Remade the doorcards cause the other ones sucked, used thinner padding and a suede-look vinyl, heaps better, made a gearstick boot out of the same stuff.

Spent a day putting my dash back in, gave it a satin black with vht vinyl and carpet spray stuff, great stuff to use. Looks the same as original in the pics but up close shes heaps tidier.

In the weekend I pulled the dizzy off and threw it back in, turned out someone had put it in wrong, instantly fixed my timing problem and ran how it should, although my dizzy is twisted as far round as the mount will allow and its not quite as advanced as it should be. Alternator is fucked and was draining my battery but I couldnt help taking it for a drive, goes real fast, till my battery gave out and I broke down

Been driving it a bit, still loud and a rough but fun all the same. Someone that owned it before me managed to put a small crack in the block in the hole where the oil pressure sender should be, and there is a bolt in it now. The bolt caused the crack as an oil pressure sender uses a tapered thread but the bolt in its place was a straight bolt. I was just going to leave it be but after a big drive its leaking a bit of oil :x I will have to sus that out somehow, big pain in the ass :(

Got a new bluetop block thanks to l1ttle_d3vil. Cracked the sump and bearings off to see how they looked, not the best, number 2 big end is worn down to the copper, rest are average as. Will have to see when I get the current engine apart which is best as i can use either. Not too keen on spending huge amounts getting things ground to size etc but would rather use the internals that belong to the block if I can help it.

Anyway pics...

I'm so organised

img4909zo0.th.jpg

No.1 & No.2 big ends, apparently its usually No.2 that goes on 4age's

Time for old engine to come out! Couldnt use my hoist so did it the hard way and pulled it apart as I went.

Recorded all the valve clearances before I took the cams out, they are hilariously far out. No wonder it sounded like a sewing machine

Intakes should be .006" - .010"

Mine are between .021" - .023"

Exhausts should be .008" - .012"

Mine are .016", .017" and the rest are between .022" - .023"

Old starship is off the road again

Old block looks almost better than the one I intended to replace it with, though I havent seen the crank yet, but im sure it will be fine. Undecided what to do at this stage. I want to use the sweet block. Old man reckons im making work for myself doing all the swapping and I should just take the cracked block somewhere to get the braized up. No idea, got it this far anyway.

Big long weekend, started with a bare block, and have rebuilt and got engine in with minimal hassles. Did it entirely on my own so I know who to blame if (when) it breaks. I decided to use the spare block, crank, rods and pistons I got off l1ttle_d3vil. Had the block acid bathed and honed, and had the crank measured and polished. Got new rings, big end bearings, main bearings, thrust washers, gaskets, head bolts etc.

All my pistons in

img4987uc2.th.jpg

Built up the rest of the short block on the floor, forgot to take pics. Took gearbox out with intention of swapping a spare in, although when I had it out and had them side by side i realised I couldnt easily swap them, the spare had a remote shifter and would require a new hole for shifter or I would have to take them apart and swap shifter linkages, wasnt keen for either so back in went the old box with fresh oil.

Used the number 8 wire technique to lift into the hole

Finished off all the other bits and pieces, filled with water, started leaking like mad, gave up on the water and went to start it.

Started first pop 8)

Replaced a waterpump gasket, had to take off cam gears an cambelt and covers and was a way gayer job than I anticipated. Better not leak!

Fixed my clutch cable. Took it for a drive round the block, think the engines fine, may still have fuel issue, so Ive just finished swapping the old pump for a VL one I got off eliot, chur bol.

Gunna throw the bonnet on and go for another test drive shortly I think.

Gearbox is still queer as, had a slight hope that fresh oil may aid the downchangining issue but haha nah that didnt happen.

Yea!

Havent had anything to update in ages, til today!

Looks so sweet, so stoked :D

Put some 185/60R14 Dirreza's on the G5's looks decent enough but not as good as I'd hoped, hard to get a nice tyre for a 6inch rim. Also flushed my brake lines with some new brake fluid, Castrol Dot4 stuff, needs new pads next. Still want to sus out bigger shims.

Far I have neglected this thread.

Nothing has happened with this in awhile, got front shocks shortened thanks wayne and new rear shocks to keep all my springs captive, Looks choice at its new height. Sam helped me rewire the whole works and a new ecu from markku sorted all my running issues, reliable as now. Took it to trackday in April and had a blast.

I'm keen to improve this thing for the next trackday so ive bought a new gearbox and will install it in the next few months, then I'd like to do a front brake upgrade and start thinking about cheap diff options, likely just a second locked diff for the track.

At the track

And a pic to show how dirty and unloved it looks on borrowed wheels haha

Anyho, comments in the discussion thread

Shit I have had this car for a long time. Figured I would tidy up the wheels a bit, have one polished to a my low standards but im bleeding and my fingers keep jamming up so will do the rest another day.

So I remember how to do the others, I used 120, wet 280, wet 400, wet 600 then polished with liquid reflection. Cause thats what I had lying around.

Ever since I have had this car it has had a stuffed gearbox, the bearings are noisy and the syncros are non existant, those who have seen me at track day will have heard me revving it and double clutching as I struggle to find gears while steering into the hairpin. Purchased a gearbox ages ago to try and fix this but when I tried to put it in I discovered the old gearbox was some mongrel of a thing with different splines and/or shifter position than factory toyota items so it didn't fit, I was angry and put it back together how it was and gave up until the now. Clutch was slipping terribly and it was hard to get into gear even at idle, so I had some spare time and money and have finally decided to get on top of it.

Bits old and new

img0975o.jpg

converted 22 spline box I was using

img0976v.jpg

20 spline box which i've just put in

img0977x.jpg

spacer ring for smaller input shaft bearing when using 20 spine box with A-series housing

aligning clutch using a spare input shaft

img0984q.jpg

have always been able to see my flywheel so I roughly hacked up some alloy to cover it

img0987l.jpg

The driveshaft shop was closed this week, so hopefully they open on Monday, cause that is all that is left to do!
