SHIZZLs MK5 Cortina

back into the oldschool scene finally...

swapped my uterus for this mk5...it needs a few things for a wof,but still, i think it was worth it.

the body is pretty tidy,has had a respray at some stage,only body things im gonna deal to is the bonnet catches the wiper cowl when you open it,and the drivers door needs to be lifted up (for a wof) the pin is ok,doesnt have too much play in it...

other than that ill probably paint it black for now,that is if the paint turns to poop when i try to sand off the black racing stripes that make me wanna throw rocks at it.

ive got the passengers door lock but i took it out cos its missing the retaining clip,dont wanna loose it.

the motor runs pretty sweet, although some ass clown has kinked the heater hose round and its split,havent seen if its pissing coolant out yet....its got a sierra 5 speed in it too.win..

plans for the future:

fit my recaros after a wof

get a gauge unit with a rev counter

better colour paint unless i can delete the black stripes nicely

lower profile and wider front tyres

extractors and free flowing exhaust

rear shocks

rear wheel cylinder on the left drum

brake shoes

driveshaft donut coupling

non spotlight grille

door lock barrel clip

got a couple more wof things done... hate waiting for parts,especially when i cant get to a wrecker when theyr open..

will need to take a few hours off work to go in...

couple more things done for a wof...

was missing the brake pedal rubber..

wasnt gonna buy one,so i bolted on some pedal pads i had lying round, i got these about 7 years ago for free.

almost biffed them 3 times,glad i didnt..hehe

not a big fan of the woodgrain in cortinas,not much choice other than painting it though..

have been trawling the shit out of trademe lately,and have got all the wof spec bits i need.

so pressies should start flooding the doorway after work most days this week..

got new rear shoes coming,new wheel cylinder,a pair of used shocks, the rest of the driveshaft to make the rubber donut coupling,mirrors should be here tomorrow too....

ive taken the spotties out for now just for the wof recheck,then theyl go back in...theyr pretty dull for some reason,maybe just old bulbs,but will check the voltage getting to them over the weekend..

rear shocks

rear wheel cylinder on the left drum

brake shoes

driveshaft donut coupling

non spotlight grille

door lock barrel clip

shocks should sort the issue of tyre rub,cos the air adjuster monroes had no air in them,and have been leaking..

might change them back over after a wof,haha.

if anyone has a barrel clip i will be stoked to pry it from you :D

picturless update...

have put the driveshaft in with the 6 bolt donut...had to make 2 plates so i could mount the hanger bearing 50mm closer to the box..

put in the shocks,stripped the wheel cyclinder and cleaned out the crap from in there,one of the pistons was siezed in there.

swapped the pistons over front to rear,cleaned the shoes up,put it all back together,completely bled the whole brake system,even the fronts had air in them...

now the peddle is mint,rears feel good...

put the door lock barrel back in with a clip i was give,doesnt work though cos im missing the rod that goes from the lock to the catch assembly..

picked up a sport dash from the same guy,stoked cos its even got the grey dash fascia with it.the gauge plastic is cracked so ill swap those over before i put it in anyway,also wanna swap the speedos over, and figure out what i need to do to the wiring so i can run the sport dash..

the steering is still pulling to the right a bit so ill need to give it some more alignment detailing..

oh and ive straightened up the steering wheel,i hate wheels that arent straight...

only bad point so far is the exhaust bangs on everything, left rear inner guard,spare wheel well,just clears the diff...

just want it to pass a wof then ill put a new exhaust on it...

im picking up a set of mikunis this weekend.

theyr 40mm intakes off a gsxr1100...just need to get a couple of floats for them...

may aswell do the float valves while im at it..

from what ive read they have a 1.5 jet in them from stock..

probably need to go to a 1.75 id say...

will take a while before they go on though,need to make a manifold plate so i can build the bugger...

other than that the cortina is alot lower and the recaros are in,such a difference in ride and comfort...

