so ratty - so mid 80s evil car movie vibe - love it!
Actually looks like a really good clean up would make a huge difference alone, before pouring much $$ into it.
Agreed, its been sitting around under a tarp for a couple of years not going anywhere due to the guy having an unfortunate accident with a skid steer running over him and fucking his back up, so low cars are off the books for him now.

Could be worth a shot? Haha
Else surely someone on the US makes reproduction ones. Can't imagine it would be cheap to get someone local to make a one off. @Archetype may be able to share some insight
Thats perfect!

Well, figured I’d just add to this post.. I seem to change cars pretty regular so will see how a combined thread works out for me.. probably more efficient as opposed to me actually owning and keeping a car.
Since my life direction changed earlier in the year I decided working on the Mustang and sinking 10’s of thousands of dollars into getting it onto the road wasn’t on my horizon, so selling and freeing up some cash for the shed build would be much smarter.. few months went by, lots of offers on all sorts of tempting things were thrown at me even though a straight sale was preferable.. got close on doing a deal on a 96 Corvette but the guy backed out, then a guy contacted me about this thing.
Made an executive decision that doing a swap on this was a good idea.. reason being rego on hold and only needing a couple of things for a WOF.. he always wanted another Mustang in this shape so the deal was done. Towed it down to a little place called Kaweka, had a good chat with a nice guy who is into his cars. He has 3 mid eighties Camaro’s, and is a fan also of 55 Desoto’s with a nice example out back.
Anyway, I feel there may be a few more than just a “couple of things” to do on the Pontiac, but I like it a lot, plan is to sell it once it’s on the road (we’ll see) so let the journey begin on (yet) another new car chapter haha.
Goodbye Mustang..
Hello Pontiac.. Trans am conversion and honeycomb mags for the win.
Is a factory 400 but sporting a Vortec 350 currently. Needs a damn good tidy up..

GATEPOSTS!
EVER!
I'd love to make giant gateposts like that on my residential section. Thanks man.. yea I had this idea a few years ago at my last place when we had a few sitting out the back of our yard at work, but they were only 1.5m out of the ground when I did those.
I'm always looking at random shit and trying to work out what I can use it for, so I'm happy I came across some more for sale so I could do it again only betterer.. they create a bit of a statement when you drive up to the gate that's for sure.

This has been a long time coming for myself.. been through a few tough and challenging times in the last couple of years and I decided now is the time in my life to establish a foundation for me, and for my kids to come back to when they need to.
Soo.. this thread isn’t going to be full on (like with my cars), I’ll add to it when something interesting gets done, but I’ll be trying to set myself up to be as self sufficient as I can and simplify my life in the process if that’s at all possible.
Where do I start? The front gate of course!.. I picked up a whole lot of 2nd hand fence posts off the company that built my gate, bit of a waterblast and they came up pretty clean. Also got hold of a couple of wharf post offcuts, these are about half a metre in diameter and 4m long.. only cost me $20 each cos the guy thought they weren’t treated.. didn’t worry me either way, but shit they’re heavy. I got 3 on my trailer and that was it.
Drilled and hand rammed all the posts along the front boundary. Waiting for my fence rails to turn up hopefully in a week or so then I can finish it off.
Decided to get a guy in to dig the holes for the gate posts.. thank fuck I did cos these holes are 1.6m deep and about 600mm wide. Saved so much time as well.
Had dad with me helping with this as they’re up this way for a visit from down south. So grateful for his help/patience/advise.. he’s in his 70’s and still going strong.. got the gate hung and it all worked out rather well. Was thinking I’d need to cut the posts down, but when they dropped in the hole they looked great so will leave them and probably make some kind of metal/copper cap to protect the exposed end.

yea, the original gauges needs to be taken out of the housing with this digital circuit board mounted at the front.

