So this new toy started with my brother saying
"oh bro some dude from work is selling his kp starlet as he is going Aus and needs it gone"
Well i don't really need another toy but ive always had a thing for old kps so yeah ill have a look at it
so i left it with him to organize a time to view it
month goes by....
"bro you still wanna look at the kp"
yeah i told you organize a time and ill go see it
about another 2 weeks go by then he asks me again
"yeah bro organize it for tuesday"
Tuesday night comes its about 7pm and dark so i come prepared with a torch and as soon as i saw it i wanted it so the owner gives it a tow start as its got a dead battery and hasn't been running for 4 months so i go for a ride with him then go for a drive and yeah "goes hunnitz for wat it is bro" so had a look around found rust and bits that needed fixing so we agreed on a price and had to pick it up the next night as the owner was leaving for Aus on Friday morning so 10pm Wednesday night comes i come with a battery and some tools so i let the old owner start it as he said its a bit of a c**t to start takes him about 10 minutes to start which came apparent a couple days after owning it that the choke wasn't hooked up so money exchange hands drive it home to neighboring suburb papatoetoe to mangere East with no wof or rego with even a couple of laps round the block for my mate to drive.
So specs are
4K 1.3 litre single cam engine with flat top pistons, balanced crank, lumpy cam unsure on spec, lighten flywheel, twin 40mm dellorto's
and high compression old owner got the motor out of a crashed rally car.retrimed interior by the old owners mates mum
painted yellow about 8 years ago
lowered on shorten shocks and dobi springs
with enkei j speed wheels with mint tread.

Thought i would update this project thread abit.
is about 18 months ago now that it got painted on the road etc
At that time i was still currently in high school with no job but had holiday jobs etc so i pissed around getting quotes etc and ended up with 5 grand and 6 grand quote figures and was way out of my budget and then i thought why not just do it myself with some assistant from a painter/panelbeater who had done his trade 50 odd years ago
so it started with just a basic respray but quickly got out of hand
At this point it seem like we had been sanding for years as we had been using wet and dry the whole time
but once i had done a full strip down except the bonnet it appeared it had some minor rust in different
places than my mates one so we did a few rust repairs on the roof the doors on the bottoms behind the blackplastic covers etc
unfortunately i didnt get any photos while it was in primer but on arrival after work i found it was
painted cheers to my old man in a big workshop with wet floors roller doors up with big extractor fan
by roller door etc we ended up getting a mint finish when applying the paint but when it came to
applying the clear coat my old man hadn't sprayed clear in 20 odd years we had ended up with the wrong
lighting while applying and lack of experience it ended with sand and dust in the clear and runs in the
clear.but i was amazed at the final product and others said aswell of the job done in a dirty old high
stud workshop off the gun finish.
then went and got my dashed recovered and painted because it was cracked and falling to pieces
cheers to dashboard restorations out west for the mint job
after about 3 or 4 months of assembly it ended up like this
with a clean sheet wof also!

You could just buy a rebuild kit for the current carb but I'm not sure weather they come with new springs or not.
-
I've pulled a lead out and plug and earthed etc and no spark and also no spark jump from coil or any leads etc
-
Uh the negative of the coil needs to goto your points.
Cheers mate will give that a go lol
-
Hey guys a couple of days ago I tried to start my 4k and as I was cranking it over I realised that I had removed the distrubtor rotor so I put that back in and still no go.
And it was going sweet prior to this
So as it is it has no spark
Still has a points ignition
Have tested the coil and found it had shorted itself
Placed another coil in and wired one to the positive feed and earthed the other to the engine
And I'm still not getting any spark
Have checked all the fuses
As it is water is leaking onto the relays
Still need to test them
Does anyone had any simlair issues
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
-
I know that the injectors have already been tested but I've had a case at work were it wasn't untill they were had been tested on the 4th go that they actually found a fault with them.
Sometimes a second test will find things that hadn't been found before.

You could possibly ring some Nissan wreckers and get a second hand one then fit it urself would save yourself a lot of coin
And there usually not that hard to fit drill some holes and bolt it up etc

Keen to see how that intake manifold turns out in the alkaline bath
-
Keen on the sheds tours
I don't have a shed at all to show off though
-
Apparently the VHT clear coat works well.
Guy at work done his rotary housings in that stuff said it worked great.
-
Are you planning on coating your manifold in anything as now it is an exposed metal?
-
Clean the EGR valve and Air flow meter and the throttle body
And is it only when it's cold or?
Perhaps load up the engine when it's cold and hot by holding handbrake up and trying to take off at 2000rpm
As could possibly be coil packs as they fail quite often.
-
Cause of this fault is either the gearbox is too full of fluid and when the oil is cold it's thicker and can't freely flow through the gears which could be causing hydraulicing in the gearbox until when it's warm as the fluid becomes thinner.
Otherwise it could just be it has the wrong fluid too thick when cold etc
I would give 75w-90 a try as its a little bit thinner when cold and that's what is causing you problems.
Or possibly the gear oil in it is dirty and f@cked.

Oh and a bit of advice go to a wrecker that only stocks Japanese vehicles as European vehicles have 13mm 15mm and 18mm etc
-
Come into auto super shoppes Mayne in onehunga Cnr selwyn and princess st that's where I work.
I think from memory it's about 10 or 15 dollars per wheel but don't trust me on this.
We are open tomorrow 8am to 4pm and Sunday 8am to 4pm but I'm only on tomorrow.
If you pop in just ask for Dylan (me) and will do them if not busy.

All seals over time get hard and brittle and tend to fall apart when getting pulled out and plus having thin oil makes it worse so personally as much of a mission it is just to do a seal I would just pull the gearbox out and take the seal down to your local seal shop or go to seal imports in Christchurch or Dunedin otherwise your just going to have get the kit from the uk.
-
I would recommend the engine be stripped down and checked for surface rust and debris and clean in the bores and oiled up otherwise could cause oil ring to seize due to rust/debris getting stuck in it on startup.
-
Where are you located could come and reset it after work sometime with the scanner
-
Is this the same corona that is currently at terror Morris radiators?
-
right I'm wanting to make my intake manifold look abit more cleaner as it looks aged.
It's made of aliminium and I thought about giving it a polish up but the surface is rough so would require grinding down to smooth it out then polishing but that would require to much work.
Also can you get Ali power coated or zinc coated or cleaned.
If so what would be a good colour to do it in.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Pic below to show what it looks like

Hmm yeah nah I think it would bit of a insult to put a chev motor into a japanese car and plus I'm currently doing a top end rebuild on the piazza.
But cheers for that info if I ever go down that track

Yup sounds like it's your alternator

So i took this vehicle into my work to get a Wof knowing full well it was going to fail as the exhaust was holding by a bit of wire tie that i had put on to stop the exhaust falling off And plus the old owner told me he always had got dodgy Wof's done on it.
so went into work and they were to busy to do it now so went and gave it a wash inside and out but had to do outside twice as it had been sitting outside for awhile and had gathered moss etc
couple hours later got a inspection and ended up with this
bit of a list but i told him where the rust was and other things that weren't up to wof standard.
couple pic's that i took in the workshop
