  1. Cheers. I wasnt being a dick. I was asking genuine questions.
  2. Futher to my questions above. Is it legal to grind off your firewall chassis number and have no chassis number ? I rang a repair certifier about this and he went silent on the phone for a few seconds and started questioning me why. In the end i got off the phone to him none the better.
  3. Ive been told its illegal to grind out your chassis number and replace it with another chassis number from a different vehicle. Is this true ? if so why is it illegal. Very hard to find any definate answers to this but easy to find lots of conflicting answers from the net and talking with LTSA Seems most people of authority say NO straight away but when questioned further they dont have any hard proof they know what there talking about.
  4. The main reason I have asked the question is I have the opportunity to purchase a very rare vehicle that basically has been rolled bolled and assholed. The main value in it is its rarity as only a limited number of them were produced. The body is reasonably common so getting parts to repair it shouldn't be too much of an issue but in reality it needs a new shell. If I was to repair it, it would need at a very minimum a half cut from the front pillars backwards and a nose cut meaning the only good bits I could salvage is the dash, firewall and engine compartment (and engine) Ive seen full restos of vehicles that have been pulled from swamps or found almost completely decayed away in paddocks. What are the legalities on re-shelling a car.
  5. In the event of a crash were parts of the body need to be cut out and replaced, how much of the body can be cut and replaced before its considered to be another car. Or during a full restoration of a classic car how much of the original car needs to be kept to keep it original. Example, I have a very rusty but original Mazda RX3. It needs new floors, quarter panels, roof, doors, bonnet, guards and chassis rails. The only part that's ok is the firewall with the chassis number attached. (along with interior and most of the running gear) Is it legal to replace all the panels as above and only retain the firewall as the only original part of the car ? If it is legal then it must be legal to swap the firewall into another shell. Although that doesn't sound quite right or legal. Anyone with experience in this ? (I don't have an rx3 just using it as an example)
  6. I stuck a vtec in mine. Build thread on here somewhere. It would torque steer all over the road when boost kicked in. Mine was an earlier shape. 1966 from memory. Cletus did the cert on it. Would love to build another one day. Next time with a v8 and full custom chassis and tubbed rear.
  7. Picture of the 2x trucks im swapping the cabs over on. Bottom picture is the truck ill be keeping. Reason im putting the rusty cab on my slide deck is ive sold the truck (minus the slide deck) as a front cut to be exported to the middle east. Will get the big grinder out next week.
  8. Story goes. I have had a 1992 slide deck Dyna truck for a few years now and have been through 3x engines during that time. After the last engine threw a rod i decide nah. Not going to spend any more money on it. I will remove the slide deck and refit it to a 2008 onwards Dyna. (will do this at a later date) So last week i picked up another 1993 dyna cab chassis with a 14b auto. It failed a COF due to rust in the cab. Ive decided to swap the cab off my slide onto the cab chassis and in process give the whole thing a good birthday. I will then build myself a nice flat deck for it (approx 2meters by 4.5meters) Big enough to forklift a car onto. Going to repaint the cab, chassis etc. Ive also swapped the 16" rims and tyres off my slide deck as the new cab chassis had horrible 205-60-17.5 tyres. Not a nice ride on the open road. Because its classed as a heavy vehicle i need to get the deck welded up by a "ticketed" welder then get the whole thing certified. So ill get a tow bar made up for it while im at it. The certifier is coming over this afternoon. Will see what i need to do.
  9. Below is a picture of a navara rear end i have in my shop at the moment. Definitely looks as though your missing a leaf. At least.
  10. My truck chassis is reasonably tidy, just very greasy and dirty. It has a few surface rust areas that are structurally very sound but will make the COF inspector frown. There is no bare metal any where. The areas that are starting to rust I will just wire brush and put a dap of PA10 primer (have a 1 litre tin of it already).
  11. Can anyone recommend a suitable paint to paint a chassis. I have recently purchased a truck and have removed the deck and cab. Im after a satin black finish paint that will stick and look reasonable good without too much prep work. I want to basically spray everything black minus the engine/gearbox, wheels and exhaust . Was hoping to just give everything a real good water blast to remove any grease, dirt etc. Once panted ill put the deck and cab back on and hopefully get a new COF. Ideas please.
  12. Ive been "searching the net" for information in regards to fitting an SRS system to a non equipted SRS vehicle but theres sweet FA information. Has anyone seen anything like this done befor ? Clint ? I think the idea of retrofitting an airbag steering wheel and passengers airbag is a great idea. It may even be something that becomes mandatory with LVV certification on certain vehicles in the future. Scratch builds maybe ? (i hope not) Electronically its all very possible using OEM parts, but Ideally an electronics manufacturer needs to make an after market module that all the sensors plug into. Sensors such as speed, ocupency, safety belt etc etc
  13. Moneys always a problem lol but you do get what you pay for. So much china nasty shit in the market nowdays, some of it good, most of it bad. After reading everyones opinions on the china dizzys i will do some more research and maybe even pop down to segidens for a chat. Ive done little research on the net and theres mixed opinions about the china stuff on overseas forums. Its always good to ask on here and get some real life opinions from you guys. Cheers
  14. Might have to splash out and pay the $600 to $700 for somthing decent.
  15. Got all excited at that price. signed up an account with summit. $200 USD plus shipping converted to NZD comes to $580 plus what ever i might get charged once it arrives here.
  16. Call me stupid but i just sold my old dizzy to someone today. Got $50 for it minus the cap. So yeah its $50 towards and electronc type. From the responses above i think ill start hunting for an MSD or similar.
  17. Second hand maybe. I was bidding on a second hand MSD a couple of weeks ago but bidding went crazy and wasnt keen to spend nearly $400 on a second hand dizzy with no warranty. I guess im happy to spend up to $300 for something good. But it seems most stuff on trade me anyway is up around the $650 + mark.
  18. What actually goes wrong with the china stuff ? Do they loose spark, bushes prematurly wear or ?
  19. Im a complete novice to what are good and ok brands to go for. Ive heard MSD Pro Billet is a good option ?
  20. M & H and Afterburner are a couple of the cheapy brands advertised on trade me. Also a local guy in town has brand new distrubutors for $120 that he imports from USA, although thy are made in china. The engine is for a street driven car, not for burnouts so im waning something reliable that works "better" than a points system.
  21. Looking to replace my old points style distributor with an electronic unit. Prices on trade me range from $150 for a china dizzy with built in coil up to nearly $1500 for almost visually the same item with a reputable name brand. Anyone had any experience with these china dizzys ? They look pretty but are they any good ? Will be installed into a Ford 289 with mildcam and 4 barrel carb.
  22. I hate alarms. First thing remove when i buy a car. Fucking beeping horns, sirens and flashing lights grrr. Those flashing led lights from jaycar are all you need. Steering wheel club locks are good aswell. Dont park your car in dodgy places. (dont cme to auckland) Just common sense stuff. Hidden kill switches are good too.
  23. Im guessing the main issue is the seating and safety belt arangement. You could cert a T bucket with a single centerally mounted seat but that seat would need to provide adequate support to your back in the event of a frontal or reaward colision. So a motorcylce seat would not be sufficient. Providing a quad bike meets all the requirments of being a 4 wheeled vehicle can you think of anything besides the seting that would be a problem ?
  24. Only the questions i have recently asked. I understand they are not "normal" questions but they are genuine all the same. Im not actually building a camry with a motorbike seat but curious about building a road legal "quad" as such and the camry sort of falls under the same description. Cheers
  25. I dont think the hobby car manual explains in enough detail about my above questions.
