I went to Manon Butler Motors (for those of you who know it) and talked to Bruce. He said I have what is known as 'diff whine' and it only gets worse. Caused by the crown and pinion not meshing properly. He said I either have to replace the crown and pinion and get an alignment or replace the diff. I have no idea where in the hell I would source these bits, so I'm not sure what to do. Don't really wanna go back to the regular diff. Is it possible to just do a Hilux LSD diff head conversion? As the axels and the disc brakes (which have just been reconned: $700) are sweet. Or is it a better idea to use an entire diff? Thanks for all your help Leon

Ive taken the hat off, and there are no metal filings in there. What do you mean by the drive shaft moving more than the diff head?

Sweet, where exactly is the universal? My dif is quite 'diff'erent (hahahah) to an escort diff, they dont have torque tubes, do they?

Deaf Rattle: I topped up the oil, should I try and replace it all? I would be quite keen for you to listen, are you in Auckland? I can replace it myself, its just that this is a rare as fuck diff and I will never find a direct replacement in NZ. mkcortina: That's right. When I jack up the rear and go to listen to it, its soo loud that it sounds like it's comming from everywhere, but I'm pretty sure it was the diff housing. Is it possible to do some kind of hilux conversion in which you only swap the head and maybe the torque tube?

Ok, I have figured that it is my diff that is the problem. I'm hoping it's nothing too serious. It's making a horrible wirring sound on gas, no idea why. Does anyone have any clues before I go and take the car to somewhere horrendously expenaive? Leon

There has been soo much R&D done on this in Aussie, and they haven't really come up with anything relatively easy. It's annoying. Stilling looking for that Cordia Turbo dizzy.

If it's my diff, i'm going to cry. The thing is, if it was the diff, wouldn't I heard it all the time when I was on throttle? This is only when i'm on lightly...

The Kent 1300s are RWD engines tho, I'm not thinking they would work in a FWD application...

If you're going to do something like that, I suggest an Uno Turbo engine, 1.3 or 1.4 both go hard as nuts. Plus, it'll save me having to do the conversion myself one day

I filled the diff up so I doubt it's that. Should I have the hand brake on or off to test this?

Yeah, I don't have a slide hammer tho. Gonna take it to a mechanic and jack up the back, see where they think it's comming from.

I'm going to cry if it's the diff. Might be time to shell out for some Hilux love.

That was a different problem, dude. I'm talking about the wirring. That grinding noise was comming from the frount.

Hmm, maybe I'll take it up to my mechanic and see what he says. Don't wanna do that unless it's absolutely necessary.

Hey guys, I'm getting a horrible kinda whiney wirring noise coming from the rear of my car somewhere. I think it might be one of the wheel bearing. The problem is, I can't figure out how to get to it. What do I do? Cheers Leon
