kdotlowe
Hi all, Having issues with my alternator not charging my battery in the Escort. Was having trouble with it charging on and off.. would work sometimes, and others not. Voltmeter would rise and fall during a short trip. I thought it was because of my issues with the belt, was a little loose. Put on a new belt over the weekend, everything is nice and tight etc. but still no charge. The 'charge' light on the Escorts dash isn't on which would normally indicate it's charging, but the battery only reads 12.5V and the Voltmeter is in the red. Any suggestions of what to look at before I rip the sucker out? Cheers
two_days_late
If you've already checked all the wiring then I'd just rip it out and replace the brushes in the alternator. If i remember correctly you don't even need to solder the new ones in (they just slot in) and they are cheap as from Repco ($20 or so last time I got some but that was a few years ago). It's really easy to do, and has been the problem on two separate eskys I've had with charging issues.
kdotlowe
Oh sweet as. Will have a look into that. Alternator is pretty new (18month ish). But I have a feeling early issues I had with brackets/loose belt might have buggered the brushes? So with the rooted brushes it would still cause the dash light to indicate it charging? two_days_late
Oh right that doesn't sound very old then. In my experience, the charge light had flickered on and off. Someone else might have a better idea.
kdotlowe
Cheers dude. It's a cheap option anyway!
dominic
+1 for brushes. I recently had an issue with these exact symptoms. Vibrations from the engine loosened the mount for the brushes which then ruined both the mount and the brushes. Alternator was only 18 months too.
