Yea the points have to be gapped properly or it will either not start, or run like shit..

That's definitely what it is.

Take the dissy cap off. Put the car in gear. Rock car backwards and forwards. You'll see the cam in the middle of the dissy turn. Rock car until one of the four high points on the cam is running against the contacts. now loosen the screw holding contacts in. Pull one side of the contacts out slightly and tighten the screw. Now in the high cam position the contact points should sit about 0.8mm apart. --I think thats right from memory.
