Do you get any road feedback with recirculating ball? Less slop with rack

Last time I drove one was about 17 yrs ago so I can't say......
I assume a rack would be better than the standard set up, but just not sure if the gains will be worth the effort you know?

  2. Hey folks,

So I have investigated the option of fitting Rack and Pinion steering to my KE25 Corolla.
With out delving uber deep into the science, I have ascertained that a AW11 MR2 rack, with KE70 brackets to mount it to the cross member, a KP starlet steering shaft and uni, and possibly some starlet outer tie rod ends.....it should work.

I'm at the point where I need to make the decision in my build to do it, or lose it and keep the standard recirculating ball set up......

Is it worth it to convert it? what will the benefits be for a road car (with 20v Blacktop 4age)......is it worth doing it? Yeah nah?

I'm doing a car for someone at the moment which has a set of wheels with bigger lips done by pine, the only issue was one side of the rim doesn't have a bead hump so he has to run tubes.

The side that doesn't have a hump, is an original one though, not on the barrel supplied by them.

Might just be an arse covering exercise, like heaps of other parts manufacturers that say something is "for race use only"

Thanks for the advice mate, I can proceed with the plans :)

  4. Hey Guys - sorry for the Noob question but I've read and seen a lot about people widening wheels.

I'd like to buy an old set of SSR MESH to sit on my ke25 build while its at the panel shop, and have lined up a set that need reconditioned...and I may want to widen them when they get reconditioned depending on how the car sits after the panel work etc. I saw on PINE engineering that their barrels etc are only for race use........what's the rule around this?

Custom made tugboat for the kids and to act as a 'safety' boat for the worlds largest fleet of Hartley's. It's inspired another blue one to be built and from the interest there could easily be a few more chugging around in Kawhia harbour

  6. last year an old barry drove his lawnmower into a power transformer and shorted out the street......right when I was doing a computer backup.
I replaced my spa pool control board and the munted portable hard drive and wrote off the loss. A bit later I had to do a system restore from a backup to clean it up a bit (after watching a dodgy All Blacks live stream), but I had lost my recent ones with crashed hard drive so used an older one, thought nothing of it and moved on.........until I went to re-assemble my freshly blasted/painted/plated TE27 pedal box etc on the weekend.

All my "dismantling" pics were lost in the process, my caliper ones were in there too......Bugger!!

So I've put it all together the best I can remember. There may be a few washer or spacers out of order but meh we'll get there.

I need to replace a couple of rubber stoppers/grommets that sit in the pedal and cushion them when inactive......all 4 of mine were worn and split, and I need the boot that sits over where the accelerator bracket meets the cable through the firewall.....anyone know where I can get something similar from?

Is it possible when dealing with window companies to ask for a certain brand of window? Which are good brands to look out for?

You can request genuine - it's down to your insurance company if they agree to pay for it though.
I never had anyone ask me for a specific brand apart from OEM - you can always try I guess, though saying that, sometimes there is only 1 or 2 options available and you have to take what you can.

As for other brands, I have found FY (korea - they supply direct to Audi and VW) and Australian Autoglass are the better of the aftermarket brands I have used. XYG (China) is the most common and is ok in general but rarely the odd batch or car type can have issues. Avoid Moran if you can - they are always a little thinner and sometimes undersized (mm) which can leave gaps between moulding and aperture if not anticipated and countered with a wider trim or similar fix.

Going to have a go at installing a windscreen in the wagon on Sunday.

    Q for the pro's @AALAWS @RB30VB

I can only get a seal in a length, not molded. Should the ends be glued with anything or just a bit of windscreen sealer.

Where's the best place for the join? I was going to go for off-centre at the top (as there is a joining piece in the centre of the trim so it's not as well locked in by the (wide) SS trim there.

For the back glass I've had some new pieces cut from laminated glass. This is a bit thicker than the toughened glass that was there. The seals are new, do you think they'll work out OK?

Yup as said above - Superglue on the joins is the go......you can get the join looking seamless with some accurate guts and glueing.
As long as the thicker glass still sits nicely in the rubber without it spreading the channel you should be all good.

  10. yo - if it's just the top layer of resin - the 'pit fill' - you can have that applied again and smoothed over.
It'll tidy it up a little, but it just depends on how dirty the pit has become.

If it's the main chip opening up again the only way to fix it is to replace it.
BTW - not all the aftermarket screens are crap - it depends on which brand you get.

  11. Thanks to the guys with the offers for help!

I gave the calipers another clear coat and they are finally coming right - will give them a bake soon too.
When I bought the Dupli Color paint, I didn't want silver, but a darker grey, so I got a high heat paint with the dark grey top, not caliper paint. But they still came out more silver like........went to get another can for the rears and discovered they have recently changed the colour of the lid to a light grey for the same paint because they knew it was a misrepresentation - thanks dicks!

Anyway.....teaser pic of very cool things to come........Recaro seat custom skinned ala TE27

    I don't see any R30s there.  There's definitely an R31 though but it's not a GTS-R or X so I doubt Ed would give a fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck about it.  I know I don't.

    who said R30??

  13. Lada for Euron8,  a few mitsi's for .........well quite a few guys, a few Shuttles for Chris R, R31 and Lasers for Ed, looks like an orange Chevette for Yoeddynz, theres a 1st gen blue civic hatch, ke70 wag for every Toyota fanboy ever,  a bunch of commies and bluebirds....and what looks like a silver Cefiro?

Personally, I'd like one of the last of the pop up headlight preludes with facelift clear taillights, or the oldlegacy wagon - if GT.......my shameful foams

  14. Liking the resto goal:  "Thing is I want this to stand out from the rest of the RFB crowd and dis-associate as much as I can"

My old lady had 2 of these when they first came on the scene and when i was learning to drive - super nice cars.
I was a happy boy when I was allowed it for the night!
