finishing my 5 speed conversion

hey. so got the motor and after a bit of cutting and smashing got my 5speed up it now my nxt issue is the drive shaft. so far ive got a cortina front and escort rear bolted together in order to get the right in put end and close to length. any 1 who has had a play with these dunger old driveshafts know about the rubber donut/spacer/vibration stop /weak point. i need to shorten the whole thing by an inch so if i get rid of the donut thing, trim it a bit and bolt it bk 2 gether minus the rubber will it handle the jandle?
