  3. I'm more than happy just to keep it registered as a 49cc scooter, no WOF or cert to worry about, I'm more than happy to wear a helmet etc too. My cases have 49cc cast right on the side of them too... Kart wheels could be interesting for grass drifting haha!

Finally got around to pulling the rear fairing etc off today, found it was date coded Feb 1983 and from what I can find they started making the Gyro X in September 1982.Also found the paint code, NH-111 "Cortina white", my new plastics are NH-138 "Shasta white" which is a lot less yellow.Fairing had one tiny crack, managed to plastic weld the inside, touch of filler before paint and it'll be mint.Removed the remains of the step mount There is meant to be a battery mount and cable guides etc there! Couple nudes My bud in Japan is sorting out a decent second hand step mount and some more new genuine parts, I took a bit more time checking the part numbers this time!! On the bright side at least I've got smooth locks and nice new genuine keys. Hopefully will find the time tomorrow to take my plastics around a couple of local painters, going to get quotes on painting the lot in a metallic vs just the rear fairing, storage bin and ignition shroud in Shasta white.

  7. Looks like it's all going to clear just fine, will have to keep my cables routed nicely but should be mint as without having to cut and extend the stem tube. Think I might get a step mount from Yahoo in the next package, don't think I can bring myself to bolt a nice new step onto this mess even if I welded in some new steel Can get new genuine for $101.50, but they seem to be under $10 for good second hand ones on Yahoo auctions so yeah will pass on new lol Other than a stroker crank and big carb I can't think of too much else I need to order to finish this thing now, need to make my mind up on what I am doing paint wise pretty quickly and get that under way! Even if I stick with white the rear section etc needs to be repainted as it's pretty grotty and faded etc. Oh and if @64vauxhall is keen to take it on the seat needs a retrim I think and once it's all together and on the road I will start on building the new engine...
  8. Ha! That's awesome. Had another small package arrive from my friend in Osaka just before Got to love genuine parts! Didn't realise when I ordered it that the (rather pricy) ignition didn't come with the mounting plate which is the main ignition part I actually need Can get a new one for about $8, so I guess that means I'm going to have to order some more parts to make shipping economical...
  9. 10,000 is generally the accepted safe zone for stock cranks, mine often sees 11,000+ though lol
  10. That restriction plate is not in all SJ50's, they were supplied with the scooters to dealers and not all/many fitted them. The CDI story there I won't say is bullshit as I don't claim to be an expert, but in my experience it is a lot of bullshit lol, yes there's 5 wires but there's no magical rpm signal for a restrictor there. Some Chinese scooters with DC ignition has a looped wire which you cut to derestrict but I have never come across it on a Jap scooter. SJ50's are limited to 9000rpm but a cheap AC CDI unit solves that and unless your going to go with a ported cylinder, decent pipe and carb combo you won't need over 9000rpm anyway.

Bog = lean normally, normally with a moooaww noise if really lean like if you tried running with no air filter. 11g is 4t territory for rollers imo, my Gyro came with a couple NOS sets of Honda rollers one set is 8g and the part number cross references with 2t Gyro and some Dio models etc and the other set are 11g and match up to 4t.
  13. I've used those orange led flasher units in scooters, seem to work well for an 80c unit. Bugs looking lush as!

Attempted making some brackets to mount the lights yesterday, came out OK-ish until I tried to bend them and fucked them right up Spent a while last night doing a bit of CAD modelling (that's Cardboard Assisted Design) and worked out what I needed, took my template down this arvo along with a few beers. Bit of scrap 2mm steel Quick linish and a moment in the massive press bender Picked up a length of M8 all-thread and some nuts on the way home, used it to brace it all in position I swear the second one came out nicer! Nothing a sec with the grinder won't fix! Ready to go! May need to cut and extend the steerer tube on my stem, looks like the park brake assembly may foul on the fairings, will leave welding that to someone with a bit more skill as having the handlebars come off at speed can't be a good thing! Had a quick look through my stash of shit at the in-laws, turns out I've had Jog-style controls sitting in a box this whole time.

