  1. Also remember the tow vehical MUST weigh more than the trailer and whats on it!!! .

this isnt overly true. consider range/land rovers and land cruisers, dodge rams etc

Based on what exactly? Your personal experience? :doubt: Just because someone has towed a load before without problems, doesn't make it safe.

    http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/glove ... ml#howmuch

based on range rovers and land cruisers being rated to 3500kg braked also the new ranger/bt50 or whatever is rated to 3350kg(they dont weigh 3500kg themselves and dodge rams are rated to 7250kg on 5th wheel) they dont put htese ratings on it for shits and giggles theyre what they are demeed to safely be capable by the manufacturer

    from your link

Most vehicles have tow ratings given to them by the manufacturer specifying the gross trailer weight braked, unbraked, or both, that the vehicle can safely tow. Although the law does not require these tow ratings to be followed, the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) recommends that they be taken into account.
The NZTA recommends, as a guide, that the laden weight of an unbraked trailer should not exceed three quarters of the unladen weight of the towing vehicle and then only if the towing vehicle's brakes and tyres are in excellent condition

If the trailer is equipped with brakes, it may be possible to safely tow a trailer heavier than three quarters of the unladen weight of the towing vehicle, but the seven metres from 30km/h brake performance requirement still applies
    .

what Im saying is that you can safely tow a trailer that weighs more than the tow vehicle if the trailer is fitted with brakes and depending on the type of tow vehicle being used.

EDIT: If what cruiser was trying to say is that a tow vehicle must weigh more than an unbraked trailer that it is towing then yes I would agree (may have slightly misunderstood that sorry)

my 2c i towed my rx7 homefrom tauranga using a hire trailer with brakes on the front axle of the trailer (tandem) the whole vehicle/trailer combo would have been about 3300 - 3500kg and coming down the kaimais the trailers brakes were slowing the whole lot up on their own, I kept putting my foot on the gas to get the trailer brakes to cool off. also i used the hiace (the tow vehicles brakes 3 times coming down the hill). trailer brakes are very good. ive also towed the rx7 around using the same hiace and my old mans tandem which is unbraked (trailer + rx7 weighs about 1400kg) and the van can pull that up VERY fast if needed, the van doesnt get pushed around at all. infact I dont really worry about it too much however if I were towing a larger heavier vehicle then definately would be putting brakes on the trailer for piece of mind/ down hill runs

also as far as tandem vs single axle goes I look at it like this.

a car has 4 wheels not two, therefore why should I be putting a 4 wheeled car on a 2 wheeled car and expecting those 2 trailer wheels to carry the load the the trailer + the weight of a car that is usually spread over 4 wheels.

    tandem > single.

Ive done alot of towing and would only use a tandem.

Kea trailers make nice trailers too btw

  3. how rubbish do lift kits make 4wds when it comes to towing stuffs? do they wallow around?

thinking 80 series landcruiser if that matters

depends on the kit and the vehicle. if you keep swaybars attached and aren't going silly high I wouldn't think it would be a big deal in an 80 series. take of swaybars/make disconnects for offroadtime.

RB30 in any patrol would be puss as shit unless it had the crap supercharged out of it. pratols are really heavy.

biggest problem will be if you raise the 4wd up, your tow ball goes with it so the arse of your trailer will drag pretty damn close to the ground, Just keep it in mind

yea would probably run an adjustable/custom removable one. Trojan make some to suit this kind of problem
