Popular Post Nominal
Old and new The Rancho units were a bit longer so I had to dick around with the upper mounts a bit. Got them installed over a lazy weekend. I've done some test driving, adjusted between 5 and 9 (min is 1 and max is 9). Definitely feels better tied down, currently set on 7 which may be a bit too stiff. Made it down an almost 4wd spec track to a quiet section of Te Horo beach during the week. 21

Popular Post Nominal
WOF time recently and needed to replace from tires (wheel alignment damage) and get the rear exhaust fixed (I did a hack job on it as part of the airbag thing). I left the car at Jensen & Moore in Levin for a couple of days for Tony to do his thing. No holes now. The brakes were sketchy when driving home from Levin so had a look at those today, and found a distinct lack of brake fluid in the reservoir for the front brakes. I suppose the Corolla reservoir doesn't have enough capacity for the Falcon calipers as the pads wear down, will have to pay closer attention to that. Anyway, needed a bleed session followed by a test drive.

Popular Post Nominal
This split bush has been noted on the last couple of WOF checks, thought it was time I replaced it (while the Woodie is off the lift) Yep, pretty toasted, the ones on the other 4-link bars look OK. Might smear some rubber grease around the new ones. Luckily I kept the receipt for what they are from, dang Mitsi parts!

Popular Post Nominal
Another Beach Hop back in March. Made a change to visit Thames, enjoyed the pumping engine museum barry chat there. WOF time this past weekend, been expired since April I think. Passed OK but I needed to do a little exhaust repair as the clamp/tack weld have come loose from a bash on the bellflower tip at Waiouru Shell garage on the way back. Since I had it on the lift I replaced the head unit which lives under the front seat. I put a cheap JVC one in last year but I didn't like it much and the sound was a bit shit. Went for a Pioneer unit this time. Somewhat app-controlled so easier to operate when you can't see it. Took the air tank out to drain it - no bung on the bottom sadly. There wasn't much water in there, maybe 100ml? A bit oily too from the engine driven compressor, but I guess that will supress the rust? Cleaned out the water trap/filter which is always gross. Should be all good for another year. Not sure if we will do BH 2022, the price for the house we've rented for the last 3-4 years went up by 50% which is a bit off-putting so we declined to sign up.
Popular Post Nominal
On a drive back from the local beach around new years the brakes weren't working too well. A bit of testing when home suggested that the booster wasn't working (big vac leak at idle) Pulled it off which wasn't too hard and had a look. Decided that stripping it was in the too hard basket so took it to a brake shop in Wellington After a couple of weeks they declined to work on it because it was a 'treadle vac' system. It isn't actually, just the standard (for the time) Midland Ross booster. It seems these are a bit different as the have atmo pressure on the M/C side which is unusual? Anyway I talked to CBC in Christchurch who said they could sort a booster rebuild for $650 (not too bad as when I looked the booster parts kit was USD250). Eventually cost just on 1k with shipping and work needed on the M/C too. Got it back in the car, the pedal clip was a pain in the ass to get reinstalled but hopefully it's in there now. Extended bleeding session followed. I hoped to get away with doing just one side but eventually needed to do all 4 wheels. The old brake fluid was a bit grot so worthwhile anyway. All working again, did a bit of driving locally over the weekend. WOF expired on Friday, and it's gone back into the storage shed down the road for now. Also lost the cap for the M/C so it's covered with glad wrap and insulation tape for now. Will have to go to PaP sometime I suppose.
Popular Post Nominal
Got this out of the chicken shed last weekend, WOF expired in March. Noticed that the accelerator pump was leaking quite a bit, seemed to be worse than it was previously, dripping on to the inlet manifold. I had a rebuild kit for a 4-barrel Autolite carb that I might install one day, instead of the 2-barrel that is on there now. It's a pretty easy piece to access so I pulled it off The replacement diaphragm in the kit has two pieces (a separate pushrod) compared to the one in the carb. I ended up using the cover from the 4-barrel as well as the shaft seal seemed to be leaking on the 2-barrel one. Also cleaned up and repainted the air cleaner lid. Don't want to get too carried away in the engine bay though. Might be a bit easier to cold start now with a better accelerator pump, it used to take heaps of pumping to get some gas down the carb when cold. Next is sorting a WOF check.
Popular Post Nominal
Post Beach Hop update (couldn't go in November 2022 sadly) At the end of January, the convertible top stopped working, luckily in the garage. It's been getting slower for the last couple of years I suppose. The hydraulic pump lives behind the back seat, unfortunately also behind the subwoofer back there. I checked with PG Hydraulics who basically said that if the wiring is OK, just get a new pump as they are not easy to get parts for. The pump is fairly common to many US cars of the era. Northwestern Ford had one in stock which seemed the best option given the weight and timeline. Old vs new. Swap over went OK except for an incident with the rubber bung popping out while cycling/bleeding the system which made a bit of mess. Also did a bit of a service - oil + filter and grease gun session underneath. Drive up/back was fine, no issues. Beach Hop itself was fun as usual The rebuilt booster has never been quite right, with an audible vacuum leak when applying the brakes. I've been igoring it as the car has mostly been stored down the road in a chicken shed for the last year. But tonight I bit the bullet and pulled the booster out again to send back to CBC for them to look at. Getting it out is fairly easy, getting it back in and connected to the brake pedal is a ballache.

Popular Post Nominal
Also some repairs in the boot floor area and seal lip And I got him to delete the aerial hole as it was broken off anyway Drove it home yesterday, barely made it to the nearest gas station but sweet after that. Missing a few bits for now. Delivered to paint shop today, but main man wasn't there. Will go discuss the plan tomorrow.
