  1. I have  a Uniden DRF7, mid range priced unit. Its never let me down, been very reliable. You can filter the K bands to avoid false alerts. It also remembers the false spots via gps so learns its route. Picks up cam vans well and knows where all the speed cameras are.

Paid $580 but theyre about $650 now.

Only had a ticket the one time I forgot to grab it..........

    Looks to be original paint?

Given the well documented water solubility issues these whips suffered from, OG paint means the nasty surprises will be limited to what's immediately apparent.

Draw through turbo A12 I hope?

Yup OG paint. The floor is non existent, some geezer back in the day installed some foam pvc stuff under the carpet and its just sweated out. From the floor upwards, its pretty darn good (usual bits and bobs).

A14 Turbo or.......... FJ20ET. Undecided yet, it will be factory A12 for the revin though.

As tempting as it is to send a photo of thr cst with new plates on it to him saying no worries, all sorted

    You shouldn't do it

Haha extremely tempting but I bet he will just cause another drama.

So you got a set of white plates printed with the same rego number?

If so, only thing I'd be worried about, would be him using the black plates on a car and getting tickets etc , being able to drive around "with a wof and reg" ie yours

That is indeed by only concern, however, there are not many 140j's in NZ so would be unlikely

My brother is in a similar situation with a car he bought. A previous owner put the rego on hold, he bought it under the impression he was going to have to revin, and the testing station said, "nah that's in the system on hold". They said to have a yarn to the cops about it and the cops said "Get new plates for it, you bought the car, if he wants to complain he's admitting to something illegal"

Ive just ordered a new white set from Licensys.co.nz. $23.80 lol. Plan is as per Bling to get Doozie to make some repro ones for 'events'.

How much looking does $3000 get you? I'd just get new plates on it and live with the fact it won't have the original plates. I've only had imports which never had black plates. Get personalised plate done in the repro style from Dooli(?) And forget that guy ever existed. They clearly think they have good bargaining power to extort that money. Prove them wrong.

Just tell him you will dereg the plates and tag, or give him $500.

Either you get what you want for about what the hassle of sorting it out through NZTA and getting new plate issued would cost and he gets $500, or you go through the hassle and he ends up with fuck all

    That's where I think I'm getting to.

I can order new plates in black or custom JDM spec from Kiwiplates for $199. Still doesn't solve the fact he has the OG plates.

Thanks everyone for their input. Im still pondering on best way to proceed as I like having black OG plates :spiderman:

Yep, this is the simplist solution.

Not having the OG plate and body tag is less of a hit than any other shonky idea.

It's all about having possession of the car with the  stamped chassis number, which you have. Body tags don't mean shit unless you have a 70s nz assembled car which some don't even have a stamped chassis number.

Same thing happened to a chap I know with an rx2, yes he wanted the OG plates and body tag but he didn't want to pay the exuberant price for them.

Or you could make a blackmail complaint to Police, if you can find a sympathetic ear and be prepared to waste a year of your life with going through court.

Yep I agree with the MR6A form. However, I want to retain black plates of the original era. If I do MR6A form, Ill get a PUK plate from 2022 that ill have to personalise to make black - doesnt sit well having this on a 1970's classic

  7. I may as well be open here:

I bought car for 2k with rego on hold. No plates and missing tag. Rego on hold. Car is now in my name (just got the PDF from NZTA stating this).

I looked at this car in 2014 when it popped up for sale,  it wasnt the right time so I didnt purchase it. Regret. I took photos and somehow i took one of the vin tag so I have all the details.

It popped back up again and I grabbed it this time, wasnt going to let it slip again. It came without the tag and plate.

I still had old mates mobile number so tried to call and text - he said he has the plates and tag but wont find them unless I pay him his day rate at time and a half. The figure was 3k somehow..... anyway, hes not being a GC and I dont want to pay that.

So now, I can get the tag remade and I have a friend who can make the plates as they have the tools. Or I can order a new plate via custom plates and get it in black and white (it already is a black plate). My concern is up until i get it on the road, he could chuck those plates and tags on another car? I probably have 5 years work ahead of me to get this one back to WoF standard.

Does the car in question have a stamped number in the body anywhere?

If you have a car with no legitimate ID tag or plates , you should probably sort it sooner rather than later, ie go to a testing station that deals in re registration stuff, there's a form to fill out and they can put a new 17 digit vin number on it and new plates etc

If you get some repro plates and a repro chassis tag it's just going to look like you are the dodgy one

Can you get the ID tag and plates off the other guy?

Do you own the car as a whole? Is it in your name? Or was it some dodgy thing where you bought a parts car and they kept the ID

Yep it has a stamped vin number on chassis that matches the stainless screw on tag. Old mate has the  OG tag and plates. I know all the info on the tag (have a photo of it and it on carjam) and you can get repo ones easily.

I hypothetically own the car as a whole, plate is in my name yes. Ive got car off a guy who got it off oldmate 7 years ago, old mate not playing ball and wants 3k for the tag/plates
