But I mean really stripped to a shell...

I have my car stripped down to a shell, and am considering chemical dipping to strip the paint and other matter. I have had a place in Rotorua recommended, but that would be a long haul from Auckland with a car trailer. Does anybody know of other shops around the north island that provide this kind of service?

I'm looking for a weekend/evening panel repair/fabrication course for DIYers. Forming and welding in patch panels, etc. Does anybody know of a suitable course? Preferably near the north shore.

I don't believe that the areas were designed to flex (the flex is likely due to the cost effectiveness of spot welding). However, the flex would have been present during testing. You are correct that the stress would be transferred elsewhere, and strengthening the shell likely pushes the car into untested, unknown territory. The same risk would exist with the installation The value of seam welding cars of a similar category to mine is supported by its continued use by premium restomod companies like Retropower, who state that seam welding of window and door apertures greatly improves rigidty of the cars they do, and Alfaholics. Granted, these shops likely understand the additional strengthening required to mitigate any shift in stress.

Does anybody have an idea of what is required to legally seam weld (or braze) a road car's chassis? I have an old 70's car I have stripped down to a shell. I would love to seam weld structural seams to stiffen it up without requiring a roll cage. However, I hear that you now have to be a certified to weld structures. Can anybody advise? Ta

Can anyone suggest a make/model that came out with a decent 70mm throttle body? Mechanical control, not fly by wire. Idle bypass valve would be grand. Ta!

Are there any recommendations out there for restoration shops that can work with paper thin rust-prone Italian steel? Someone knowledgeable enough to fix some rust spot and paint a bare metal shell competently enough for it to last decades?

Is there anywhere in Auckland that offer hobbyist-level tig welding and panel beating teaching?

Lowering my 70s error car really messes with the suspension geometry. To undo the negative impact of the lowering, I need to adjust a few suspension attachment points. In this case the rear trailing arms need adjustment, by raising the body attachment points by the amount I am lowering the car.
Does anybody know the certification implications of such a modification, and what route I should take to make the change above board?

My car was liberally fish oiled by the panel beater I used a long time ago. Now that I'm re-restoring it, I need to remove a lot of it. I hate this stuff.
Does anybody have any good tips for efficiently removing it?

Does anybody have experience with the Bossweld TS200? Looking for an AC/DC Tig welder for fabrication work at home.

Did you make any progress with this, @Testament?

Does anyone have an indication of what it costs to have the exterior of a stripped car media blasted? Not sure I can bar the struggle of sanding my car back to bare metal.

Does anybody know the legality of bucket seats in a coupe? Would the car have to be re-classified to a two-seater, or is it acceptible if the seats have some sort of pivot mechanism?
-
I seem to ask a lot of these hypotheticals. Does anyone have a ballpark on what media blasting the exterior of a car to bare metal costs?

Hey folks,
I'm stripping back my car for some body and paint work. I'll be stripping the paint off on the relevant panels, but I'll be paying someone to do the panel and paint work. How should I treat the panels once stripped to prevent surface rust? In the past I used an acid product (I don't recall what it was called). However, on the same car I experienced paint lifting from the bare metal some time later.

This is a long thread and I'm having trouble finding a place where stripping a car to bare metal is discussed. Is there a decent thread on here on the topic? Most interested in sanding (disk grinding with paint removal attachments) and media blasting.

I've got a vinyl dash i pretty good condition, but it has a number of cracks. Does anyone have a ballpark on what it costs to get a vinyl recover for a dash? I'm figuring out whether it is better to purchase a new dash rather than restoring.

Hey folks,
Does anybody here have experience with ceramic coating of extractors? Were you happy with the results? Does anyone have ballpark figures on what this modification costs?
-
That is much more expensive than I anticipated. Thanks for the insight.

Does anyone have a ballpark on how much it costs to re-chrome a bumper? Also if you have any recommendations for shops that do this kind of work in Auckland, I would appreciate hearing them.

And if you happen to have a rotisserie not in use in the Auckland region, let me know. I will need to mount this on something when I get the car back.
