tortron
Further truck updates Had this in the morrie yonks ago, now has a new home in the truck (it matches the black faces better) Not really an ideal spot to mount it. I did have my eye on the panel above the drivers seat, however the only place to put it without cutting into the metal panel, would foul on the windscreen hinges when opening. So for now its where the passenger/left hand drive wiper motor would be. Still fairly visible when in the driving position. Some room may free up around the steering column when i switch a few switches around (headlight dip can go back to the horn button, or floor mounted). Secondly Vibrations had caused the steel around the rear facing spotlamp to fail. Annoying because it makes a hell of a noise graunching around, and when it rains it drips directly ontop of my head So i patched the torn section up, then reenforced the area with a mudguard washer, im hoping it will be large enough to prevent the same happening and to prove i didnt wreck anything
tortron
got a big roll of this stuff for $1 a while ago did the roof and behind the seat (about half way down the cab, theres no floor behind the seats, so il sort that before putting the rest in) looks a bit saggy il admit, but you wont see that once i make a roofliner panel up If anything this stuff is too thick, getting the rear window trim and interior back in was a bit tight. Should make things nicer inside however
tortron
good news everyone wound out some copper tubing (shame most of its hidden, i even made spirals for vibrations) plumbed it into the vac advance line no vacuum.... I figured as much (distributor is a bodge from a landrover i believe, its spins the opposite way than usual) brass T adapter into manifold drain, plugged carb take off, and re routed vac advance. Success, and i can use this point for vac tuning the engine. Its fair close at the moment, and actually having some advance should improve my running untold amounts
tortron
Truck Updates Things i have done Installed brackets to hole up hungry boards, these will also double as attachment points should i build some loops for a rear cover Installed rear tow hook Fiddled with oil pressure gauge, so hopefully no more behind dash leaks Stuff To do Check out the carb float Install fuel catch can - i have a nice plan for this General tune up Get a WOF Other stuff i would like to do, includes recovering the interior, i found some nice textured vinyl that looks original. Still debating if its worth it Make up a cover for the rear Get the fuel gauge working properly Get the ODO working again Tidy up the paint Considering selling as im planning on travelling. Can probably manage storage space for my morrie, but a second vehicle is pushing it. Il get a wof and get back to the joy of driving an old truck and see how it goes. Long way off yet
tortron
Did some work today Sorted out loose ignition wire behind the dash Replaced float needle valve with a spare filled in, and retapped the airfilter mount ontop of the carb (had stripped) Attached my cab throttle control - possibly i want to replace the wire, its got a few kinks and so it stretches rather than adjusts fully And finally, punched a few more holes in a belt, and replaced the webbing strap i had holding in my battery as you can see, my battery tray is massive. Im considering connecting a second battery, just because i have room, and a spare
tortron
Wof today Left and right KingPins worn (these must have bugger all miles on them as the previous owner replaced them). Front right tie rod worn Steering this thing is fairly vauge, so il accept that is probably looking for an overhaul already sourced the required parts - $120 a side plus $40 for the tie rod Will go ahead and order them, its cheap enough and chances are it was flogged out on the farm before i got it
tortron
Kingpins were replaced have been painting and tinkering where possible. No real issues other than not being driven enough
tortron
old wof sheet  Remedy corrosion left b pillar -was water getting behind the lead trim on the seam at the rear cab roof.  Pulled it all out, ground it fresh, bogged it smooth  remedy fuel leaks - fuel bowl needle was worn, replaced with new  Steering box mounting bolts loose -Tighened and locktited  Both driveshaft UJ's worn -Both replaced with S1 Landrover items from the UK  Movement in draglink ends to comply with manufacturer specs - these are adjustable, i just repacked them with grease, seems within spec to me, will take the original 1940's workshop manual with me.  Movement in front wheels to comply (kingpins) - previous owner replaced these, turns out the holes were worn out, so he used a punch to get a bit more meat.  This didnt last many miles.  I had them tinned up and reamed to size for a new set of kingpins  - perishing in all tyres and engine/gearbox mounts meh not covered in the wof, they can wait. haha  Have just finished giving the cab and tray several coats of paint  will go for wof this coming weekend (last wof expired 3/2/2010, i took it in last on 21/12/11) time flys
tortron
Stone the crows  have done some work on this today.  Remedied some dodgy vibrations in the drivetrain - front driveshaft bolts had backed themselves out. Played around with the steering, adjusted the drag rod ends slightly.  Made some shims up for the steering box. Seems to have helped noticibly (only 2 inches of play in the steeringwheel, rather than the normal 5.  I doubt factory would have been much better due to the design).  Exhaust has a failed weld (and a few dents which i bet are the cause), so will tidy that up tomorrow.  Oh, and i sorted out some electrics which i forgot to hook back up a while ago. haha, and here i am cursing the dammed fuel gauge for working when it wants  Other than that exhaust, its all go for WOF this week.  Makes sense the only time its road legal during my ownership is when i sell
tortron
Took into VTNZ for a WOF today  Failed  But oh my, its the easiest WOF sheet iv ever had  Align Headlamps Dip switch to work  YYYEAAAHHHHA!  Legal commer action coming to your roads probably tomorrow if its not pissing down tonight so i can align em
tortron
Flew through its WOF really. put 3 months rego on too. only $33 for 3 months. Cruises very nicely, even passed some heavily loaded freighters going up TeRapa
tortron
