Mof
Ok so let me know your thoughts //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/43864-mofs-1979-escort-panel-van/#entry1335745
J-W-G
Solid base man. Brake wise nothing wrong there, just old pads and worn disks. Id go with a M16 caliper spacer kit followed with capri 2.8i vented disks
Shakotom
Think what he means is rotors too smaller diameter for calliper/pads I like panel vans
The Dude
Awesome Van, I really thought about buying it myself, looked like a really good deal. 2.0 pinto too if I remember correctly.
Mof
Yeah it is. Lumpy cam or the carb needs a good clean. Type 9 box which hits the tunnel at the back of theshift tube, diff points downward wtf? ??tiny front rotors that don't fit the calipers properly I plan to get the running gear sorted out first before starting on the interior. Asked the wife for her input, she suggested I push it off a cliff It could be worse she could have told me to drive it off lol Did you go and look at it?
The Dude
Lol, No I was going to buy it blind and drive it back to Auckland, I'm quite glad I didn't. I figured there had been so much work done, it had probably been done to a fairly good standard, and it seemed a bit cheap! I'm guessing your prop is too long, the 5 speed box is a bit longer than the old 4 speed!
browndog
at a guess those are discs from a Mk1, which had 12 inch wheels. Find a pair of Mk2 discs, which you should get for next to nothing (or buy a new pair, which will work better) and that will sort the disc issue. (all Mk2 discs are the same) Can you ditch the spacers, or is wheel clearance a problem? Nice that yours is a proper panel van, with no side windows. I just bought one yesterday (with side windows) also with 2.0 and 5 speed:) Will go pick it up when it stop raining!! Conrad

There is small rub marks on the struts from the tyres (maybe pre-spacer) and there isn't much space. I think the rims need more offset anyway coz it doesn't look quite right even with the spacers. Havent decided whether to keep the green Modgies, chrome them, or go for something else. Anyway that's in the future and I wont have any money until after the USA trip Nice on the van acquiring! Cheers Richard

Cheers Richard ditch the Modgies, and put some proper old school wheels on it Would cost a fortune to change offset and rechrome them. Would look good with a set of 7x13 RS replica wheels, which are cheapish anyway
The Dude
Oh yeah I totally agree there, nice set of RS wheels or slotmags, quarter bumpers and four big cibies on the front, old school rally look!!!
Mof
The rear bumpers are 1/4s with reverse lights in them like the front indicators, look good, the front has been cut in to 1/4s, doesn't look right RS wheels are a bit too contemporary I think Being a van like this in the 70s style its more forgiving to go ridiculous like Slots maybe, more like hotwires, turbos or maybe 1000 spokes with knock offs? lol I also think the van body has nice rounded mk1 lines with a mk2 front grafted to it, would like to put a mk1 bonnet on it and modify/change the slam panel to suit Maybe a capri long bulge? Theres a few other ideas but ill keep them for later Cant wait to get back from holiday and get started Lol how many ppl say they cant wait to get back? browndog
yep, especially when there is a fresh project waiting!! Went and picked mine up today, and drove it around this afternoon - loving it too! You are right about it being a Mk1 with a Mk2 front grafted on, and I don't think it would be too difficult to convert into a Mk1. Front guards, bonnet and front panel would just about nail it I think. The RS 4 spoke wheels were from the right era, first seen on Mk1 RS1600's, RS2000's and RS3100 Capri's in the early 1970's. But getting a bit "common" now that those MWS (?) replica wheels are everywhere. What engine/box does your van have?
Mof
Did you get the white (I think it was white) one from TM with back seat? Im not too worried about the guards as the swage lines are right, I think only the edge surrounding the headlights are different, and that doesn't worry me because im keeping the twin lights so the grill wont fit anyway Some muppet has cut the two slots out of the front under the grill, and left a gaping rectangular hole ffs I just think those wheels wont suit the style (think modded Holden Sandman-ish) Its a Cortina 2.0L, I don't know what Cortina (think it might have Cortina loom as fuse box is passenger footwell not under bonnet. And type9 5 speed My first old Ford so I don't know what 2.0 (its not 205) Van was originally 1100/1300 auto (prev owner said it was 1200??) browndog
here is what your brake discs SHOULD look like
mk2marty
NZ new built in auck woop Don't mean to be pedantic, but it would have been built in Lower Hutt. They only built Mk2 sedans in Auckland. As for the gearbox/diff angle issues, i found this, which may or may not be of some use: http://rsmotorsport.com.au/files/Type9toMk2.pdf And while the front brakes are getting bigger, why not throw some 4 pot calipers off a Princess in? (although admittedly they could be a bit hard to find now) And I kinda like Garfield and Odie on the side, probably cos i had a lot of Garfield videotapes when i was a kid
The Dude
Hmm have you thought it might be an 1100??? rare but there were some around?
browndog
In one of your pics, looking through the front of the grille, it looks like the rad is tilted back towards the top of the engine?????? It should be bolted flat to that front panel, not tilting backwards. Bottom crossmember should be cut out (like yours is) but boxed in with sheetmetal.