Does the digital dash all work?
If it works and you like it just terminate it at the fuse box and try and refresh individual wires to the right places.
If it doesnt you could always change to a custom analog dash. Would be loads out there to choose from and you'd only ever do it once.
The digital dash was prob why it was so hard to find an off the shelf loom.
Thankfully being a small block chev you only need three wires or so to run it.
Yea I believe it was all up and running.. it’s in km/h as well so I reckon it’s been special ordered from the states.. just surprisingly there’s only 3 or so wires coming out the back

Do they call them a harness in the states? I'm sure there's an off the shelf one for that model available somewhere. Would be a faff but prob easier in the long run...
Yea wiring harness.. I did see a couple of harnesses on the Classic Industries website, they did say compatible with my year

Oh yeah Id gut that entire loom and start from scratch. With a loom that big I assumed efi/tbi or something.
Take one day to gut it entirely. Then a full weekend running each one out one at a time. I prefer American Auto Wire as the wires are a lot softer than your typical Narva branded ones from Repco so you get them out of the way easier. Then you'd never have to worry about it again.
I cant seem to find a specific one for 1983 so Id get something generic like this.
Sweet cheers, yea I couldn’t see anything for ‘83 either. This car has push button start and an aftermarket under dash heater unit and digital dash also, so I’d assume these things are easy enough to wire in

Lovely car!
What is that loom for? Does it have TBI? I can't quite tell from the pic.I rewired my C20 in a weekend with an American Auto Wire kit. Boring but done and dusted and everything works.
Thanks man.. nah no TBI.. just a 355 from what I’ve found out with a MSD/carb setup, so no need for an ECM I believe.
Looking at all the options at the mo.. you make it sound so easy lol- 1

I did find this
https://www.hawksmotorsports.com/82-92-camaro-firebird-dash-harness-used-select-application/
as im guessing your dash loom is cut up. otherwise might have to ring around some of the wreckers here or find a facebook iroc page and post. and im not sure also if an 89 loom will be the same or not.
the engine bay as looking as if doesn't have any factory stuff anymore like engine related i would just start again and possibly just buy a rewire starter kit as has the wiring and colours and fuses and relays already.
I think there is a few auto sparky type people on here
Yea it looks like the wiring has been hidden in the engine bay.. not necessarily a bad job, but where it comes out is just a mess of wires. There is an 83 in a wreckers out west but the guy said the wiring loom isn’t available sadly. I just don’t think they wanna go to the trouble of taking it out. Cheers for the link too, I’ll check it out.

Yea when I saw the choc blocks and electrical box for a house I thought ‘oh fuck’

Do cheap mexican made replacement looms exist!?
Not sure, I might have to do some googling.. I’ve just been contacted by a guy who has a complete loom from an ‘89 (less taillight loom) that he’s pulled out of his car cos he’s turning it into a track car.. wants $50 for it and although it looks like a mess of wires it’s all complete down to all the relays and ECM which I don’t seem to have.. just not sure on the difference between the years.

Unpacked the car.. interior seems all there. Wiring is an absolute fucking mess. Might need to wait til I have some more space (and patience) before I tackle that mammoth task. Looks as though the previous owner has cut a fair few of the connectors, and attempted to rewire it. I’m no expert but it looks a bit dodgy.
Any auto sparkles on here? Might be easier for me to get someone to take a look at it.

Just time and what looks like a fair bit of wiring.. someone seems to have deliberately cut the wires but I could be wrong.. it was on the road a couple of years ago, but the car was repossessed from the finance company.. I’m grateful it looks to be complete and has a few nice things in it.

Oh wow, what a surprise I’ve bought another car.
Not a lot of valid reasons why I bought this.. yes, I’ve always wanted an ‘83 something-or-other so I could say I own a ‘63, ‘73 and ‘83 at the same time, so I’ve managed to tick that off the bucket list albeit perhaps short lived as I’d like to sell the Mustang due to a serious lack of time for such a big project and other more life important things to concentrate on which will become apparent in time.
The other reason was it was going so cheap and I didn’t want anyone else to have it at the price it went for.. tacking on the horrendous Turners buyers fee made the deal a little less financially beneficial though. I also convinced myself this would be an investment to get on the road and sell for more than I paid for it, but we’ll see how that goes.
The car was advertised as being repossessed, had rego on hold.. the interior has been stripped right out and I’m hoping it’s all there packed in the car, but I won’t know til I get into it. I’ve noticed a few cut connectors so it looks like the loom will need some work. God I hope it won’t turn into a nightmare haha.
Here are some pics on my trailer and in the garage after waiting 3 weeks for the transport company to finally get it up here from Palmerston North.
Bit of a squeeze.. not ideal when neither of them are running.
I have a habit of cars barely fitting in spaces I think.
Discussion of anything that needs to be said..

Mine is a 1975 Firebird with what I assume is a later model front on it.. tail lights too? I wouldn’t have a clue sorry, all I know is I like it regardless of it being a bit of a mongrel. I’m looking forward to spending some time on it over the next couple of weeks and taking it for a drive.
