hachiroku_GTV Posted May 22, 2008 Share Posted May 22, 2008 The story begins about 5 Years ago. Every morning I would drive past this "amazing" car. A red 84 Trueno. At this time I only knew the AE86 from when my cousin had one years ago. So id drive past this car going to and from work and sometimes go back to check it out late in the night. After 3 or 4 months of doing this and telling my wife about how cool it was she went down there and bought it for me. $500 what a bargain! So I go down there to pick it up (in daylight) and straight away I can see that I had built this car up in my head. ALOT! So I could see the paint was bad, it has a little bit of rust, an 80's sunroof, its an automatic and also no 4age. WTF. Too late now so ill just take it and drive it. It'll be sweet. So I start using it as my daily driver. It rolls around alot and spins out pretty easy which was pretty fun but it was winter and of course raining so all of a sudden im seeing water bubbling through the back seat and soon I have a water feature with fountain in the back of my car. I pulled the seat out and found big holes where the rear belts used to bolt to. Fist size. When I started stripping the car out I found more rust in the boot, in the rear pockets and wheel arches. Also the front guards had been welded on as the sills were gone in the front now too. And so the project begins.......... I dont have pics of it back so im just going to show what ive done so far. This is it after most or the bad rust was fixed. Here is a list of specs. Today I started to fit the TRD pads and a different set of 86 calipers in the back. Also the T3 traction brackets. They are marked drivers and passengers but thet come from the US so im not sure if they mean their left or mine if you know what I mean. Sort it out tomorrow. Little update. Finished fitting rear traction brackets and TRD pads last weekend. 5 hours to do one side and 45 mins to do the other. Go figure? I think to fit the traction brackets easily your diff mounts have to be brand new not 20+ years old and a rubber mallet would have helped too, instead I had to bash it in with the palm of my hand. ouch! Today I fitted a new 10 row oil cooler. I decided not to be be so fussy how I mounted this one, so cable ties ftw! This one is quite a bit bigger than the 24 row I was originally going to use and due to the emense sucking power of the super loud electric fan it will be kept nice and cool too. The new cooler has a remote mount for the oil filter and im also using a thermostatically controlled adapter in conjunction with the sandwich plate that came with the kit. The lines were pretty long too but I think I have made a descent enough job of keeping it all looking tidy. Just a little update with some new parts purchased and installed. Rear chop of TRD 4.7 kg springs and bumpstops With Revolver coilovers/TRD 5 way inserts and Cusco camber plates Omori gauge install and removal of lighter and chime. Safety 21 6 point cage. Fitted short shifter with 15mm spacer, some interior stuff, some engine stuff but most importantly have finished wheels and final ride height! Had to put NCRCAs back in to space out the 14x7.5j +6 off. in the front with about 3 deg. neg. camber. Rear needs 15mm spacers too. In the long run will put 14x8.5j 0 off. from rear onto front with normal RCAs again and find some 14x9.5j 0 off. or 10j +15 off. on the rear. Oh well, its something. All thats left to do is paint, fit rear glass, some interior and a muffler somewhere in there to quieten it down a fraction. Paint job will be 80's Super GT or Super Silohette inspired. Stripey, stripey. Pics. Strange how you thought 8.5j was so wide and then when you get them you want to go wider. My plan is to completely fill up the wheel wells with 15mm of wheel outside the guard and 10mm clearance inside. Polishing sucky much arse!!
