  1. Haha all this talk of salty and over head. picked up said salty head today. started pulling the head off the existing engine. decided I want to inspect the pistons in this one too. plus tidy a few other things up, put a fresh HG on it with the salty head. check the turbo out etc
  2. Have ordered up a set of replacement HLAs (hydraulic lash adjusters) for this. coming from Aussie. NZ has nothing, no parts departments know what the hell they are. also have a GTR head to pick up locally.
  3. So I kind of went too full on with the throwbacks this year. not only acquiring a set of recaro fishnets and a stainless dumpy for the rotor conversion. I seemed to have impulse purchased myself a 89 bg8 Mazda gtx hatch, but in Rallycar steez. the body is immaculate condition, with a very well built cage, terratrip and terraphone already set up. 3 sets of rims and tyres and 2 spare motors and a host of other bits. score right???? well the car was sold with some “ lifter noise”. ok sure, that’s fine. I decided to pull the spare motors apart. motor 1 “run bottom end”… missing all lifters, hmmm. Head off for a look. Oh boy, pistons are umm smoked, ring lands are awol. bottom end however is mint. Block could be saved with a light hone, head has some heavy combustion chamber damage. To the parts shelf it goes. motor 2 “rebuilt motor but has lifter noise”…. missing lifters also, Dafuq. head off, wow looks like shit has gone through the motor aswell. Bottom end also mint. Could actually use these bearings aswell. motor 3 “ in the car, runs but lifter noise”. hla’s have lots of play. Pulled the sump to inspect. Bottom end is tight and super clean. No crap in the pan bar a small amount of sludge build up. turbo exhaust side has a fair amount of oil residue in there. I will replace all lifters in this motor and test it out. It starts so good, does die out because some numpty has cut the intake pipe too short to fit the restrictor, and isn’t sealing. False afm reading I guess. car has new discs and pads fitted. savage gauges, yup they’ll go straight to the bin. new alloy radiator too, full width dealio. new Silverster Hans spec belts and some sick stickers bro. Love the fit of the Racetech seats too. plans: sort the lifters etc, get it running like a boss. gain by msnz license finally and get an authority card. hopefully find a spare gearbox for it. go full send on some club stuff.
  4. Double hunters, what does it mean? no driving haha moved them into their semi permanent spots for now. I need to modify the exhaust on the green one. then replicated it to the grey/red/primer/bog one.
  5. Choice auw engine and box in. Driveshaft fitted up. only have a part of the gearbox crossmember to finish as the original was lost. sway bar will need to be removed, and new headers done or modify these to clear the steering … fouls by 40mm may be able to chop the bottom 100mm or so off the headers and fit a 4-1 collector to change the angle
  6. Confirmation it’s never been run up from the rebuild.
  7. Ok so I decided to pop the timing cover off for a looksie. oh hi
  8. Little ae86 4age that was rebuilt by GER to stock specs. hasn’t been run up yet. will need to get some lubes going through it before it sees any rotational efforts. I picked up a pair of carbs and a manifold for it. Got some MRP injector bungs to install. all I really need to complete it now is a hyperpak ignition system and rebuild the carbs and sort the linkage system out.
  9. Hey guys, any of you awesome chch folk able to have a look at a potential purchase for me? about to do a mega throwback of epic proportions. Those that know my past rides may have an idea .
  10. What’s ya thoughts if twin 40 dellortos on a ae86 bluetop bigport motor? never seen or heard of any dump figures compared to an injected motor. ps I had a ae92 fxgt with redtop small port motor, lived on the limiter for 2 years/100,000kms before I sold it. only ever killed a clutch plate(spring broke). That was a great car
  11. Not much of an update tbh, Haven't done much on it since I got it running. I have decided to take the racetech out in favour of a pair of fishnet recaros. These are much better for comfort, these will be dropped off to be tidied up soon. But on another note, I have decided to change things around slightly. I'm going to take the 12a out of this one and replace it with the 4age. The 12a will go into the other car as it needs a rebuild, so I'll do that at some stage between the 4link install and panel work on the red car. The 4age I have: Ae86 big port bluetop motor that is fresh and has been unstarted since the rebuild. This will need to be lubed up before anything gets done on it. I have a carb manifold on its way to fit my twin 40s.. I already have the driveshaft for this as it came out of the parts car as an ex 4age swap. I only need a hyperpack spark thingy to complete the setup. Change some wiring around and find a clutch slave. Build a new exhaust. Job done. Cheap and easy runner.
