  1. Has anyone got a spare NBC110 motor? (in any condition) I'd quite like to build a big block while still keeping my stock motor in the bike as it's still useful. It's increasingly noisy when hot has possibly lead to some ponies escaping. Last night's ride home from Nats was 72km/h top speed unless tucked with no obvious wind...

Yeah fuel economy on the 2.4's is the downside. Like many have said, not an issue if not using to commute.

I really sympathise with trying to find the right car for normal, everyday working people. My wife and I went round in circles for ages. We found the second hand market from about 10yrs ago is stuffed seemingly as it's when people stopped buying commodore/falcons and started buying silly unpractical utes as their primary family car.

    Rhyscar's unsolicited car buying advice;

If you want a reasonably priced car to do family, modern, comfyish, reliable, decent fuel economy, tow a decent sized trailer/boat - Buy a diesel Hilux etc for >50k

If you want a reasonably priced car to do family, modern, comfyish, reliable, decent fuel economy, tow a decent sized trailer/boat - Buy a petrol v6 highlander/Pathfinder for <20k

If you want a reasonably priced car to do family, modern, comfyish but boring, reliable, decent fuel economy, tow a decent small sized trailer/boat - Buy a Rav4 (2L non-4wd better on gas, better engine) or a newer Xtrail/CRV for <20k

If you want a reasonably priced car to do family, modern, comfyish, reliable, decent moderate fuel economy, tow a decent small sized trailer/boat - Buy a honda accord wagon (touring ones are real nice) <15k

If you want a reasonably priced sedan to do family, modern, comfyish lush as hell, reliable, decent fuel economy, tow a decent sized trailer/boat - Buy a v6 lexus. KM's don't matter if buying NZ new for <10-15k

If you want a reasonably priced car to do family, modern, comfyish, reliable-ish, decent fuel economy, tow a decent sized trailer/boat - Buy a BA falcon wagon 200kms or so for <5k

Someone should put that into a graph?

We found the sweet spot with buying cars is find one 8-10yrs old with an ignorant owner (either old or young, never a family), who has hardly used it properly but wants a newer model (whether they can afford it or not). Buying cars is more about who you are buying them off and whether they've thrashed/serviced/paid oil changers or a proper mechanic almost as much as the type of car you're buying.

    This is my never-buy modern cars if done more than 80,000kms list;

Any Mitsi, Volvo, VW, Audi, BMW (although I've heard some are reliable, I've had shit experiences), subaru legacy (they aren't as capable as you'd like them to be), Mazda CX5, I'm on the fence with Hyundai Santa Fe's...

Perhaps an unpopular opinion but let's face it, the EV equation just doesn't add up currently. No point taking 15-20yrs to recoup the initial outlay in petrol savings to then have a vehicle thats obselete- may as well keep paying for petrol as net financial gain is zero. Petrol is going to be around for a while still; dictated by the rate of change the world is capable of (or not of!). Perhaps this will change if/when good quality second hand EV's that aren't shit to drive can be had for under 20k?

We ended up with a 2013 Rav4 with 60kms on the clock and a 2012 Lexus with 240kms on. Both NZ new, 1-2owners. Has been trouble free motoring so far, will report back in a few years.

I like 99% of what you've said except for the EV part. If you have a daily commute of 70km a 30kWh Leaf will smash that for years for ~$12k, less if you buy a toughie. A Tesla or new anything doesn't ever stack up.

Nice - I like the concept although the one you linked to has a pretty fucked up interior - seats split etc. But others seem pretty reasonable and I like it's a Toyota.

I'm suspicious the clean car thing is stopping the 2GR powered Mark X Zio being brought in. They look like a used block of soap, but GHFWTA. They're also a 6 speed auto. The 2.4L version are all CVT.

    Kawasaki what are you thinking

    Zzr250

    40hp

    160kg wet

    Ninja 300

    39 hp

    174kg wet

Why is your sport bike less powerful and more heavier than its grandfather tourer

Torques? The ZZR is a 4 cylinder vs 300 Ninja actually being an econo-twin in spots drag?

