Howdy yall

G/F's MK1 Cortina floor change gearbox is getting tired in that getting into 1st and fourth is a mishion sometimes no crunching just the bitch wont go in without some forceful and right rev action

Question is what oil would be best to put in her to sooth it out???

and what is the problem with it??...

gearbox never pops out of gear, doesnt whine, and doesnt crunch

seems to also have bad and good days :x

any help would be uber appreciated

Hy tran oil is the go mate. Go in to your local Case International tracktor dealers and buy a 20 litre of Hy tran oil it is Hydraulic oil but is also rated for gearboxs. I have used it in or my manual gearboxs on the road. My ministock, My streetstock and even fully worked Datsun 1200 with a A15 uses it and that does 160mph in 3rd

just had a thort looking at the old box pictured

could it be something so dum and simple as that ive put the metal cover that bolts onto

the 4 bolt holes showen upside down?

I can't remember if there is a wrong way for that swivel plate.

As the four bolts can be accessed from inside the car I usually fit that swivel plate to the gearbox with the gear lever attached.

That way you can move it around a bit on the bolt holes till it feels right before tightening it all up.

For the record you have a floor change three rail magic wand gearbox (non remote shifter) which is standard Mk1 Cortina and pretty average even when in good nick.

Good luck mate - I don't think I can offer much more advice

EDIT:

The box in the car has the wrong selector rails in it.

I didn't notice it before but I think they are for a remote shifter.

I need to do some looking at my spare parts in the weekend to work out what is what but you have the bits you need to fix it in your old box and it is easy (but the box needs to come out).

If I am right and your car has a handbrake under the dash and bucket seats you could probably just fit a remote shifter to it

arrrggghhh gutted

yep handbrake under dash but has the nice bench seat back in it

gutted so that would be why it feals mental to change gear????

dont mind if box has to come out its a rainy weekend anyway

Cheers Jake

hope you find the parts your looking for to help

You can sort this in half a day. Just take the selector rails out of the old box (you probably only need to take one TBH but the three out of the box in the car are worth a few $$) and put them in the new one.

Dont drop the three ball bearings into the new box when you take the lid off.

sweet will be doing it tomorow then

sorry for my ignorance but whats a TBH?

and also to get them out to i jsut take the cover off infront of them

and pull them out that way?

or is there a nice trick to getting them out and reconnecting them..

Also how much dollars are the other 3 selectors worth?

TBH = to be honest

I am pretty sure the three selector rails in the car are for a remote shifter. If they are them probably ask $50-$70 for them as a set.

The rails come out toward the rear of the box. Don't be scared of the tie wire on the lock bolts (under the big cover) but do be scared of dropping bits into the box.

Practice on the one you have on the floor now but don't forget which rail goes where.

I have not done this job for several years so I could be forgetting something
