That's for sure the issue with any true shit box, neglect of maintenance is probably more widespread than an enthuiasts car of the equivalent age / mileage.
This. I test drove 2 turbo airtreks. One was also a smokey boy but was complete neglect (only reason I was keen was cause full ralliart spec with the kit and all the sweet gubbins) brown muddy rad, service well overdue etc. Strangely enough it was a smokey piece of shit.
The other one I drove was actually well maintained with all the service history blah blah. And it drove mint and blew no smoke. Crazy what happens when you maintain a car...

Also bought a pair of vr4s with @Slacker_Sam. last night because reasons. Even in auto form they really are no slouch. And the active yaw control is pretty fucking impressive. Can throw them around far easier than you should be able to for a big barge of a car.

Is this only for small cars?
The airtrek turbo I have has been pretty decent, it's close to 230,000km and has had little bits and pieces like a split in the radiator top tank and leaky shocks at the last of..
Sure it's a bit hungry on gas, but it's ability to go from 0-50 kph in not very long due to the small turbo is bloody handy for taking gaps in traffic you wouldn't normally consider..
We first purchased it in 2008, had for ~100,000 then foolishly traded it on some hyundai diesel thing.
Popped up on trademe for 4 grand in 2017 so brought it back. Has provided cheap motoring since then. Not bad in the mud either with the basic awd system..
Almost bought one of them. I think ultimately the reason we didn't is how shallow the boot is on them. Ticked all the boxes in every other respect. They definitely GHFWTA.

We squeezed 7 or 8 of us in one of those on the way to beerfest in chch a couple years back. Can't say I'd recommend it...

I'd say a 106 rallye would fetch near 205gti prices if not more haha.
Last I checked the 306 gti6 and s16 were still pretty cheap. I'd say they'd be about ready for a price hike tho. Have seen several 306 xsi's for minimal money. But probs not overly exciting to drive.

Yep. Absolutely agree. Would love a 106/citroen saxo.

Don't really know what I have to bring to this. But most likely will be the high ks, rattly, smokey, leaky alfa v6.

Sold my middys grandparents one of those camrys in that shape with the 3.0v6. Had it at ours and punted it around for a week. Was about as quick as any other v6 sedans but my God it was a dreary, beige POS. There's a good reason camrys are regarded as the most boring car known to man.