Last night I welded up the 2 little leaks I found on the exhaust, one I had just finished the weld about 1mm short leaving a pin hole, hammered the flange flat so it actually seals against the bore which got rid of a major leak and a lot of the excess noise. Then I went back through the carb to see if I could figure out why it was running so rich, turned out I'd missed that the needle had been lifted to it's max height so yeah dropped it back to the centre slot and reassembled everything. Should have got a video, but it's running so much nicer, still a bit of tuning needed I'd say but we'll see once it is ridable again. Courier came again this morning! Placed this order on the 13th of August, thanks to the big summer holiday it wasn't sent from Japan until the 22nd but it only took 4 days to get here, and that's when the fun started! Customs tried to charge me an obscene amount of $$ to apply for some special permit or license as they had decided this was a commercial order and that I must be running a business etc. Took so many phone calls and emails with everybody I talked to giving me a different story about what was going on and what I needed to do to get it cleared. Finally yesterday I managed to convince someone it was just bits for my own scooter and had it released, annoyingly between the 13th and yesterday the NZD/JPY exchange rates had changed and put the total over the threshold so I still had to fork out an extra $120. but thats much better then the $650odd I was being told earlier in the week!!! So enough words, you all just want to have a nose in my box right? A whole pile of genuine Honda goodness!! Would have really liked the rear plastic too, but not for $500 before shipping! So now it's pretty much time for paint and to tidy up all the little details, sort out bar controls and other smaller bits. If the rear plastic wasn't so far out of my reach I may have even considered sticking with the white, it's so crisp looking all fresh and new lol
  17. Bit more cutting, bending and attempts at welding Good grind and paint/heat wrap will solve it Only one little leak that I can find! Need to get a throttle control that will fit with a disc brake lever in place, a late model Gyro park brake lever assembly and ignition now
  18. Tapered the end of one of the mandrel bends so the ID is a hair bigger than the port of the Malossi cylinder. Obviously went back and filled the gap I missed lol Attacked the exhaust from @MopedNZ with a hacksaw, almost fucked it, dunno WTF China blend metal they used but it really didn't like the welder, had to drop the amperage way down to stop the edges melting away and it just wouldn't weld cleanly (likely user error but still) Getting there, gives me plenty of room for improvement when/if I attempt MK2
  19. Went and got a TIG lesson from a mate, told him I'd never used one before etc and expected to be zapping up some scrap. I was wrong, he set up the welder and explained it all, put 2 tacks on my handle bars and then put me straight onto welding up my bars without so much as a test spot weld! Added a couple M6 nuts to the underside of the cross bar so I have somewhere to mount gauges from. Not perfect, but a bit more grinding and a coat of paint will hide all sins lol Oh yeah, another parcel arrived today... We'll call that a 50cc bore kit for legality sakes... Also CDI, small end bearing, a pile of cable end fittings, 3 sets of wrong clutch springs, stickers etc. Think I'm going to build another engine rather than swap the kit onto the current one, need to talk to @Mr Vapour about getting one of the spare engine's cases blasted up all pretty I think.

  21. Nothing too exciting to report really One little Aliexpress parcel came this AM Looks the part for $12. And started having a look at my bars, this is how they come from the factory with mounts for all the trim and optional windscreen etc etc Bit of rough cutting later and there already starting to look a bit better Spent a bit of time with a flap disc cleaning them up some more, when I realized I'd better check that they actually fit on the AF35 stem haha And this should pretty much show my intentions with them Going to finally fire up my TIG tomorrow too, taking it and the bars down to a mates for a lesson. Also tried the new carrier rack on, took a couple little tweaks and the threads drilled out of the factory holes but it fits nicely (took a gamble on a late model rack fitting the earliest model) , I need to draw up some light mounting brackets to get cut out on the waterjet tomorrow too.
  22. Which style fitting is on the hub end of the cable? I may have one you can have but Honda used a couple different fittings.

Good mix of new and decent second hand parts New genuine Honda carry tray thing, HVFactory ignition trim, AF35 speedo cable, Daytona CVT stuff that I got just cause it was only ¥400 with free Amazon prime shipping lol. And also a few decent condition second hand parts, late model handle bars, front carrier rack, trim panel and genuine Zoomer lights. Once I'm not too scared to even plug my Tig in I've got a few ideas on what to do with the bars etc... Also these just arrived for the exhaust Sightly oversized at 27.5mm I'd, but should flow well at least lol
