kokomo
Anyone got a spare one in decent order that i can thief for a price?
Yowzer
I'll check the models I have, but I have a pile of them. Literally a pile. I'd say they need new brushes though. Edit: Yep, got 6 or 7 of them, will check which are good and which aren't
kokomo
That'd be sweet. Cheers.
CaMpylobacter
I got one from an escort to put on my citroen. same as mini/morris. is only 6months old with little use. has a couple of secondhand parts in it though as an internal conductor plate split when the guy hit a wall lol. works fine and I shouldn't need it now that I have a citroen parts car with an alternator. they're like $200 but you can have for like $
kokomo
Cheers! $50 sounds perfect right now..
Unclejake
Kym, I overheard only part of one half of a phone conversation with Lankilla the other night so forgive me if I am being rude/behind the eight ball but what is the issue with the car? I got told the idiot light stays on. Is the vehicle/dash wired for an alternator or a generator? Do you have reason to believe that it is not charging or is it the light that concerns you? kokomo
Kym, I overheard only part of one half of a phone conversation with Lankilla the other night so forgive me if I am being rude/behind the eight ball but what is the issue with the car?I got told the idiot light stays on. Is the vehicle/dash wired for an alternator or a generator? Do you have reason to believe that it is not charging or is it the light that concerns you? Yup red charge light is on permanently even with the keys out and i have to jump start it every time. Put a new battery in it a while back coz i thought that was the problem but it didnt fix it and now the battery is holding very little charge even if its been on the charger overnight. Enough for the wipers to go but nothing else really.. Went and got the alternator load tested yesterday and its stuffed. Need to do the same with the battery. Probably a case of chicken and egg syndrome i think. I have no idea if this shell is wired for an alternator or generator. The engine was out when i got it. Is there a way i can tell? Hadnt even considered that as a possibility but its a bloody good point..
Unclejake
If it is wired for a generator there will be a regulator box somewhere and this will/could be part of the issue. A regulator looks a bit like this And will probably be found on the firewall or inner guard. They are about the size of a packet of cigarettes I guess. The voltage regulator is not used (or possbly only partially used - I can't remember) with an alternator conversion as the alternator requires a rectifier which is normally built into the alternator
kokomo
Ok. Ill go have a scrim-mim-age and see if i can find it...
kokomo
Nah, definitely no regulator lurking there anywhere.
LAN_KILLA
deffinatly wired for an alternator. All the wiring seems to be correct, and doesnt appear to have been mucked with. Whats happening is that the charge light will show when the key is off, but as soon as its turned on the light will go out. If the alternator is disconnected the light will go out and remain out. Unclejake
Are you certain the alternator is wired to the charge light? The oil pressure light is switched to earth. If the alternator idiot light wire was hooked up to the oil pressure light I THINK it would do what you have described. EDIT: Nah - the oil pressure light should go off when the key is out regardless of if it was hooked to the alternator or not. Old Mercedes share the same light for the handbrake and charging system. LAN_KILLA
wire colours are correct at both ends. I think... not overly sure though.... the Oil Light is negative and positive switched, where as the charge light is just positive switched But imagine it would cause problems if they had been setup wrong... Oil light appears to work correctly though
Unclejake
Hmmm. I got to go but I will leave you with some random thoughts Basically an alternator has three wires. 1 big wire to the "battery" to provide the positive current to charge the battery 1 small wire that is an exciter wire. This wire tells the alternator that the ignition is on and comands the alternator to provide current when spinning. 1 small wire to the idiot light. The idiot light goes OUT when the alternator is providing a positive current so have a think about how it is switched as my brian is mush and I have to piss off. Good luck team
LAN_KILLA
cheers... now it makes sence as to why 2 wires end up at the same place(or maybe not). Setup is as follows: (note.. this is the same as my mini and KK-K's ADO16) -Small Brown Wire with Yellow Stripe goes to idiot bulb -Thick Brown Wire goes to post on Solenoid (Same post that the battery is connected to, and all other things that get a feed straight from the battery (Fuse Box, Ignition Switch)) -Small Brown Wire with Blue Stripe goes to the same post on solenoid as all the other wires. (im assuming this is the excitor wire) Seems weird that the excitor wire goes there... would of thought it would goto the ignition switch at the 'ON' position. From memory both the excitor and main wire are in the same crimp at the solenoid end and it looks to be a factory crimp. Cheers
Unclejake
Excellent description my friend. I reckon it is possible that the altrnator in question is toast and a new one might fix the idiot light problem. Try a new alternator and if the problem persists take a look 'upstream' of the idiot light. Demand a plate of Moroccan Lamb as payment - Ookymoo signature stz . CaMpylobacter
all you need to wire on those lucas alternators is an idiot light - alternator earths it, and one to power. alternator earth is through it's body. mean you can test alternators such as this on the floor. you chuck a socket in the drill, and hook one of the big terminals to power run the alternator up to drill speed hook power to the small terminal watch alternator near on lock up then go flying across the shed floor tis lolz/do it in a huge vice. Yowzer
Whether the idiot light is working correctly is irrelevant as Kimoko says she still has to jump the car every time coz the alternator ain't charging. [/drunk] Check the brushes though, chances are they are worn to stumps.
LAN_KILLA
Im thinking more the control unit/rectifier is had it as its draining the battery as well