remember the ugly console for the headunit=====YUK...

so I made a mdf panel to screw onto the face of it,and it now holds my oil pressure,water temp and volt gauges..

also remounted the headunit,this time without cable ties and 10 seperate brackets...

looks almost decent now..ive got an oil temp gauge too,but thats not as important at the moment..

yes theyr cheap gauges,but better than what i had before-none.

also i was working on the suby today and got skull fucked by the bonnet,i bumped the car while leaning over the engine,and pow right in the noggin,fuck did that hurt.....off to a&e a few hours later cos the mrs was peaking about the blood..

some super glue and a tetanus shot later...now ive got a large wad of glue in my hair,looks like some cunts jacked a load in my hair....

still have that damn glue in my hair....a reminder not to work on jap crap...

anywho, i took the thermostat housing off yesterday to see if i can find out why it only gets up to 50deg..

no thermostat to be seen.

so i chucked in a new 88deg thermostat,fired in some fresh coolant(i drained the lot)..

fired it up and believe it or not she actually ran a whole lot smoother at cold idle,and the transition to warm idle was smoother too..

havent got it up to temp yet..will take it for a spin later,mainly was hunting for water leaks etc...

SUPER win!!! heater works now...

now the choke seems to work properly,and it actually runs 100 times better and accelerates alot smoother.

so stoked,who would have thought that a $14.00 part could make someone so happy happy joy joy

bloody thing has started to miss every now and then...smells pretty rich.this arvo when i shut it off it ran on a bit...

gggrrrr...carb needs an overhaul.....

MASSIVE thanks to Lawrence- ColdTurkey for bringing these Viagra equivalent wheels down from chch..

after seeing the result of this simple wheel swap im totally hooked on keeping this now...

I love how it looks..my 12year old dream of a mk5 slammed on 13x7 hotwires has finally been made..

now for some black/very dark looking paint...the profile change of the tyres has dramatically improve the handling,the steering is super responsive now,and little to no guard rub at all..stoked..the rear tyres are poked though so ill chuck my 205s on them,but i think ill still need to massage the lip a little...

after stripping the carb a couple of times,and fitting a new power valve diaphram it still ran like shiz..

had a wicked bog down from 1/4 throttle untill you squeeze it into the secondaries...

had adjusted the mixture,and no change..

did the timing yesterday, no change...new plugs, no change...

then i thought id swap the old vac lines for news ones for the hell of it..these ran off a triple nipple thingy on the base of the inlet manifold,the rubber boot was sloppy and had fuel on it,odd...

went out to otatara and it bogged the 1st time i hit 3rd and then from there was back to normal...

so well see what tomorrow brings when i drive it to work...

alt finally shit its pants..

was driving to work this morning and noticed the voltas had dropped down to 10v..

so as soon as i went to change gear she died,doh..luckily it was as i was pulling into shell.

gay thing was it was at 6.15am...so i chose to walk home, 1.25 hr later.

grabbed my optima battery and raced back,chucked it in, took it home...pulled the alt out.

ripped the back off it....brushes were all good.

its had a new rectifier in it and brushes not long ago by the looks, so i replaced the reg.cost me $16...

got the parts and decided to go to work at 10.30am,lol...

got home and my 3.5yr old daughter helped me chuck it all back together...

at idle shes charging good as now...

radiator failed on the weekend, i noticed the radiator was weeping, so i investigated. had started using water(emptying itself on the ground style)

as soon as i touched the tube it blew apart.

old and brittle..

so i fitted a recoed radiator last night...... winning it

someone just chucked a load of coin into my account tonight..so it looks like shes leaving me tomorrow...

cant believe ive sold it...will regret it for ages i know...

ive had my fun in it, and some not so fun...but its just not practical for dailying to work, the roads down here are shit,and the driveway at work is a gravel 4x4 track...

so im gonna replace it with a 4x4......

many sad faces... :(
