this: Ordered Ae86 carbon dash from mike shaw- collect this Friday. Bought a freshly rebuilt powerglide transmission. It's done less than 200 miles so fresh as . there is a steel hub to replace the factory weak cast item and has a manual valve body with shift kit. I wanted to have more involvement in the production of both those items but atleast this way it actually is done in a timely manner. Also picked up a new wilwood brake pedal box with correct length pedal to suit gems limited space under dash.

flyingbrick
Learning as I go. Made up a horn assembly to mount the grant horn cover. Grants covers clip on so I made up a plastic ring with retaining lip and spring. Spring transfers circuit to cover and depressing the cover made it touch the wheels Center. Root. I knew it was wack but never thought 12v was enough to feel... First time I pushed the horn button I got a zap! Then the cover fell off- it's just got little dimples that are the worst retention method possible. So I started again. This time with a micro switch ( retained in slot by roll pin) and the cover is retained by a button head cap screw on the very bottom. Much much better result!! It's easy when you have access to the right tools. Something I forgot to mention earlier- the 86 dash from mike shaw is EXACTLY the correct width for the gemini. Fluke. flyingbrick
So.. Clicked buynow on an ls1 earlier tonight. Plan is to retain factory ecu and loom as A, there is tons of info on making the loom work in conversions and B, the factory ecu is easily tunable by those who know stuff. Realistically there won't be forced induction in my future so modifications will be initially limited to things like big throttle body, ported intake manifold, headers (hsv ones look nice, compact and cheap) and cam. Maybe later on look at fitting better heads. What should I consider doing to the motor before it goes into the car? I have heard rumours of easy intake manifold modifications yielding results. Also what do I need to fit this motor to my powerglide? Are tq converters and flex plates similar between lsx and sbc platforms? I'll pop off the mains caps and check the bearings and Do a compression test to be 100% sure it's all good to go. And even better news- the guy I got the glide off let me know he found a b&m pro stick shifter he used in one of his old drag cars. Complete with cable AND cover which is a huge bonus- and he wanted 1/3rd new price so i didn't need much convincing. This is all coming together faster than expected which is nice. Plan is to have all parts together by next summer... Or the one after. Still need to buy and have made/fit Ls1 loom&ecu Strip loom Unlock ecu Drive shaft & hoop Diff + shortening Conversion front hubs and disks Light weight front calipers Fuel cell 044 pump Glass Guards+ bonnet Gauges Tunnel work Engine mounts Big radiator Plumbing everywhere Tires Extractors/exhaust Etc etc etc!! Cheers, Nathan
flyingbrick
My cousin just dropped these off. MASSIVE thanks to NitroApe for the bits.
flyingbrick
Spent an hr on the shifter. Degreased all the fluff/stinky grease out and packed new grease into the mechanism. Cleaned the cover- this will be sprayed black or a carbon copy made. T handle cleaned up and repainted. The wife's nailpolish got raided! Metallic red and clear haha. Before: After: Flying away for a few weeks... Lots of time to think about plans!
flyingbrick
After months of too much work I have finally got a chance to sort things out and bring the ls home. It's been in a fire- how hot I'm not too sure. Some of the plugs are slightly melted. Most sensors seem ok though- and the intake is fine but going on trademe. The heads are clean up top and there is no sign of oil or shit going through the intake. Gotta wait for my engine stand to arrive before I can drain any oil and check all the white metals. Interestingly ( for me anyway) this motor was factory manual and has come with a flywheel- that's going on trademe!! Also the two sets of heads are going on TM. The engine has 800 something castings and the spares are 241.... Anyone keen? Are ports usually this big!! At least it's clean inside up top Water pump came off- how big is that thing and What's with the big bowl pulley?
