  1. I picked this up today

Needs some love (idles from 3.5 - 4k, all bulbs died on the way home, 100km/h is full throttle in 5th(but it will do 110 in 4th!))), on the plus side it is reg'd and wof'd and goes well enough to keep up with traffic.

Feel free to post inspiration here as I'm not sure what direction to take once the gremlins are sorted...

It's a 1980 Suzuki GT200 X5 which is a 2 stroke, twin carb/exhaust/cylinder machine. It has drums up front which do a great job. I'm suspicious they aren't original as it also came with a disc front end and alloy wheels in the pile of spares

  2. My Honda C50 was vinned and registered as a motorbike by a previous owner (lapsed 11 years ago)...now I don't want to pay $450+ a year for rego + wofs.

So I need to register as a moped, obviously!

As far as I can see my options are buy some plates off a wrecked C50/ old Honda scooter...

Or go through re-entry certification with a sympathetic VTNZ chap...

Anyone got any other clever ideas?

OK....so over the last few weeks I've had a few calls to NZTA and I've found out a few interesting things

As of July 2011 the 2 kW maximum no longer applies, as long as it is <50cc and limited to 50 km/h it's fine!

If a bike has been vinned as a motorbike it doesn't need to be entry certified, it just needs a VTNZ chap to inspect and they'll issue new plates ( $130ish with 6 months rego).

  3. The biggest pain is the proof of ownership, ideally a receipt from the last registered owner...but you can usually get away with just a receipt from the person you bought it off plus a declaration from the police that they have no interest in said bike

  4. No wof...but pretty much has to be in woff'able condition, the big change since July last year is that mopeds no longer have to be less than 2 KW (verified by NZTA) provided thye're less than 50 cc and can only do 50km/h...

Hmmmm what year should my C50 be...I believe 1971 has a ring to it...

  6. I got my new widened steels back from chris web by on Friday. Really amazing neat welds and finish and only cost $250! Plus ho know Don hoff well and they are fully certifiable as I need to get my cert plate changed to suit them.

I'll get them sand blasted and then painter at work will put decent paint on.

I thought your wheels were already widened...have you gone even wider? Isaac is thinking about getting his Probox wheels widened, does anything need to be done to them first?
