Tidy looking car, suits the whitewalls actually!

I am indeed, I thought about putting a V8 or a bigger six in for awhile but I like the factory six so I've had it rebuilt. Cam, port and polish, bigger valves etc. All the usual hop ups I guess, I'm excited to see how it will perform though.

The body on it looks pretty solid! Mark 3's seem to be the worst for rust out of all of the Z cars but this looks good.
I like Zephyrs.
Yeah she's not too bad, rusty in all the usual places for a mk3 but nothing too terrible. Me too, always liked them since I was a wee lad.

my grandpa had one as a company car, he was a sales rep and used to hoon all over the north island
Unfortunately I didn't, I was underage at the time haha. Who did he work for? This one used to be a Fisher and Paykel company car.

Thanks man! Feels good to be back into it after so long!

Once the engine and interior had been removed from the car I started stripping the underseal. Used a heat gun, scraper, hammer and chisel. In hindsight I should have used dry ice but I didn't know about it at the time! Next time I will definitely build a rotisserie as chippng this stuff off while lying on your back on a concrete floor is bloody awful.
As to be expected I uncovered a few bits of rust but not too bad overall. Before I bought this car I had another that I was going to rebuild but the state of the shell meant it made far more sense to repair this one.
Shell stripped and ready to go to the panel beaters. The panel work is being done by a friend from the car club. He has done top notch work on lots of the club members cars so I wasn't going to turn him down when he offered to complete the work on my car.

Hello again OS, figured it was about time I put up a build thread for my Zephyr. A bit of back story first though, some of you may have seen the thread that I had for my Camaro, I did a few bits and pieces to that car and then sold it about 18 months ago to help fund my OE. My girlfriend and I spent six months travelling around Europe, it was awesome and I don't regret selling the car to fund travelling in the slightest. Since coming home I've found it pretty weird not having a goal to be working towards and combined with facebook reminding me that it'd been four years since panel beating started on the car I figured it was about time to do something with it!
I bought the car from a member of the Zephyr Zodiac car club who'd had it sitting in the shed for about ten years. He'd been planning to chop the roof and convert it into a V8 coupe but for whatever reason hadn't got around to it. I spent a few months rebuilding the brakes, steering etc and then got it a wof. It was my daily driver for about six months until the head gasket went. I figured that I may as well rebuild the motor instead of doing just the head gasket and as these things tend to do it snowballed and I ended up stripping the entire car.
I got a few bits and pieces done and then motivation petered out and I ended up buying other cars, pursuing other interests etc. I turn 24 in Octbober this year so I'd like to have the car driveable, even if not entirely finished by then. Please bear with my while I dig out some old photos and get the thread up to date with the current state of the car.

Very nice man! I had a gunmetal grey one but I always preferred them in white. Looking forward to seeing more on this!

Hey boes, looking at going halves on a car with my folks so that we can go to club runs etc/I can daily this bish while I finish my project car.
This is the car in question: http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/ford/auction-1211346703.htm
Know my way around these things relatively well so can probably point you in the right direction as far as things to look for etc. Happy to reimburse you for your time however you like. Unfortunately the auction finishes soon so there isn't heaps of time but had to sell another car first. Any help would be much appreciated, feel free to pm me or text me on 0278283002. Thanks in advance, Sam -
It seems to run okay once it's warmed up with the high fuel pressure but it chews through the fuel even when I baby it. It's got VL turbo injectors and a VL turbo ecu but I don't really know all the ins and outs as I've never played around with a turbo engine before. Yeah I'm pretty iffy on the fuel reg, just have to save some coin once I'm working again and get it tuned properly. Any recommendations for tuners in or around Christchurch?
-
Thats exactly what's worrying me. It's my only transport currently so just wanting to make sure I'm not going to blow it up if I lower the fuel pressure. Might leave it how it is until I can get a widebandAt least put a wide band on it or get it on a dyno, otherwise you are just guessing and risk blowing it up. Someone may have cranked up the fuel pressure as a band aid fix
-
Thank you good sir! Is it worth setting the pressure slightly higher than stock to avoid any chance of leaning it out or will it not make any difference? Can high fuel pressure cause any damage? Never really fiddled with efi before.

