I have tacit approval from the minister of finance to look for a road bike. In my excitement I dug my riding gear out of the attic and I’m officially a fat bastard. Pants don’t fit no more. Her indoors then suggested I reward myself with a bike once the pants fit again. In the olden days I had a CBR600 then a gsx1100 and finally a Yamaha TDM850. I was beginning to enjoy the upright style of the TDM and being old and fat the appeal is still strong. Got a pine on for a Triumph Tiger 800 and I also enjoyed brother in law’s V Strom 1000 when I hooned it last year. Must be an age thing because up to my late 30’s I had always been derisive of BMWs but now when I see one (particularly a massive boxer twin) I take more than a passing interest…
Bonneville, do it.

My understanding is that the ECU restricts it, as well as a reduced dimeter air intake. Looks like you can get a kit for $400 which replaces the ECU and intake and gives you another 7 or so km/h.
Yeah, wouldn't tell anyone if any mods were done....

I needed to fix some overspray on the Stug, but didn't get around to it. That said, I'm about 80% done with the wheels, so touch wood, we should come together for the final bits.
Then I'll try my hand at some weathering.
Keen to pull finger and get it over the line, has taken too long. Also have my eyes on other kits, but will try to restrain myself until I get the Stug done at least.

All i want is the ability to ride around town at 50km/h, I'm not expecting the ability to take pillions and pannier bags etc.

I doubt any insurance Co is going to give the green light to anything that makes it not legal
That was my line of thinking too.

I think if you are used to a 350cc+ motorbike, a 50cc anything is going to be punishing
It was punishing compared to my fxr150 lol.

I see there are 70cc kits for sale, what would be the deal with insurance in that case?
Would you be able to declare it and leave it at that? Of course one wouldn't bother telling nzta of the mod and no cop is ever gonna check (but insurance would still be needed).

Well i test rode a 4 stroke vespa 50cc, fuck me that was dog slow, I gave up when it started to lose the will to live when it encountered a hill. A shame really, as it looked great and even my 6'2" 100kg body was ok on it.
Need to try a 2 stroke next.
/shat my pants when the scooter came to a sudden stop when i tried to clutch in the non-existent clutch.

That's interesting, I'm keeping my eyes open for an older 50cc moped/scooter in Dunedin and there seems to be little out there, but figured given the student population, something will come up in time.

Get more from the 2 stroke. You generally have to restrict a 50cc 2 stroke to be legal, a 50cc 4 stroke needs everything its got
Thanks for the tip, will keep that in mind.

2 stroke vs 4 stroke for a 50cc moped, or both equally dog slow?

Where do youze buy your oil for less than $20 a damn litre?
You don't? well maybe around that, from what I can see when buying it in non-commercial volumes.
I think it was around $100 for 4L on special the other month at supercheap auto.

This thread has got me considering the merits of an EV scooter/moped for daily commuting / doing beer runs on.
Anyone else got an experience with them? keen to see the pros & cons vs a 50cc scooter.
At the moment, the Super Soco TC appeals, as you can ride it like a normal motorcycle.

Nice, so they're classed as a moped in terms of rego etc? That combined with the lack of wof would mean some cheap running costs _b

I've got (counts on fingers) 5 BSAs (sort of, 3 are Dandys) and part of the attraction is that they don't make em any more. Like Datsuns.
Was excited to see they're making em again, but but disappointed in result. Hard to get right though.
A new Goldie with modern reliability would be sweet...
Oh I'd love a Meriden Triumph etc, but $$$ (or lack off) means i can only have one bike. We'll see what the future holds.
I mean this new BSA might miss the mark, but theg might get better at it, like Royal Enfield seems to be over the last 5 or so years.
On that note it looks like the crotch rocket seems to be dying off.

Some people just want to buy into the classic look but don't know or cbf to fetal with carb adjust drums rite sit in the driveway for 5 min warming it up in the morning drive off and forget that the choke on and wondering why it's running rough.
They just drop of to dealer when service due and even get a loaner bike
I'm one of those jokers. Not that I'm afraid to turn a spanner, but because i want a reliable bike for commuting etc. Kinda the best of both worlds in my eyes, get the styling i like, but with but more peace of mind knowing it'll likely start when i need to go to work in the morning.

The new bonneville with the 17" front wheel looks really odd you can't have a retro bike and do that together.
Yes the new goldstar is woefully short of power,
I thought they were 18" front and 17" rear (vs the 19" front and 17" rear on the old wire wheel 865 bonnies). Had a mag wheel 2011 bonnie with 17"s all round and that was quite flickable.

I tend to agree, I'd go for it's direct competitor - the interceptor 650. Plus would prefer a twin 650 over a single.

Triumph made some ok looking fake carbs but failed hard in every other area like proportions of things
I personally like the 2001-2015 Bonneville range and thought they looked the part, provided one didn't kid themselves into thinking it was meant to be a copy of a 1960s machine.

It looks like someone forgot to fit the carburetor and bolted the airfilter to the head and when they were inflating the tire it leaked into other parts of the bike and then got rear ended by a truck and some bicycle parts fitted
I suppose that's one way to look at it lol.
That's something most of the modern classics don't bother to do anymore, is to hide the throttle bodies as carbs.

I see the new 'BSA's are coming to NZ

I’ve just started building USS Voyager. It’s not 1/24th scale but I’ll punch you all with my terrible slow progress anyway.
You’ve been warned!
I think the 1/24 scale aspect of this thread went away a long time ago lol
