Poo
so theres been a little bit of progress and a few wins in the build. heres a pic of the filthy block with years of oil thats been seeping out of the cam or crank seal. and the link trigger mounted. and a clean block. and the big win was getting the radiator flushed. I was going to be cheap and not flush the radiator. I mean, its never over heated on me (i havent owned the car that long) and the temp gauge reads fine. but common sense made me take it to Auto Radiators in Newton. Fuck me it was 74% blocked!!! Poo
its getting close to starting up again theres a few odd jobs to do. We should be driving/road tune on Saturday. after that drive for a bit and then choose a dyno tuner (around auckland). has anyone got any sugestions on who to use? I am leaning towards Speed Source in Warkworth. as i hear he gets good power results. But I also hear that Torque Performance do a good job and maybe dont get high horse power figures, but give a 'safe' tune. (no point in doing all this work and it shits the bed)
Poo
so the startup and road tune didnt happen. we all got busy. we tried to start the car last night but the starter looks to be rooted. which is wierd cos its new. it sounds very laboured. ive got a reduction starter in the shed at home that we are going to put on. Dion at West tech has programed the ECU so it should start when the new starter is on. one of the last jobs is to get a catch can. so I grabbed an old drink bottle that ive never used and I gave it a quick sandblast. after that Dave at TTT welded some lugs, mounts and a drain line. . Poo
and my budget is completly blown. LSD from a Starion. Thanks to Ewan from http://www.hayatonka.com/
Poo
and it now runs! thanks to Dion at Westech Automotive and Tim at TTT auto Engineering. we had a few small teething problems at the start and Dions laptop would decide to disconnect from the Link every once in a while and the laptop would just turn off! Theres a few jobs to do before its back terrorising the streets. But the quick road tune that we gave it put a smile on my face. the turbo spools quickly and the engine is responsive. --fc-qXogq4
Poo
FFFUUUU at lectics found the offending loose wire (not the one in the pic) that was earthing sorted it (it is/was part of the old loom that isnt getting used any more) was going to fix it last night but my soldering iron was at work. all fixed. i might have lunch at home and grab the car. Poo
small update. the car is running well (pre dyno). boost is stable at 12 pound. even though that BOV is plumbed back in, its a bit loud. My boys (5yo and 2yo) love the car. oh, I changed the wipers: FN96h4kU-KQ
Poo
not much of an update. i fixed my mirror mounts with JB Weld. and the fasteners were rooted. the bolts are dyna bolts (with collars removed) from MSL fastners on Rosebank rd, and cost "just giz what ever change you got in ya pocket" all I had was 40cents! mint. seriously I am never going back to Auckland Engineering Supplys again. MSL is where its at. Scooterworldhttp://www.vespa.co.nz heated the shafts and flattened the ends, drilled and welded the pin back in. and i now have central locking and a 5 Star alarm, thanks to R100/Andrew at Redwood Auto Electrical. Sharp pricing and top workmanship. I still have to pull my finger out and get the car on the dyno.
Poo
quick update. its been on the dyno. and got a piece of paper. 140 Killer Wasps under the hood. and 500 Talks clutch and brake masters were probably getting hot, so i cut up the old heatsheild. fitted. the wastegate actuator is mounted to the down pipe (no room for it anywhere else). so that would of been getting hot. So it now looks like a potato ready to go in the campfire Drove to Taupo for 1vaknds 21st. And Richie took a photo of me.
Poo
and santa came early. the camber plates at the top had to be custom made..... D2 were happy to custom make some for me. I took a heap of measurements and photos and emailed them through. Jeah!
Poo
So I got the rear coilovers in the car. The only hickup was that I needed some spring compressors to get the old struts out. (cheers Sheepers) Pic of the car jacked up showing full travel: and a pic of it with just the rear lowered. The way the arse end of the car handles is awesome. So I am pulling finger and getting the fronts sorted now. Take the front struts out. Cut. Cut and sand blasted stub. (the cheap sand blasters at Bunnings are wicked) And it turns out the factory struts were gas filled KYBs Bottom tube needs 4 holes drilled for plug weld. Botom tube, drilled and sandblasted ready to be pressed onto the old stubs. And thanks to the chaps at Scooterworld/Retroscooter for the use of their press. So, just need to be TIG'd up, crack tested and put back in the car.
Poo
Aaannnnd the GC award goes to...................Sheepers, for his fantastic welding skills. (And generally being a top bloke) They are now all welded up and sitting out at SGS about to get crack tested.
Poo
PASSED! we all knew the welds would be second to none.
Poo
After the kids went to bed on friday night, I put the front coilovers in and got it back on the ground. Handling is a million times better. Dampening is on the softer side, spring preload is bugger all. Happy as Larry.
Poo
I grabed another Eterna off Trademe in the weekend. It will be stripped for parts. Its got plenty of good bits, that I will use/hoard. Power steering, A/C, facelift front and rear bumpers, electric windows, the interior is a bit average. The motor is a 1800cc carb and its auto so they can GTFO. The guy I grabbed it off had the two other 15inch mags and chucked them in the boot. One of the mags has a dent in it so will be only worth scrap/trademe $1 reserve. Heres a pic of the rust addled heap. how does a car like this still have a WOF till december???
Poo
Long time between drinks/updates. Ewans/Hayatonkas container has landed! So today I loaded up the car with the family and we headed up to Rotorex to grab the diff I got Ewan to grab for me. Rotorex is on the way to Mangawhai. Amazingly the kids handled the long trip reasonabling well. anyway heres the diff sitting on my freshly WOFd trailer. Next step is get some help to get the thing off the trailer. Its rather heavy and awkard to lift. We used a forklift to load it on the trailer. Then install it in the car. Fill with the appropriate oil. Oh and dust off the Japanese spider nests.... Skids. Poo
So the last couple of nights after the kids are in bed, ive gone to the shed and Ive undone a bunch of nuts and bolts. Sorry crap picture. Old diff on the left, LSD on the right. the brake lines on the Starion LSD are a bit different, so I will have to swap the lines over from the old diff. I'll need to cut off some mounting lugs and weld them to the Starion diff.
Poo
In the weeked I drilled out the spot welds holding the brake line brackets. One holed the line that goes to the body of the car and two are under the 'wings' of the subframe. A mate popped over with my brothers welder. We flipped the diff upside down and plug welded the the two brackets under the wing. Then back over at plug welded the last one. Cheers to Chris Euron8 for offering to help out, but our schedules didnt match. In all honesty there wasnt that much heavy lifting required. I used two trolley jacks and lifted the whole unit up into place. Just need to bolt up the drive shaft, bleed brakes, wait/get some 5stud wheels. Then head down to Fuel's mums place and borrow his 5 stud front hubs/disks/calipers. Do skids.
Poo
So a quick trip down to see Fuel's mum to grab some 5stud starion front hubs. The drive down to Taumaranui didnt take as long as I thought as there was minimal traffic. Phils mum showed me the shed and I yanked the hubs off the struts. Phill even called from Aussie while I was there, just to make sure every thing was ok. somewhere in here is the front struts. here they are Ive never seen wheel studs held in place with circlips....... and they guys at BNT dont stock them.... I'll keep hunting parts suppliers. and heres a pic of Phills starion wheels, just cos they are awesome. and Phil must of been in a real hurry to pack his luggage for Aussie, cos he forgot his BBQ apron.