Hey guys, I've just purchased a car running an rb30e+t. It has a rising rate fuel pressure regulator but while checking it over yesterday I noticed the adjuster nut and stud was just finger tight. Fuel pressure at idle is sitting at just under 70psi which seems way to high? Does anyone know what sort of pressure it should be running at idle, I haven't had a plus t before so not too sure how this may affect the fuel pressure. Wondering if I should drop the pressure or will that create other issues? Also I don't have a wideband at this stage but am assuming its running quite rich as it is very thirsty and smells quite fuely. Any help would be great. Cheers

Hey boes, Threeonthetree very kindly offered to check the car out for me but he's unfortunately been swamped with work. Would anyone else possibly have a bit of time free to go and have a squizz on my behalf?
Cheers,
Sam

Can do. I've owned a few VLs as well so can give it a deceng once-over.
Send me a PM.
PM'd.
Haha the 'dose' seems to have only made it here from Aussie recently. Sounds cool but I bet the novelty wears off pretty fast when your turbo fails

Hey fellas, would someone be willing to check out a car for me? I'm overseas for another couple of weeks and I'm worried that it will be gone before I get home otherwise. This is the vehicle in question: http://www.trademe.co.nz/1181119846
My main concern is rust, I've been wanting to build a VL turbo for quite awhile so not too concerned about the noisy gearbox. Hoping for something that I can drive as I upgrade it ideally. Obviously willing to pay for your time, buy you beersies etc.
Thanks in advance,
Sam
Edit, it's in Auckland.

What's the go with owning/driving a replica police car? Does it require a permit or something?

Congrats on getting road legal, this thing is sweet!

I've always had a thing for VL Commodores and have recently sold mine Just out of curiosity really, does anyone know the owner of the manual, white VL sedan with Calais tail lights, low on some sort of mesh wheels (maybe BBS or Simmons) that's been getting around in CHCH recently? I've seen it in the Bryndwr/Burnside area a couple of times. I just want to pine over pictures of it really, it's nice to actually see a tidy one around.

Not too sure on the future right now, waiting for my VL to sell so I can do some work on the front suspension. Slam and some nice wide wheels would be nice through. Just a baby 10 bolt diff in it but it seems ok, I suspect the ratio has been changed though as the speedo is quite a bit out.
Haha yea the blindspots make merging a bit difficult sometimes. Did the wrap around rear window help like Chevrolet claimed?

Picture dump.
Not super way happy with this thing right now and the want for a hot rod is super strong so we shall see...

Few pictures of the engine bay and finished boot. Still a few things to tidy up but it looks far better.
Finished product. (Apart from bonnet, honestly quite like it without it)
And a boring one of the boot floor.- 4

I will give that a go! Thanks man!

Nothing too exciting to report really, been cleaning up some rust in Leila's boot. I wire wheeled the rust and paint off the floor before applying some rust converter.
While waiting for the rust converter to dry I started stripping and masking the engine bay so I can give it a tidy up.
Hopefully I can figure out how to upload more than three photos next time, should have some photos of the first lot of paint tomorrow.

Trying to upload another post on my thread but I can't seem to upload anymore than two photos because the image size is too large. What am I doing wrong here?

I have no idea what sort of power the engine will be making, in hindsight I wish I'd been able to dyno it before it was rebuilt. I know that the stock cast flywheels don't like to rev, the fella that's built my engine has had a couple come apart although at somewhere around 8k rpm. I bought a custom solid flywheel off him and a beefier clutch which he reckons will handle the abuse. I considered a barra turbo and even went as far as measuring the engine up to see whether a 2JZ-GTE would fit but I''ll see how the original donk goes for now.
