Thanks.
Ford making the Escort stuff so close to the Anglia dimensions has made it easyer, I have still had to do it twice though.
What is giving you trouble with your Cortina?
No mine is a 1.6 and 5 speed. The 1.8/6speed ones are selling for good money at the moment.
Should be good though.

I've heard Love Lady race cars do them too.
Find out cuz I have some to get widened aswell
-
Didn't know that Cheryl West lived at your house.
-
Just adding a couple of extra photos.
Before notch...
And after.
Long struts...
And shortened.
Steering column is connected too. No cutting or welding os the steering so the cert man should be happy.
Its a bit crooked now like a Torrana. I can deal with that.
This old wheel won't stay.
I started mounting my calipers today, they should work mint, the Toyota cables won't be hard to adapt to tha Anglia Handbrake.
I will get some 10mm bar tomorrow to cut to this template I made.
Thats enough.

Nice Products are supplied by Davie Holden from memory.
Try them to avoid extra mark up.

Hi. Thanks.
Yes I have thought FE3 the later FS, and BP too.
I have settled on MX5/B6, I like that it is RWD lay out already and cheap. I am trying to do this on the cheap as much as I can so a whole package from an MX5 makes good sense to me.
Those rods sound tempting, not at the moment though, thanks. I will see how I get on with the parts I have already.

Fix your exhaust leak too, it should help your economy and your car won't sound shit.
hahaha can I +like this post?
Am I missing somthing? Sure go for it.
-
Thanks.
Yeah I pulled it appart before I took any photos. The inner tie rod points slight downward to the hub now.
I will mock it up again in the next few days.

.. Does any one know of an strut insert that will fit in my Escort strut that is 50+ mm shorter? ...
Supercheap auto have a huge stack of inserts on the shelf in most locations. As a customer you can walk in, open up the boxes and measure/compare the inserts at your leisure ... pretty useful.
Cheers. Autolign found me some Corolla AE80 ones, They are 40mm shorter. Cheap too.
Any shorter and they would be to short.

Bit more done now.
Diff is almost finished, all assembled, axles resplined, new axle bearings and pinion seal. I have welded up the orignal wheel stud holes and turned the flanges and snouts down, also redrilled the flanges to 4x108.
I also have some S2 RX7 discs that I have bored and redrilled to suit. I still have to make and weld on some caliper mounts.
Also wasn't happy with the way the front suspension was sitting at the ride hight I want to use.
The tie rods are pointing up, same with the lower arm. The inner tierods were getting close to binding. Also with the standard struts I had almost no travel.
Sooo I've cut a 40mm notch in the chassis rail and reinforced it so the front subframe sits up into the chassis this puts the tierods on a much nicer angle.
Also redid my front struts, they are 80mm shorter, with cut down Escort strut tubes, AE 80 Corolla inserts and Anglia tops.
I will try to get some springs for them this week.
Some swaybar mounts have also been made but they sucked so they got cut off and replaced with these.
Hope to see a motor and box this week.
Thanks.

Hi, Fliboi. If you get stuck bring your car round and I will take a look. I can usualy get to the bottom of this sort of thing.
PM me if you want a hand.
-
Don't sell. You won't get much for them, what you do get won't go far. Further down the track you will wish you hadn't sold them and look for to replace the ones you had, they will be half as good and twice the price.
You'll get motivated by them again.
-
Yeah looks fun.
I'm feeling keen for somthing with 4 wheels, pipe tyres, and internal combustion.
-
A bit like this?
It looks fun to me!
-
Yeah it was too. Thanks for the Idea.
With lock stops the kids can opposite lock the whole driveway now.
-
Yeah I added some lock stops tonight, The kids can test it tomorrow.
With out them it was getting pretty out of shape.
I had to convert the other trike to stop them fighting over this one.
-
I don't know if this post goes here, or if anyone cares.
I got this idea off one of Brock-Lee's posts.
A trike for my kids with castor wheels on the back. The result has made me laugh all afternoon.
I like it when my 3 yearold yells "I love doing doughnuts".
.
Version two "drifts" even better.

+1. Welded axles work fine when they are done well.
Often factory axles don't have enough meat on the shafts that the splines can be recut further back. I know Borg Warner VL and XF axles are like this.
Resplining costs more too.
-
Is the VL gear interchangeable with XA falcon stuff? I have a 2.92 XA falcon diff sitting in my shed. Would a XF LSD head go into the XA housing?
I am a bit ignorant on Borg warner obviously..
You can use VL gears in an XA housing with an XF lsd center. It's not a straight swap though. I'm not sure about LSD centers that used 2.77 gear sets thoughhttp://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me ... 669107.htm
your XF LSD would work well in this.
How does the place in Hamilton intend to shorten the axles? for $400 i'm picking they will be cutting and welding them.
What about a mazda diff?http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 907252.htm
Stud pattern is close enough to 4x108 & can get LSD heads too.
Gaz
Be carefull though LSD centers for these could be expensive, it will probably have rotary suitable 4.1/1 ratio too.
-
Start with a Borg Warner so you can atleast upgrade later. 3.0 VL Commodore used a 3.45/1 crown wheel and pinion.
The axles can be welded and redrilled to 4 stud for not much.

Here;
ATLAS AXLES
Baby ... 48.5" long (wide)
Narrow (Mk1 3 litre Capri) .. 50" long (wide)
Standard (Mk2 & 3 Capri) .. 52" long (wide)
Standard Mk1 & 2 Escort Axles: English axle 48.5" wide
Koln: European piece of chocolate fitted to mk2 escorts and to be avoided at all costs
An English matches the dimensions of the baby atlas, however many people incorrectly think a baby atlas is the one fitted to a mk1 3.0 litre capri when in fact that's a narrow atlas. An original baby atlas was a motorsport special order item
True atlas has a 7.5 inch crown wheel, Weak Kolin type has a 6ish inch crown wheel.
Aussie Cortina use Borg Warner 74/75 series diffs like Falcon/Valiant/Commodore. I'm not sure about crown wheel size variations with the Aussie Cortina diff.
In my experience if you want a strong LSD with a 3.5/1 ratio in the back of your Escort you need to...
Buy a Quaife or similar LSD center for your Escort diff with a sport crown wheel and pinion
Or use a Capri Atlas with Quafie or similar LSD center and the gears that came in the Capri Atlas
Or Find a LSD with the right ratio from another car or ute and get it shortened.
Or hunt trade me until you find somthing that will work for you that has been built already.
-
i imagine the diffs aren't so tough.
also the front hubs from stock are grot.
slam a jap front axle and steerign box, and a jap dual rear wheel diff in the arse and a little 4cyl detroit
Onto it. Mazda Titan beam, diff, and steering box, or similar. Z the chassis front and rear or channel the body. New deck as low as will work with ramps.
Use what ever motor and box suits you, Detroit, Titan turbo, 350,
My two cents.
-
Hi wickmyster. I think Baby atlas diffs were never fitted to mass production cars, they were sold as an upgrade for Escort through Ford parts departments. Mk1 capri has "Narrow Atlas" and Mk2/3 has "Wide Atlas".
Watch out also because some earlier Cortinas came fitted with a back hat diff too but it was much smaller/weaker than an Atlas.
Unless you can get a Capri diff very cheap it would be worth finding out about a Quaife LSD and some thin wheel spacers for your Escort diff.

Hydraulic handbrake?
Run the master cylinders in line, or add an extra pair of rear calipers with a separate hydraulic circuit.