  12. Well well well... Picked up the old tart from sprint re today, got my first drive in it since the swap.. I'll do a run down on what they did shortly.. But I'm so stoked that it starts a pulses away. It is low on comp but it's even across all faces. A refresh will be happening next year along with a respray. But here's an idle video
  13. Bloody glad I sent it in to Sprint RE. Theyr mounting the seats for me and uncovered some cracking around the original mounts.. Not cool. So we made a plan, and then they spoke with Clint about the new mount plates etc. Totally stoked with their service. Quite funny, it turns out that I've known Jason from Sprint RE from back in the day when I built RX3UTE and my rotor van. I did my entire rotor van conversion in Jason's workshop in 1 day, drive in drive out, that was 18 years ago. Small world life..
  14. Just went for a little "sprint" down the road. Dropped the old girl off to Sprint RE in Waiuku to get the last bits tidied up, and a tune. Fit the seats and get comp test.. Fingers crossed she's all good..
  15. Working on Sundays. It's exhausting work. So I decided to pull the headers and make them tuck in a bit more. This has given the steering arm an extra 15mm clearance. I wasn't happy with 10mm clearance. Then set about making the rest, to include a flexi and 2 three bolt flanges. I have 2 cotton reel mounts in there at the moment and a hanger on the dumpy. About to make a 3rd cotton reel mount for just behind the resonator/flange to carry that load. Then I'll drop it all, finish the top welds and then spray it in high temp paint. I'm pretty chuffed with it so far, will also check for knocking and clearence issues, but so far it all looks good.
  16. Porn, swanky wanky filter unit... Not cheap, but it does do the job. Just need some k&n spray for it
  17. Should I stick with the throwback theme? Rotary conversion 13s Dumpy Fixed back race seats. They sit way too low anyway. But I would like something with a bit more holding power.
  18. Radiator and heater hoses completed. Even clamped off. Got a drive belt, but alas, too short.. Got my bits to complete the wiring.. 6 way fuse block with bus bar. Will run my fan, ign and fuel pump from this via relays. Got a fuel filter to fit too.
  19. Bought a rx7 clutch master, and got it to fit on a stock unmodded hunter pedal box. Only have to make a pushrod and get another AN fitting for the -3 hose.
  20. GET A ROTOR!!!! who remembers hearing that being yelled out in town?
  21. Done a bit more wiring stuff. Chucked the battery in it, was keen to see if the clutch was working. Had it turning over in neutral, then in 1st..then tried with the clutch in..... Yay no movement.. Then tried letting the clutch out.. She's snappy, but works. So then I got keen and tried firing it up.. She ran... Too fn loud though. Exhaust is next on the list.. But it runs and moves... Pumped Now I need to figure out how to wire up this fan relay and temp switch.
  22. Clutch line sorted..... But... The pedal is real hard to depress. The slave is like a 3/4" bore and the master is the factory hunter one, probably 1-1/8" so I'm guessing it's poorly matched and just being gay. Or just a super heavy pressure plate. However I now have a nice -3 AN line for it. It's getting pretty close to being done. I'll swap the suspension from the other car to this one, cos the rear shocks work, and the fronts are tight with proper lowering springs, I'll swap the whole leg along with the brake hoses because I'm sure the ones on this have collapsed.
  23. Muff placement is on point. Managed to refit the rad and oil cooler, chucked the headers back on, sussed the gauge wiring. Only have the tach wire to extend over to the coils and make up a new alt harness-easy peasy. Really need to straighten up the shifter because it fouls on the centre console in 5th and reverse. Almost touching in 3rd and 4th.
