  1. save yourself the coin. get a 1600 an put it on an engine stand an slowly do that up.Chances are you'll spend stupid amounts on this 1300 realise what a mistake it was an end up buying a 1600 anyway.plus if you get a 1600 you don't have to cert it because they are all but identical
  2. I am like so far ahead of you right now
  3. is first on my todo list 2moro. Il polish up all terminals an get its nice an clean, run a big fat super wire from neg term to solenoid/reg/switch an go from there?Il Volt test it after im done to make sure of any changes IF it doesn't work what would you suggest next? EDIT* oh so run the neg to the battery or run it to the gearbox? remembering this is a very old car
  4. Ok from the manual I have this. The armatuar for a manual starter are wave-mound type an the windings from an automatic car are lap-wound. Could someone explain what this means? as we have replaced the windings yes starter looks identical to pics
  5. yea it wizzes an is definitely getting power but just not enough to make it engage or w/e. like it doesn't crank the car at all, just an electrical buzzing noise
  6. that was my mechanics friends first thought. He instantly said its like its got a faulty earth. Tomorrow I will go to supercheap an grab a nice fat earthing cable an give it a try. does anyone know anything about the starter brushes being in 180 backwards?
  7. ok sorry to clarify. the starter is all bolted in nicely. the wires are nice an tight the battery terminals are on as tight as I can get them. the reg/switch which is attached to the body is screwed down but a slotted setup and does have alil play. When we saw this we held it down in place an I cranked but the Voltage did not change still stayed at around 5-6v. Could anyone clarify for me an my friend how we know if the brushes are 180degrees out? is there a way to test this or what am I missing here? EDIT* when we turn with key or short it out it just wizzzes no clicking just wizzing noise like its not getting enough juice
  8. its hard to explain but il do my best. it goes from battery to the switch/reg then from there to the starter.on the other side it goes to the ignition?(assuming sorry I know little about starting circuits), an its just loosely screwed to the body. Il take some pics when we are done testing the switch. on a bench test the switch did click over constantly without any noticeable issues but it has always had a weak Voltage when on car. we* did notice It was loosely hanging from the body of car so I cranked while friend held it down firmly but didn't change... weird thing is until recently the starter worked well enough. it was always abit irregular an often was how do i describe this.... run run run runnnnannnanna run run run runanananannana ? If that makes sense to someone haha.I mean like it wasn't firing noise but just always seemed it wasn't getting correct power/earth connection
  9. thanks everyone for the fast replies, I will go through an eliminate each one by one. Well battery has 12.5v but when cranking the switch or regulator? or what ever its called drops to about 5v when cranking- so neg on battery an positive on switch or reg or w/e (what is it actually called) also how do I test a solenoid? Don't know if this means anything but we also got a slight smell of burning plastic after removing an smelling up close
  10. Ok old car gurus I call on your knowledge for advice once again Starter crapped itself. took it out replace brushes only to find the windings were damaged, So sourced another winding and fitted it to the existing drive gear put it back in can hear it turning over inside but doesn't seem to engage on the gear?(like its not getting enough juice) any ideas what this might be? faulty earth? my friend whos doing the majority of the work(and is a mechanic) thinks the switch might be to blame as its dropping from 12vs to 5-6v when cranking. So hes taken it away to have it tested engine is a 711 1600 crossflow and its an auto in a cortina mk2 It seems to bench test fine an looks to be working but when in car doesn't seem to be getting enough juice to engage? Cheers
  11. thanks for that will give it a go edit, just remembered my starter motor died today so can't test that anyway just yet, but mechanic will look over my rebuild an let me know if anything wasn't upto scratch an il test it after that as well
  12. cheers for the links, im very tempted to give it a go! I've actually just sorted a mechanic friend whos gona do me beer for labour deal building up the generator an starter for me haha but if we can't get it going hes keen to help me convert it. Does anyone know what exact model bracket im looking for? it would be a 1300/1600 escort ghia model alternator and bracket ? and do they line up to the generator holes? (if anyone has one let me know)
  13. more information please what will i need in the way of regulator? I was told generators are pretty good
  14. yea reads 12.6 when turned off an now 12.32 when on. Bummer Might have to take it to an autosparky get them to sort it once an for all. I was considering going down the alternator path, can anyone point me in the right direction for whats needed to do that?
  15. ok everyone, I have gone out an brought a multimeter, When I first had the car running it read out 12.42 V now its gone down to 12.34 volts over the course of 10mins. this is with the heater fan running an occasionally me using indicators. So I guess that means its not charging. Im just re reading what mr bubbles suggested I checked and il have a go now. I think the new battery wasn't fully charged when I first got it as it seems to last alot longer now, can even get a couple trips with the lights on before its needs to be charged again. anyways will update again soon p.s no boot bulbs or the likes
  16. thanks for that, im using type F valvo oil. unfortunately it didn't fix my reverse problem looks like im in for new bands an servo
  17. liking the build! keep up the good work. I'm also in the process of getting bushes an tie rod ends will let you know how I get on
  18. Hi currently filling my trans up an my manual doesn't seem to say anywhere how much oil goes into it? The dip stick is giving me all sorts of crap I really just need to know exactly how much it needs. plz reply asap am out working on car now
  19. sand paper plus files for the curbings, be patient will come up nicely if you take your time an not rush it EDIT* it does depend on what condition they are in, I've taken stuffed mags to bare metal before an then polished. IMO, use nothing less than 800grit paper, anything more will scratch it alot more than need an only prove more work for you.once you get them sanded nicely go up to 2000 grit to remove any imperfections form rubbings. fishing with a wax/cut an polish for mags and they will come up 50times better. you can sand/file minor curbings but you dont want to be taking more than 1-2mm at the most. Get the curbs done professionally for best results
  20. yea i know trust me ive had a horror story mechanic fuck my wrx sti before.not an enjoyable thing.I'm alot smarter now. he said he would have to have a look at it before he could give me a price but if it was just the servo or bands he reckons a couple hundred, I asked for worst case scenario an he laughed and said well you could spend upto a couple grand rebuilding it can't see whats wrong until they take off the pan so will book in with them soon unless anyone says bad things about them ? wondering if its just worth going manual conversion but it ruins my awesome bench seat
  21. talked to a guy at aceomatic trans, he reckoned the fluid sounded like it should be ok(over phone so cant say for sure he said) he also said could need a new servo or possibly has worn bands, reckons a couple hundred dollars(which is abit of a relief) to get it sorted You guys think that sounds reasonable? and does anyone have any beef with aceomatic stanmore road? Unless someone who knows alot about them on here wants to do it for beers an cash?
  22. thanks for the input crazy good to know its not a huge repair and yes its a borg warner...35? not sure but definitely a borg warner well I'm planning on doing some steering work soon so might try get it all done at same time
