  1. (Quotes not working)

5Th wheel trailers are easier because the axle is close to the rear

Long trailers have massive tail swings that tend to take out parked cars and gate posts, and drag their ass through driveways

A trailer with a turntable at the front and 2 or 3 axles might be better

I have worked on many trailers over 3500kg that aren't truck trailers (caravans, horse boxes), and I would suggest for the love of mike don't do it!

All trailers over 3500kg HAVE to have brakes on all axles in DIRECT control from the towing vehicle (damn nz rules).

There are two types of direct control units available in the world,

One uses pressure sensors teed off the towing vehicle master cylinder to a control unit which sends 3-12 volt to the trailer, for electromagnet brakes, or electric over hydraulic actuator on trailer (around $1500 for the actuator alone) all parts are made by different manufacturers and only work with each other

The other uses a pressure sensor bolted to the brake pedal to a control unit which sends 1-4 volt control voltage and 12v constant voltage to electric over air over hydraulic actuator on trailer (around the same price) these are also made by different manufacturers and only work with each other

Both these setups HAVE to be tested on brake rollers every 6 months at COF and need to get at least 50% efficiency on all axles, 50% of axles need mechanical park brake which needs to get 40% efficiency

Sounds easy? its near on impossible to get these numbers, its sheer luck!

I currently have a customers 10.5 metre caravan in the shop that the bill is more than $10,000 getting the brakes to pass (I got 51% whew) this price also includes certification to "marry" the two vehicles together so no other vehicle can tow the trailer due to the mechanical handbrake can not be applied from the drivers seat (see how stupid the rules are!)

Edit: Drawbar on trailer will also need LT400 certification

Drawbeam on tow vehicle will also need LT400 certification

    Keep it under 3500kg GVM!!!

  2. OKay the rad is part fo the problem, the outlet is in the wrong place, and someone has bodgied the top hose. Here is a pic of my old RS2000, and shows what the top hose should look like.

It is possible your engine is mounted too far forward, or has the wrong rad fan. The engine does fit in there, but its tight!

How do you figure its in the wrong place? looks the same as your van authough rad is different...?

as far as I can see the rad is the same space from the fan as yours, that's why im thinking the 2.0 rad is thicker?

  3. Yeah

What he says! :) Can't believe he didn't box the crossmember! The rad can definitely sit a little closer to the front too and its a 1300 one. Hows the quality of the sump conversion, cut and shut? Or alloy one?

And it got cert with that crossmember, and wofs

    Cut n shut, avg quality

I thought it might be 1300 one, are the 2.0 rads deeper/3 core?

Don't mean to be pedantic, but it would have been built in Lower Hutt. They only built Mk2 sedans in Auckland.

I was going off Wikipedia lol

As for the gearbox/diff angle issues, i found this, which may or may not be of some use: http://rsmotorsport.com.au/files/Type9toMk2.pdf

And while the front brakes are getting bigger, why not throw some 4 pot calipers off a Princess in? (although admittedly they could be a bit hard to find now)

good read, I mean the diff is literally below horizontal, should be parallel to gearbox centreline.

Probably just stick with the m16's, maybe vented depending on price at the time

  5. Yeah I tried googling to find pics on mounting rad for a pinto but couldn't find much

     So thanks BD!

The rad is tilted slightly back the same angle as the engine, but that's because its on factory mounts

Rad mounted inside mounts (towards grill) and shroud on outside(towards engine)

Still have to get wire and gas for the mig

Best place to get panel steel in CHCH?

    gfcblpmp.5sn.jpg

    Notice the alternator top bracket?

and the pulleys don't line up

I don't mean it to sound like im whinging about faults, think of it as a mental note for future fixing

  6. Took radiator out today to see what was going on with the mounts

Half the front crossmember is missing, will need to be boxed

    qe1jvyux.yfq.jpg

Also spot the quality of coolant :thumbleft:

    Jobs to add to list:

    Gas and wire for mig

    get Panel steel

    get some damn antifreeze

Looks like the engine and box will be coming out some time too, good chance to paint the bay while im at it

    Are Escort radiators 2 core?

And are Cortina radiators 2 or 3 core?

This one has auto cooler tubes in it so suspicions are raised...

