Pick this little turd up last year as a non-runner detined to be my daily. Havn't done a hell of a lot to it so far but as soon as I'm done with my L200, it's balls out to get it on the road.

So far all I've done is got the 1500 running (new plugs, leads, coil, points, fuel pump & rebuilt the carb) and made new door cards.

Roadtrip home after pickingh it up...

She's sitting at nose bleed height right now so lowering is going to be the first priority! Going for a 4" narrowed beam up front and 2 splines out the back.

The original plan was to paint it something like this

58rag.jpg

But I scored an OG black deck lid for it at Kumeu this year and as she's an OG black car, I'm going to try and take the paint back to original.

I think I'll just putt round with the 1500 in it for now but one day might go for a nice 2332 with twin 48"s and a rancho trans 8)

So much for balls out on this one  We've got an Oval in at work atm which lit a small fire under my ass, so blew the dust off the ragtop this weekend and finally got a little work done

Had this 'U-boat' shifter lock sitting around for awhile now. Pretty sure it's a repro version, but I still rekon it's a cool accessory.

Lock installed

Started work on the hoodliner.

Before:

Take one $1 TardMe special bamboo blind

IMG_1650.jpg

cut it up to fuck, and viola, one (partial) headliner

IMG_1651.jpg

Still needs work. I need to tie all the slats together to stop them bunching up. Also need to figure a way to attach short lengths to the sides of the ragtop clip.

Also finally got some more upholstery card so can get the last drivers door card done. Only got asfar as marking out the new card

No huge update. Been slamming the credit card with orders to the states, starter motor, door/window rubbers, a few accessories, dropped spindles etc. Finally found some mechanicals for the ragtop which are on their way aswell. As soon as all that shit arrives, the old girl should start moving along abit quicker.

Just pulled the trigger and ordered a plate for it also...

Motherfuckers are EXPENSIVE!

With the VW nats looming, I figured I'd better pull my finger out and get some work done! Hope to have paint done by the time I go back to work next week.

Start of the week...

Add some polish and now it's a shiny, beat up old decklid!

Ran out of paint so havn't got the guards done, but they're ready to go next time I get on it which now won't be 'till after I get back from Kumeu next weekend

Once they're done, a bit of faux-tina work and a polish over everything and I can start piecing it back together.

Got back from Kumeu just after 2 this arvo, so threw my bags on the floor and drove out to the workshop to spray the fenders

Picked up this nicely patina'd fog light at the swapmeet for a good price!

Also scored a cool old visor, but unfortunatly it's too big :(

Got a couple more hours in today. Went to One Love festival yesterday and got wayyy to drunk/burnt in the sun so wasn't feeling all that motivated today.

Dummied up the ragtop to make sure all the new mechs fit and work properly.

Got the mighty 1500 running again this weekend. Put in the new starter motor, only to find the ignition switch was bung. Probably didn't even need the new starter, but at least I won't have to worry about it for a while.

Got the door latches polished and started on the sunroof rails aswell.

Before

Latches all polished

Got a couple of days off this week, so made hay while the sun shines...even though it was pissing down. :x

Finally finished the colour sanding/buffing, then go the ragtop sorted out.

Got tail lights done today.

Because this car originally only had 6v semiphones (b-pillar mounted pop-out indicators), I want to have some decent turn signals, 'coz I can just see some douche running up my ass while watching the pretty orange light magically appear

I will eventually get the sem's working with a resistor or something, but for now will run turn signals in the lights as per US spec. Also, because the light lenses are so small and not overly bright, I wanted to beef up the bulbs to some super bright LED's.

I found these '38/39 Ford LED tail lights that has an LED cluster that will fit in the VW bezel. You can see the difference in brightness.

DSC03330.jpg

DSC03332.jpg

So pulled everything apart, hacked up the VW bezels, then sealed them up with some urethane.

DSC03333.jpg

DSC03343.jpg

And viola, nice bright LED 'snowflake' tail lights 8)

Picked up a parts beam last weekend so I have all the bits I need to completely assemble the narrowed beam. Got it stripped down and cleaned up all the small parts on the wire wheel. Will drop the drums and backing plates along with the trailing arms off at the sand blasters tomorrow to get cleaned up them powder coated.

Yesterday got the passenger door windows installed with all new rubbers. For a simple car, these are a bitch to do!

Bit of bad news, I found out my drivers door is shot. The 1/4 wing channel is rusted worse than I thought and actually separeted from the main skin so the rubber won't seat in it properly  Hopefully I can get a new door in time, if not I'll just try and re-use the old rubber with some urethane.

DSC03409.jpg

DSC03411.jpg

And got my aeriel installed 8)

DSC03407.jpg

Got the glazier booked in tomorrow to put the rest of the glass in. I gave the back window a shot, but got to the stage where I had to give up before I smashed it out of frustration :x

Interesting day with the glazier...a lot of cursing was involved from us both!

The new side window rubbers were slightly different to the old ones so getting the chrome trim in was a pain in the ass! The back window went in sweet, but went to do the front screen, only to find the NOS trim I brought a few years back is a pair of left trims, not a left and a right  This car is fighting me every step of the way! :x

I did manage to salvage the old drivers side 1/4 wing rubber enough to get it installed and somewhat weather-proof. I'll still need to get another door, but at least it'll get me by for now.

Just finished the headliner. I started off with some upholstery card, put down a thin layer of dacron padding followed by some black fabric, then pulled apart an old bamboo blind, punched the holes and tied the bamboo down.

DSC03347.jpg

IMG_1650.jpg

After about 7 hours

DSC03420.jpg

Then after 16 hours (over the last 4 nights), 600 holes, multiple stabbed fingers and a few splinters, this biarch is done.

DSC03423.jpg

DSC03425.jpg

Will get some installed pics tomorrow.

I'm making a custom glovebox to hide the head unit. Started with a stock glovebox and a wooden buck and pull some fiberglass molds from them to make the buck for the finished product.

I've since done the last gel coat, just need to sand it smooth and polish the molds ready to lay them up.
