  1. Yeah that whole thing is stupid. The only thing he has eliminated is a few adaptor plates and a few brackets.

If driving accessories is an issue then simply drive them off the other end of the electric motor.

I guess because for you it's a work vehicle that's probably quite different to a typical owners experience? In theory the new govt are chucking a bunch of chargers in too instead of subsidising the clean car rebate.

I hadn't thought about that company car issue, probably something that people would want to negotiate with their employers if possible? A huge part of the EV benefit is refuelling at home.

Usually I charge at work so have 100% before i leave each day. I only need to use a public station occasionally on weekends or when going greater distances, like anyone else.

The chargenet chargers on the bombays always seem to have issues and the charget chargers by ebbits in hamilton (kinda behind the base there) get a hammering from people who tell me they are there because the other chargers are broken and there are SFA other options in hamilton.

I'm not complaining as loudly as it sounds like I am, its all good, its just something that people should be aware of.

  3. Chargers continue to be shit.

Seems every second charger i go to is broken in some way.

    Half the plugs not working

    leads too short

    parks too narrow, etc.

Had a guy pull in beside me last weekend down the right hand side. his flap was on the right of his car. lead wouldn't reach.

So he backed out and backed back in to put the flap on the other side (but at the rear of the park) and lead worked even less.

This leads to charging being less than relaxing. People constantly tapping on the window "how much longer will you be, i'm trying to get to XXX"

Maybe its just because i use chargenet?

I'd easily spend more than that a year on lawnmower petrol, which doesn't contribute to road wear and tear..

OMG, The other day I realized how much it costs me to fill the lawn mower. Bloody heaps.

I'm a self proclaimed expert in this field. If Monsieur Chapman was still about he'd be popping round mine for regular cups of tea over discussions about weight bias and its effects on handling. I'm not normally the sort of bloke who likes to boast about my talents but I am quite proud about my very scientific approach to modifying a small cars weight balance for testing purposes. I'll be more than happy to give you some sage advice on the subject when you need it...

Had a yarn to a guy charging a Leaf a few years back. Asked him about the towbar it had on it. He admitted that the only thing he ever used it for was holding the rack for his e-bike.

cant recall if we touched on this here (I say that a lot here)

Nissan does not want people towing with leafs. The factory has said that they are not suitable and you can find a few articles about it.

  7. Random EV comment.

These new fandangled super chargers are amazing. Plug in and it says 1 hr to go from (say) 15% to 100% BUT that first 70-80% fingerblasts its way in there bloody rapidly!

BYD has had an update (I presume) that allows the thing to be turned on while charging, so now the AC and radio etc work.

I actually don't mind the whole process! I feel like I always have to be somewhere doing something so having an excuse to sit idle on youtube etc with myself for company is quite nice.

My wife wants something as compact and versatile as a Honda Jazz, so about 4m long with over 300m3 luggage space. That eliminates most EVs, including the Leaf and the cheapest Chinese EVs. Renault Zoe could be an option?  Might have to settle on a hybrid until a suitable EV comes on the market.

Kinda sounds like she has deliberately picked criteria that exclude EV's

  9. You want a laugh, ask a byd owner if they can plug into the cars USB port without using both hands and asking for directions.

I got a charge cable into mine earlier and pretty sure I heard the thing moan when I finally found it.

Did you hear anything back about them bringing your range up with BYD?

Nothing, i need to send a reminder.

(not sure if i have said this) I have to be honest though- The range is either getting better, or the algorithm used to figure out the range is getting better (it has had about three updates during our time together). I haven't bothered to track total kms for a while, and its still inaccurate, but much much closer than it was.

I jumped on my electric skateboard on Monday morning and had forgotten I been going about on the weekend, was only charged up to 61% traffic was fucked as usual out west so I thought, bugger it I'll just cruise on the eco mode and Ill make it into the city at least. I made it to work with 12% left. Turns out if you aren't hammering it 100 the whole way your range is greatly increased. Wonder if they detune these ev to get better range?

The BYD has an eco mode which greatly reduces throttle response and acceleration, but strangely it doesn't really seem to do that much for economy.

Saying watchmakers lathe was probably incorrect, I won't be doing anything with the movements.

The grand plan is (somehow lol??) a small lathe - would love a myford or similar for doing face blanks, movement rings, bezels and chapter rings and the main shape of the case aswell as critical diameters and small mill for taking the case blanks and making them more case shaped, then a small soft metal desktop CNC mill for machining the faces into the various designs I may create.

Case backs unlikely to be screwbacks or even cliped on, most likely to be fixed with flush screws or I have a few ideas I've not seen on watches that I'd like to try.

Movements and almost certainly hands, crowns and gaskets would be off the shelf. For a while I could use catalog cases but I don't want to be limited and it takes away the rarity/value if the bulk of it isn't different to any other aliexpress backed watch brand.

Pipe dream / the more I think about this the less likely I am to jump off a bridge because I'm trapped working for the man

What is stopping you from pushing ahead now with the catalogue cases?

  13. hey mate.

If budget is a concern, definitely buy one already made. I honestly cant see how you could ever build one for less than just buying one. Even paying someone else costs for milling, facing, surface grinding etc etc would be hundreds/thousands of dollars.

Plus you do not have any facility for screw cutting or power feed, etc.

If the headstock has two big ball bearings- they might have huge clearances in thrust and no proper way of managing it.

I feel like a real debbie downer, but a lathe is one of the few things that people just shouldn't bother trying to DIY- especially if you intend to make super precision and aesthetically pleasing watch parts.

I have seen a few watch makers lathes go through TM for cheap, and a few small lathes (like i think you are trying to build) go for only a few hundred dollars.

Question for single phase AC motors.

I have a 3/4hp single phase motor that i would quite like to be speed controllable via a knob or switch. I see you can get ac speed controllers for fairly cheap but do any of you clued up electrical folk know is they will work and work well? not looking to go single to 3phase and most of the results i get when searching for answers are to do with this.

what im starting with is a farily sizable wood lathe, and am turning into a very small engineering lathe with the intention of machining soft metals and hopefully hard metals but only small parts. it has a 3" 3 jaw chuck on it to give you an idea on scale. somewhere between a watchmakers lathe and a small automotive lathe, as this that is what i want to use it for.

do AC motors become easier to stall if you dial them down via the power supply over mechanically? and if so at which point does that become a problem?

It has speed adjustments via belt and pulley changes but the slowest speed is still fast as fuck lol. dad picked it up for $20 cause the guy said the timber kept coming loose (throwing meter long bits of timber out at i assume mach 1 after looking at it)

i need to aquire a tiny to small cross slide and either buy, or make a tail stock, so suggestions on these also welcome. also keen on a tiny 4 jaw chuck aswell

You have your work cut out for you.

Really you need to do the bulk of your speed adjustment mechanically- the less you do with vfd the better the outcome will be.

I would be more concerned about the headstock bearings and if their clearances suit a lathe that turns steel. Maybe put a DTI on the chuck and force it from side to side and up and down to see what the deflection is.

I am also certain that the spindle will not be aligned as accurately to the bed/frame/tailstock as a normal centre lathe, and it may lack the adjustment methods necessary to get there.

    Edit.

The more I think about this (and the fact you need to make/adapt a tailstock) the less I think this is a viable idea. Highly recommend daily emails from trademe with new lathe listings (used) as there are some bargains around.