Commer started wonderfully and had a nice foggy drive to the musuem. Did about 50 laps of the stalls as they opened up, its all junk i already have tho haha (minus the big bin of used pornography, im fully digital). Tho i never did find a 1/2" ROE spanner, they must be rare cos all mine have gone missing too. Went through the musuem, because it would be rude not to.  Any one know what that tiny american V8 is thats on the outside wall of the oldtime garage?  its got to be sub 2L, would be a cool engine to use in a project.  Watched all the piners giving the truck a once over before leaving with my handful of bits (another ign lamp for my morry, want to change out the glass and have matchy matchy ones, and a smiths vac gauge.  Nice sub $10 buys there) Took off in the truck.  Instantly something didnt feel right.  But kept on trucking cos whatever it wasnt bad enough to slow me down. Got to Te Rapa straight, it conked out. wiggled all the plug connections and started away again Got half way down Te Rapa straight, conked out again.  Noticed the fan bet was pretty slack (had noticed i was only getting low amps) tightened it up and away i go. Get to The base, conk out right on the turn off.  Seems like its not getting fuel. fuel filter looks a bit dirty, i remove it and use some fuel hose to bridge the gap. Starts up and as im already in the lane, i turn into the base, hoping to get to a park to give it a good look at. Get to the lights at the crossing and it dies can idle briefly but dies as soon as i try to move.  Blocking erry body. All good attitudes fortunately, start to call AA when a guy in a waikato toyota truck stops and offers to tow me outta there and to the car parks, what a GC.  Strip off the bonnet and sides. Notice one of the vac lines is split and no longer connected.  cut the damaged end off and silicone the whole lot together.  Go for a walk while it sets. Get back and it starts and runs fine.  Do 20 laps of the car park to test it out.  Goes fine.  Go off down the boulevard for further testing (that back road part going away from the base). Get another 300m and it conks out again.  Peak at the engine again trying to find a vac leak, spin the starter, and it jams. Also notice the starter solenoid is falling apart and the engine earth strap is loose.  Remove starter, find a little bit of something, probably from my clutch/gearbox who knows, sitting next to the flywheel.  Rebuild the starter with spare nuts and bolts. chuck it back in and tighten the earth strap.  Test the flow from the fuel pump, seems kinda low. Nother test drive, get about 1km before it stops, am certain its the fuel pump now. pull a plug, dry open the fuel bowl, dry Pull the pump out take the lid off Its literally packed to the top with shit.  Theres a mesh screen that sits over the top there and it was full to that. pick all that shit out and clean everything probably 30 years of shit from the tank, the fuel filter is at totally the wrong end. put it all back together Cool runnings all around hamilton from then on  need to cut the line from the tank and install a disposable filter there (a glass bowl one may be nice too), also will take note that i need to flush and reseal the tank at some point. 4 hours after leaving the swapmeet...  I aint even mad, was a lovely day to work on a car, nothing serious (tho that little bit is concerning, im sure i can hear the throwout bearing now, maybe im imagining it.  will look at the parts manual and see if anything matches up, actually im sure there was an identical bit found in the same place by a previous owner.)  Vintage life
tortron
Just doing some maintenance on this. Look in the gearbox, oil looks a bit low but ok, drain it out and will replace.  Nope its half water, it looks like the top cover was slighly loose and water has run down into it somehow. No bad noises or anything i could see wrong (probably happened within the last month, screen has been leaking from the last time i opened it) Topped it back up with some premium EP oil and i think we are ok. must have been that noise i heard, cant imagine the bearings liked it.  Went to attend to the throw out bearing lubricator (copper pipe and flex hose with a grease nipple going down to the clutch)  The P.O. mentioned it was broken and needed replacing (the lubricator) but it looked fine to me, gave it a few squirts of grease a couple of years ago (havnt done many miles since). Funny, i recall its clutch started slipping a bit back then, but eventually came right.  gave the flex line a tug and it has snapped off inside the bell housing, so basically last time i was applying grease directly to my clutch. HaHa oh man i love old cars. Will have to be a gearbox and bell housing out job to attend to that, and its bloody heavy.  So for now im gona try jam a grease nozzle into the bit of hose thats left.  Want to go on a "weekend" away with this tomorrow.  Will bring camping gear and a gas cooker + thermos of tea and hope for the best  (also im taking a full tool kit like i always do, several Litres of oil, spare fuel, jerry can of water, and a spare carb, fuel pump, distributor parts and various nuts and bolts.  Its pretty much a rolling workshop)  Keep on trundling  Edit: Im also not concerned about that little bit i found sitting by the starter, chances are it slipped down between the floor panels and went in the huge inspection window in the bell housing, i can fit my hand in there!
tortron
So i took the old girl for a drive from Hamilton, to Matamata, to Tauranga.  Stayed the night, then took the back roads to Te Puke, to Whakatane, to Taneatua, and to Opotiki  Had no issues, and it ran really well.  Kept it cruising at 30-35mph, got down to 10mph in 2nd up the kaimais, but it didnt even heat up.  Found two steep bits on old creamery road heading into opotiki, which had me in 1st, but she just keeps chugging. Think i used a tank of gas, approx $90 worth and just a splash of oil. Had the back loaded up with all the spares as i was delivering it to its new owner - my Dad, who plans on using it to drive into town to get groceries and to take up the back blocks on his possum line. Perfect town for it to be in really, lots of quiet country roads, no traffic lights, and little traffic    Here is a link to the album http://s136.photobucket.com/user/tortrontortron/library/superpoise%20delivery
