Just wondering, does anyone know much torque to do the diff flange (what the drive shaft goes on) bolts up to?? The book says 22 pounds but it doesnt seem to work properly because the bolt seems loose but the pinion seems really tight.

Help please, eddie w, do you have any idea?

The pinion has a crush sleeve that preloads the bearings. They are not supposed to be reusable but you can fiddle them with maybe a 5thou shim and retorque.

The pinion nut is tightened till the preload requires 17 inch pounds to be able to turn it (12 i/p without the seal) That is for new bearings and crush sleeve.

If you are using the old bearings and sleeve then shim as above and tighten until you can feel a light drag when turning the flange.

There must be preload on taper bearings.

The side bearings for the crownwheel are tightened until the bearing caps spread by 6 thou. Sounds crude I know but there you go.
