    Diff Wirring

its hard to explain hold the part of the diff that bolts to the drive shaft in 1 hand then with the other hand try turning the drive shaft and see if there is any play in it. hope that helps
  2. Do you mean the bolts that bolt the bracket to the block or the bolts from the altermator to the bracket? This is what i have done i replaced the 2 bolts from the alternator to the bracket with 1 long bolt this makes it easier to remove the alternator and i leave the bracket connected to the block.

    Diff Wirring

to check if its the universal joint get under the car and try and turn the drive shaft buy hand if the shaft moves more than the dif head then most likely or joint is fucked.

    Diff Wirring

are you sure its the diff. I think i had the same thing i replaced the dif and found it wasnt that. when you apply the gas it makes the noise and then when you take your foot off it seems to make less noise. is that correct? i found that it was the universal joint on the drive shaft. half the bearing was missing.
  5. I found this site which might help you it deals with the New Zealand 5 speeds as they are different to the UK 1's http://www.mcs.vuw.ac.nz/~kris/escort/gearbox.shtml

    my cortina

i dont know if you can change it you would have to go talk to a gearbox shop. if you can find a 2000E gearbox it would be best as the gear stick is at the end of the gearbox as the others will have a long truck like gear stick

    my cortina

the hardest thing will be finding a gearbox 2000E this is the best gearbox for a 1500cc have a look at http://www.burtonpower.com then go to tech support and select "2000E Bullet" other things youll need to do 1) is get a pedal box if you cant find 1 i have my old 1 spare 2) you will ahve to get a fly wheel they use a 4 bolt "escort uses 6 bolt" 3) it uses a hydraulic clutch so you will need to connect all that. 4) drive shaft i think it will be different but easy to get 1 built. 5) getting a clutch is a pain you cant just go buy a kit no one has 1 they can only rebuild std 1's but you can change it to an escort clutch with some mod's. there is alot of things you have to get but it will be worth it hope that helps
  9. it keeps the gearbox shaft straight i didnt have 1 im my 3l v6 capri but i really should of put 1 in. if you can get a new 1 then you can just press it in with a hammer but if you need to get 1 out then the best thing is to take it to an engine builder who should have a small enough pulling tool
  10. i think the only difference is that the auto wont have a spiggot bearing.
  11. ive got the same seats in my cortina,But im throwing them out i just got some recaros which im going to recover
  12. have you tried one of those sockets with heaps of pins in it and when you press it on it take up the shape of the nut
  13. why dont you extend the wires and swap the lights for the wipers. and just use a central locking motor connect 1 end to ground and the other to a switch which is connected to 12V just make up a bar to go from the motor to the latch

  15. the MK2 had the 1600 xflow but there are a few differences 1. the sump and pick up the cortina bowl is in the front and the escort is in the rear. 2. the dip stick in the cortina is in the front and in the escort its in the rear. The best 1600 xflow to get is 1 from a 1600 sierra which was built in south africa.which has a xflow instead of a pinto. these are the newist 1600 built, so hopefully there is less rust, also it alot thicker and the the heads are stronger.ppl try and get them when they are building a formula ford engine. Also it comes with electronic ignition "no crappy points that dont like 7500rpm". "stupid me i found 1 at pick a part and i only took the dissy, and the next day when i found out how good the engine was i went back and it was gone! #*%#! i cound of got it for $100"
  16. yes they are different i cant remeber what the difference is, its something to do with the position of 1 of the pedals

yeah i was running a 28/36 and it went really well it just drinks alot of gas $20 gas i was getting 100km. i'm now changing from that to twin 40 dellotos. if you want to go to sidedrafts DONT get the manafold from Autoquip as it doesnt fit. I have gone for the from burton power. and it ends up being about the same price as getting 1 from here.

It all depends on how much you want to spend. if it is a 1500 pre crossflow and has the standard exhaust i would change that first and then go for a good carb. This is my Mk1 cortina to give you some ideas i got a 18 flat down the 1/4 mile with a smoking clutch thats why i have gone to a ceramic one. Twin sidedrafts are going on now.
  21. Not true. The english escort diffs we have here are all the same. The only difference is the ratios, the axles are no different and there is no strength difference in the centres. Even the anglias use the same diff centre - the 4.444:1 from these is commonly used in escort rally cars with no real problems. The difference is the axle size, most diffs have the small axles the GT cortina has bigger axles but the 1600 sport has the biggest. if you want a 4.44:1 diff you will find them in an escort panel van.
  22. I have done this engine swap twice. What you need to find is a MK2 escort with a 2l in it. eg a RS 2000, you will need the Gearbox and sump. The gearbox is shorter than the cortina 1 so you dont have to cut a new hole for the gear stick but you will still need to change the gearbox mounting points. The Escort sump has the bowl at the back of the engine but the cortina has it in the front you can use a hammer to make it fit (I did this on the 2nd engine swap). Other things you should do. Get the front struts and diff froma Mk2 1600 sport as the diff is alot stroger and can handle the power. If you want high compression then get the head off a 1.6l soc and put it on the 2l block this will give you 12.5 - 1 compression
