mk2 gt
Perhaps the housing is slightly warped or something, and each time a new diff head is put in it still blows because of a tweaked axle? Or have you changed the whole diff aswell as the head? no i have just been changing the diff head each time, i have another whole diff setup, i was thinking of changing the whole setup over, what are the differences between the 1600 sport axel's and normal escort ones i noticed someone posted picks up of his axels and the slpines were slightly twisted/wrapped around the shaft but mine were straight

Jonny
Teh 1600 diffs have bigger drums on the back if i remember right, 9 inch instead of 8, and were a lower ratio as well?
mk2 gt
i dont understand diff ratios, i think the diff in my escort is the 1300 diff, thats probably why it keeps blowing also?
Gaz
I dunno if 1600 axles are any larger than normal. Even if they are then it wont help as you seem to be blowing diffs rather than twisting/breaking axles. The ratio of the diff doesnt really have anything to do with why you are blowing them. You sai it started spinning then stopped then started. This is prob what blew it. Id say it was going between 1 wheel spinning to two wheels spining etc. This fucks them exactly like yours has broken. Like I said before, I ran a worked 4age in my escort and I had no troubles. I know a guy running a escort diff behind a V6 and he has no troubles. Mayb the housing is fucked??? Anyways... things to aviod to keep your diff in good nick.. - Dumping the clucth hard. - Spinning one wheel as opposed to two - Swinging O's - Doing a skid off gravel and then onto the road Basically if you do a skid and both wheels spin then its all good.. Not as nice as driving but yeah.. you get the point. Drifitn off gravel onto road etc is real bad as it puts alot of load on those side gears at differant times. I have a Mustang diff thatd go in escort. Ya wont break that.
Gaz
i dont understand diff ratios, i think the diff in my escort is the 1300 diff, thats probably why it keeps blowing also? Diff ratios in referance to escorts. 4.1:1, fastest acceleration lower top speed. 3.9:1, bout the middle of the range diff. 3.54:1, hardest to find diff and the most sort after. Will give best top end. Basically the higher the number the more acceleration. It works hand in hand with the gearbox ratios.
mk2 gt
i tried doing a skid on the first diff i had and only got one wheels going? im not saying im going to do skids but how do i get both spinning with my open diff? without water bleach diesel etc maybe my housing is fucked... any way you can tell my looking at it? maybe i should try the other housing? tramping wont help the diff either will it? all the vibrations will be very bad for it wont it. yea i know you have that mustang diff but at the mo fund dont allow that to happen also when i said it started stopped started etc i ment the wheels were getting traction then slipping then getting traction and tramping a little but not much so the quick changing of the loss and gain of traction wouldnt have been good for the diff thats why the spider gear shattered
Gaz
Yup, that stopping and starting was prob the last straw. You might not have quite enough power/torque to spin both with the wide wheels on. 2 options to spin both. Get LSD or lock Hot the engine up
mk2 gt
what are some of the ways to lock the diff?
Gaz
Suppose I shouldnt really tell ya that on here. You need a welder tho. Its illegal for street use however. It wears tyres down 10 times quicker cause it drags the inside one around corners if not spinning. I wouldnt do it for a street car. To easy to mess up in wet etc.
mk2 gt
yea i thought welding it up would be the only way, i dont really want to weld it up for road use. oh well ill just nana it around untill i decide on a lsd or whatever, if i took my houseing to a diff place do you think they would be able to find out if the houseing is fucked or not?