3 months till I can start spending coin

  7. Looks Mint!

Think they look better without side windows anyways
Just remember it gets pretty dark in the back without

Could you get a photo of where/how the radiator is mounted coz mine is so close to the engine the top hose rubs on the cam cover

Edit: and you got extractors! :-(

  8. Winch bumper I built for the Samurai

    2f51oyi2.gtq.jpg

Used old computer chair to get winch in good position then took measurements around it

    1lafa4jt.30a.jpg

    cziquxpe.25d.jpg

    4mm centre and 3mm sides

    onv1sddz.rje.jpg

Bent the 4mm top plate around the hook from an over-eager pull, so built uprights and pipes only for

the purpose of exterior gussets as interior gussets were impossible due to the winch

    jh1wgpqf.x1w.jpg

    o0ncuxa1.evd.jpg

    ji0tryv0.sts.jpg

Test of the bumper, the front corner is all that's holding it up

  9. Did you get the white (I think it was white) one from TM with back seat?

Im not too worried about the guards as the swage lines are right, I think only the edge surrounding the headlights are different, and that doesn't worry me because im keeping the twin lights so the grill wont fit anyway

Some muppet has cut the two slots out of the front under the grill, and left a gaping rectangular hole ffs

I just think those wheels wont suit the style (think modded Holden Sandman-ish)

Its a Cortina 2.0L, I don't know what Cortina (think it might have Cortina loom as fuse box is passenger footwell not under bonnet.

    And type9 5 speed

My first old Ford so I don't know what 2.0 (its not 205)

Van was originally 1100/1300 auto (prev owner said it was 1200??)

NZ new built in auck woop

Edit: posted pic of the hole in build thread

  10. The rear bumpers are 1/4s with reverse lights in them like the front indicators, look

good, the front has been cut in to 1/4s, doesn't look right

RS wheels are a bit too contemporary I think

Being a van like this in the 70s style its more forgiving to go ridiculous

like Slots maybe, more like hotwires, turbos or maybe 1000 spokes with knock offs? lol

I also think the van body has nice rounded mk1 lines with a mk2 front grafted to it, would like to put a mk1 bonnet on it and modify/change the slam panel to suit

    Maybe a capri long bulge?

Theres a few other ideas but ill keep them for later

Cant wait to get back from holiday and get started

Lol how many ppl say they cant wait to get back?

  11. at a guess those are discs from a Mk1, which had 12 inch wheels. Find a pair of Mk2 discs, which you should get for next to nothing (or buy a new pair, which will work better) and that will sort the disc issue. (all Mk2 discs are the same) Can you ditch the spacers, or is wheel clearance a problem?  Nice that yours is a proper panel van, with no side windows.

I just bought one yesterday (with side windows) also with 2.0 and 5 speed:) Will go pick it up when it stop raining!!

    Conrad

    Hi Conrad

This is a mk2 van so I wonder how mk1 discs ended up on it?

There is small rub marks on the struts from the tyres (maybe pre-spacer) and there isn't much space.

I think the rims need more offset anyway coz it doesn't look quite right even with the spacers.

Havent decided whether to keep the green Modgies, chrome them, or go for something else.

Anyway that's in the future and I wont have any money until after the USA trip

    Nice on the van acquiring!

    Cheers

    Richard

  12. Yeah it is. Lumpy cam or the carb needs a good clean. Type 9 box which hits the tunnel at the back of theshift tube, diff points downward wtf? ??tiny front rotors that don't fit the calipers properly

I plan to get the running gear sorted out first before starting on the interior.

Asked the wife for her input, she suggested I push it off a cliff

It could be worse she could have told me to drive it off lol

Did you go and look at it?

  13. So it came with blue neons and LED strip underneath, that was the first to go

And I removed the grill when I got a chance

Figured out the headlights are Gen1 Accord, they fit pretty good on the slam but stick out the front a bit

and the old buckets have been removed and covered over.

So ill be looking for some Accord headlight surrounds in the future, and fit the ford grill between them.

Pulled the front wheel off last night as I had some spare time to fuck around

The wheel bearing was loose and rough (I don't know how it got its last WOF coz ive found a few other things it should have failed on) and I found this

    czhfl0ts.zkh.jpg

    uulfuvaw.vfy.jpg

Sooo what/where are these discs from?

    gjubo14i.13x.jpg

Only about two thirds of the pad are on the disc, so at some point when the pads wear

down the pads would touch and have no brakes...

    xkve52sk.th2.jpg

I also found theres wheel spacers behind the front wheels, but the wheel spacers are

just loose and I think its putting off the balance coz they are not centred.

Because of the spacers the studs barely poke out thru the rims aaah

    g4o2p2hk.cbq.jpg

Maybe I should be posting in failed mods lol

I relocated the aerial as it looked silly

    Hey OS

This is probably going to be a long slow process but ill try post when I can

Because we're going to the US later in the year I don't have any moneys to spend on it yet, so im doing what I can for free

Bought this van about a month ago

Most of the hard work has been done, the panel work is pretty good but the wiring and running gear is not good

There's a couple small bubbles of rust, 1 in the r/h door front corner, and one on the corner of the bonnet.

I haven't found anywhere else...... yet

Heres some starting photos, I borrowed these from the old owner as they are better than dim lit garage pics.

Someones modified the dash and made it a 5 dial

    3sq23nnt.ri5.jpg

    And this isn't original right?
