  1. does anybody know the quantity of oil that should be in the 4 speed gearbox on my mk1 escort. just changing the clutch and some of the oil escaped so i'm gunna change it out, don't know how much has come out though so i don't know how much to put back in
  2. car is looking tops! can't wait to see the pics
  3. so are you dudes doin the cruise friday or just the bbq thursday?
  4. Just a few pictures to put up Thats the completed chassis rail and swaybar mount there is the finished grille opening I then moved on and tackled one of the larger spots of chassis rail rust: It came out looking sweet, im getting pretty good at this stuff, every patch i do seems to be better than the last, especially looking at my first patches! next i tackled my first bit of sill rust and since then i have turned the car up on its other side today and have finished most of the welding on all those repairs. one more major part to fit and then just alot of scraping and buffing to get it back to steel and the underside will be ready for prep and paint, with the exception of the enlarged trans tunnel which im yet to do. Im moving back to christchurch in a week which means progress will halt for a long while again. i was hoping to get the underside finished by then so that i could tow it back but doesnt look like it will happen now after finding all that rust...
  5. Minilites are by far the best wheel that you can put on ANY oldschool car, i would love a set for my abox, or my esky for that matter. Haha be careful if you do the track day!!! i took my mk1 esky to one in chch, told myself "car has been nanna'd all its life, better take it easy" but once you are on the track and chasing someone down, its hard to lift off lol
  6. alrighty time for a bit of an upate i have unstitched the lower grille opening to get at the radiator support rail behind it. I found that the grille opening was a bit rusty too so i made up a new one, this also got rid of the crank handle bump that they have. this is the lower support rail that was rusty as you can see i also put back together the inner wing and its parts: i put the rest of that chassis rail back toghether now too but i don't have pictures of that yet, i also have put the new radiator support in and the new grille opening and it has all fit together quite well.
  7. this is wicked man, i'm planning to do this with the back half of my parts anglia
  8. started today by pulling off the sway bar mount since i wanted to rebuild the chassie rail underneath it. once i got it off i found a horrible looking previous repair that had gone all rusty and just looks like crap: so i went ahead and cut the bugger off: which then revealed another crappy repair: the steel that has been used for this repair has gone all rusty and it is not a flash job anyhow... so i cut the bugger off: and made up a patch: tomorrow when i manage to pick up the spot weld drill off a mate i will unpick the lower grille opening coz it needs some serious repairs... and so that i can get at this: its scary cutting chunks that big off the car!! i'm going to need to pick up more panel steel tomorrow i think...
  9. argh!!! found even more rust and bad repairs this afternoon. i took one of the swaybar mounts off coz i want to rebuild what was behind it while i was doing the chassie rail repairs, and found some of the worst bad repairs i have found on the car yet. i'll post up some photos tonight. so now i've gotta cut out even more of that area. i'm borrowing the spot weld remover tomorrow and then will start making big progress cutting bits out.
  10. cheers, i'm a bit gutted at having found all this rust underneath, i was hoping to have it stripped by now and be prepping it for paint... i'm just plodding on at it though, i used to go down to the shed and stand there for an hour staring at it trying to work up the balls to cut the next bit off as they all seemed to be in more difficult places. found that was wasting too much time though, so now i just rip in and cut shit out haha "IF IN DOUBT, CUT THAT SHIT OUT!"
  11. spent a bit of time in the shed this afternoon and got a wee bit done. got sick of the mess in the shed with all the underseal that i chipped off so i had a clean up: before: after: got as much welding as i could done on the right hand chassie rail and bumper mount, will finish it off when i flip the car on its other side. started welding in the corner plate on the left side of the car as well, same deal though, got as much done as i could before the car gets flipped. found a bunch of rust in one of the chassie rails nearer the front repaired a little bit of the chassie rail: im fricken stoked with how that repair came out, the flash on the camera shows it up a bit but you can hardly see that i have been there. I read a bit of a tutorial on the net today about welding and it helped heaps!