  5. Sounds like the 2GR in the family wagon is better than money in the bank!

I might be an idiot, but would it be possible to chuck the decision making process as to why the 4GR was the best choice into the first post? I wanted to use it to show students about using research/data to inform decision making within a project. It's far more interesting than the typical data analysis, but yet still simple enough for them to get it.

    Fixed it.

As of the middle of last year, the gummint had paid out 100million in ev subsidies while collecting 14 million from “ute” tax. Nobody has said out loud where the rest of the money comes from but rest assured dear taxpayer, it’s coming from you! The only people I know who have taken advantage of the scheme are people with enough money not to need the grant….at the expense of the minimum wage cleaner who needs to replace their Alphard. Grrrrrr!

Ok I'll bite. Minimum wage cleaners aren't buying new imports. The point is to lower the emissions of the entire fleet by manipulating behaviour. Eventually these Tesla's etc become available on the second hand market.

The gap between the fee and rebate would probably have something to do with how much earlier the rebate became available than the fee was applied?

Thread detail like a Te Puke train, but what was the rego plate on your RMX50? Dads just brought one, wondering if it’s the same bike.

There wasn't many of them imported, I think they were $5500 when an RG150 was $2995.

I forgot to update, I did change to the black and I like it very much.

Now that I had nice tyres for the road the front suspension issues became more noticeable. Anything above 70kph would make the front bounce. The springs were too soft from factory and the oil was shit because I was a lazy fuck and reused the questionable stuff that was in there, it wasn't the right amount either. Stock spring rate is 0.36kgmm or something, so on advice from Racetech I bought some of their 0.42 springs. After putting them in with some fresh oil I took it for a zing up the motorway and it feels really good now. No vibration or diving to the centre of the earth when on the brakes, still soaks up the bumps nicely so that's a win.

Next on the agenda is fuel consumption, it's a bit too thirsty for a little 200 and the tank is only 11 litres including reserve. I have leaned it out a touch down low and my range has gone up but I'm waiting on a full rebuild kit for the carb which I hope will get me even further. I'm at 80k's on my current tank, not far from hitting reserve though.

I found a suitable accessory for the Nats trip should I need it.

My RMX50 would do 10L/100km at 90km/h. Was a shame it only had a 7L tank.

Think I heard somewhere that the supermarkets bought forward the date that they wouldn't be accepting colony eggs so it caught the farmers unaware.

Supermarkets don't care what the egg prices are either. If there's less and the price goes up, so does the margin.

Supermarkets do appear to be taking the piss with this 'cost of living crisis' though. Carrots are $5/kg here at the moment at the supermarket, same quality at the grocers $3/kg.

Lush hadn’t seen that spec, will keep an eye out. kept coming across the Zio mark x and thinking that shape is too family wagon spec

Basically all the 2GR versions are fully loaded, the only thing that they're missing is cruise control. It was an option though. The rear row of seats is a 5 minute job to remove for all of the capacity, 4 proper bucket seats all on their own rails makes for a great road trip vehicle with 4 proper sized people.

    Holy thread dredge Batman.
I am in the market for a new daily. Will be using it for work duties so will be doing decent miles. Criteria:

wagon. Need space for camping trips, snow missions, general hauling duties
towbar (not a deal breaker but would be ideal).
    Reasonable kms (sub 150k?)
    Reasonable economy
    Not gutless
    Reliable
    budget of 7-8k

So far option that seems to tick most boxes is a Honda accord wagon, probably not as lush as jesses above but earlier model. K24 is appealing for the economy/performance trade off but should I be considering any other options in that category? Is budget unreasonable? a few Toyota avensis and caldina that fit the above bill would appreciate any feedback anyone has on those, or others to look for

    I saw this listing you may be interested in: 2007 Toyota Mark-X ##ON SALE-CHEAPEST 3.5 IN NZ## https://www.trademe.co.nz/3879980161

Although this particular one doesn't quite meet budget, they come up all the time. Economy isn't terrible (ours has averaged 9L/100km over the past 6 months), I've done 7L/100km from Hanmer to Nelson as it pulls all of 1800rpm at 100km/h. 276hp 2GR ghfwii.
