samii
my car died today think either it's a problem with the starter motor or the voltage regulator?( it makes a big clicking noise when i try turn it over) the wiring in the car bad when i brought it, but i didn't realise just how bad it was, anyway i've tidied all the wiring up now, and the car has power and i can run the cd player and everything but as soon as i turn it over the regulator clicks again. is there any way the regulator can stop the car from starting, if so how much are they for a new starter motor or regulator? kyteler
What do you mean it's clicking? The VR or the Starter? If when you're trying to start the car, the starter is clicking and it's not actually spinning the engine over then your battery is flat. Likely because of the sound system you've installed and the fact that it's draining more power from the battery than the Alternator can cope with. Keep in mind these cars had optional stereos, the abilities of their alternators are slim at best. The other thing to note is that their electrics are predominantly Lucas. So, be afraid. Be very afraid. The VR shouldn't stop your car from starting, all that it will do at worst is not allow the headlamps/electrics the power they require. It's not included in the starter circuit afaik. samii
aw the sound system isn't big or anything. it's just a headunit and little bog standard of 6 inches. but yeah i might take the starter off tomorrow morning and give it a god check see what it does. and when i said the VR making a clicking noise i was meaning like it makes a clicking noise and if you put your finger on it you can feel something inside hitting the top of it? bubblegoose
give the starter a tap/smash with a hammer might just be stuck, then try some jump leads from a good battery to the starter motor if not.. strip it and give the brushes a good clean
Borgweiser
By regulator I think you mean starter solenoid, if it's clicking the starter is the problen, which is common, pull it out and give it a clean up and check your brushes, if they're under 15mm replace them. Or hit with hammer, that seems to work with escorts