  12. That car is looking fantastic! Can't wait to see it finished. Good dads make these kind of projects much easier aye, i remember holding the doors up on my capri while dad lay contorted upside down over the drivers seat, bleeding knuckles, swearing heaps, trying to line up the doors absolutely perfect
  13. started to buff back the rust on the right hand chassie rail between the steering box and gearbox crossmember and it is looking a bit like swiss cheese. might have to start cutting bits off my parts car soon was hoping to keep it pretty much complete but doesn't look like that will be the way now. am thinking that the rear half of the donor car wil become a trailer with a bbq in it in the future. should be mint
  14. ozzy is a great help when he decides to hang out in the shed! cleaning your whole face and ears while you are lying under the car. always wanting a play fight when you sit on the floor at his level haha he is real funny, he will always climb under the car with you even just to watch what you are doing. i'm sure that dog could do an oil change now if he had thumbs
  15. the tina looks like its coming along nicely, keep at it and you will get there. i have all this stuff left to go on my car really not looking forward to sanding and painting...
  16. 250 is just what they cost from ebay with freight to nz, nothing special. the throttle bodies i got in were freight free as a mate of dads carried them to the drilling rig from the states and then dad carried them home, but i cant do that now coz i wouldnt get them till about march. i sold the throttle bodies on trademe for $150 which is what they owed me, somebody scored a bargain with those
  17. Dobsons in waitara can do certs but they have to get somebody down from aucks i think to do it, my mate has had his silvia on there waiting list for 7 weeks and they haven't got the guy down, he is getting pissed off. Hildred will be certing my car though as he is a family friend and he does alot of our work, dad has been pretty much paying the wages - and some - of his fitter welder for the past month working on our race car. as far as the front frame goes, it is spot welds along the length of it and probably just fillet welded at the ends.
  18. i'm in hillsborough which is between bell block and egmont village. i went to inglewood high haha might have to look into the anglia shell out there, always interested in another shell at the right price for other projects. obtaining the repair sections isn't really the problem, i have no issues with folding them up myself. The problem i have is that i can't get at the front or ends of the section to weld them properly with that front panel in place, it really needs to be unstiched from the gaurds and taken off but that is well beyond my skill level. i might get dads panel beater around for a visit and see if he can point me in the right direction
  19. managed to get a fair bit of the underseal off the inner guards on the left hand side of the car and a few areas on the underside of the floor. found yet more rust and even more rust, thats the area that i have no idea how i am going to fix made a hell of a mess of the shed floor
  20. starting to get a bit dis-heartened with this project at the moment... started stripping back all the underseal and found more rust. a whole bunch of little 2 or 3 mm holes in the chassie rail on the drivers side from the steering box back to the gearbox mount. i also found a hole lot of rust in a box section that goes across the front of the car behind the front lower panel. Ideally i would unpick the front panel to get proper access to repair it but that is along way beyond my skills so im not really sure what im going to do there. I got some dry ice for getting the underseal off but i don't think its really helping all that much. some of it seems to still be really hard to get off and some of it comes off easy. there are places where the underseal has been covered in oil for a long time and it has kept it really soft and damp, this is where the rusty spots seem to be as well. lots of work to go anyway, i'll be back in the shed later tonight so i'll take some photos
  21. i can get a set landed from the states at about $250
  22. coming over from the states? might have to PM him. Not so keen on your ITB & link idea can't imagine it being the cheaper option for me!
  23. that ECU looks mint but i already have a megajolt and just managed to flick off my throttle bodies on trademe so now i can jump back on ebay and order the actual carbs for it. bugger now is that i will have to pay freight again...
  24. gonna be hammer and chisel to get it done anyway, im hoping to get it finished to take back to chch at the end of feb. where do you use the seam sealer? is it just stuff that you paint on over the seals after you weld bits like those on? i got screwed over on my carbs too, i bought some R1 carbs from ebay but when they arrived they have got injectors in the side of them and arent carbs at all! so now i have a set of 02 R1 throttle bodies for sale and am desperately hunting for a set of 01 or earlier carbs from an R1
