Thought i better start a project thread for my latest toy...
Its a 1980 Series 1 RX7 SA22C
Brought it off one of my mates who has owned for 6+ years, he had lost interest in the car scene
Has barely seen the road in the 6 years that he has owned it..so i plan to changed that
Brought the car on Saturday with a non working clutch, luckily we live right next door to each other so just pushed it over.. Washed of the thick layer of dust and gave it a vacuum to see what i was working, over all its in pretty good condition, few little pieces missing but the important parts are there...
Found a little bit of rust in the doors and some surface rust in other places but nothing to major...
Ended up fixing the clutch on the Sunday, charged the battery and went for a spin last night..reminds me of a hopped up 2 stroke dirt bike (Cars running a 12a J-port)
Need to do a few things for a WOF
Bleed Brakes
Fix some rust
Buy some bulbs
Hope for the best

Hey Kicker,
Are they superstars 14s? if so what width are they and what tyres are you running?
-
I um, am considering selling a set of 14" August Feroce, 6.5 wide from memory.
I allready have 14x6.5 long champs for it but i think ill just find some 15s as i think they suit it better
Cheers though
-
Yea, dish is essential!i think at this stage im going to roll with the 15s and keep an eye out for some 5 stud 15" longchamps on Yahoo auctionsAlso Aarons wagon is so lush!
-
14's look good to me, a little more low or more tire might help though. Just enough to get it sitting how it does in the front.
Yea i dont think i could go much lower, it scraps on enough as it is..also don't want balloon tyres either ...
-
Went to Ivans (RBlover) on NZDatsun and tried his 14x8s on, just wanted to see if 14s would look to small before i go and spend money on my longchamps
Post thoughts here!Nathan -
Oldschool meet at the Greta Valley Pub on Sunday... you are more than welcome to grab a seat in the diesel ceddy. I also had chronic over heating issues with mine when I got it, a replacement radiator and thermostat had it sorted. The temp gauge doesn't go over 1/2 even after some spirited driving..... I also suspect your radiator
Was considering bringing the Ke36 to this, will have to see what funds are like
Yeah my L26 has new everything and sits just below 1/2 in normal operation conditions, FYI.
Yea as it should, I have had plenty of old shitters and anything that moves over half you should shit your pants and check it out properly.
Thanks guys, yea pretty much what i have been doing every time i drive it a fair distance!
Will swap out some pieces and see where i stand
-
Where abouts in christchurch are you? I would be keen to come take a looksy on Sunday
Flick me a PM man, should be free sunday
-
Have you flushed abd back flushed the whole thing - it never got hot with john, and its the same rad and engine - also bypass the heater and try that - i know those heater cores can block up pretty bad. Get the radiator out and have it properly cleaned - i know burnside radiators take the tanks off these and do it properly.
A radiator pressure tester / tk head gasket check will give you the good/bad news if the head gasket is blown - these L sixes do have a tendancy to rot the heads and block out when they sit around full of water with no cooland for years aswell.
The funny thing is this car has always done this for you - old engine new engine etc, the only thing thats diff is the heater side and piping. - if your getting the radiator done get the heater core done too.
We checked w/pump also and i helped do the thermostat - id get another one of those.
Sorry i cant be of any actual help but getting someone to do head gasket checks is a first in my book.
Yea it never used to get up to 3/4, just seems to be a progressive thing that's happened maybe 8 months or so ago and hasnt got worse since
Yes your right this car does like to test me! like i said earlier will be the 3rd headgasket if it is one... i wouldn't say i thrash it either
Will start with the cheaper things and work my way through what every one has recommended and see how it goes, i just want to be able to drive it up some hills and go on some cuises in it with out worrying about it over heating ha

Where'd the motor come from? If it's been sitting for a while half full of water etc they can rust the fins off the water pump.
Motor was out of Johns White brougham 260C that i brought, i checked the fins on the water pump when i put the engine in as my last one in my L20 had rusted away, they were all still there and in good condition
-
I mean is it pushing any water out the cap noticeably? any bubbles? see how hot it actually is getting then contemplate some more.
It doesn't push water out currently (with no thermostat) under normal operation drove a good 100km with out it going over 3/4, but had a we play in the my old mans paddock in the wet for 2 or so minutes and it shot up from 1/2 to in the red extremely fast and started bubbling into the overflow
When i tried putting the thermostat in it overheated and was bubbling within 1km of home
-
Yup put a semi decent aftermarket gauge on it and see what's actually happening.
But yea there isn't much that can go wrong here. With no thermostat, a good water pump and radiator you should sit dead cold at speed and warm up to where the fan comes in when sitting still/around town. After that its either something weird or head-gasket land. Is it using/pushing water?
I hate headgasket land! been there twice already (on my L20), L-series don't seem to agree with my driving habbits
Not using any liquid, not enough for me to notice anyway, water also appears to be flowing or pushing as you put it
-
If the radiator is the one from the white Brougham it's already been cleaned and tested by a1 radiators. , it had to have an outlet resoldered too.
I'd be getting a gauge as my green one was the same at around 3/4
Just the man i was hopping to here from
yup is the radiator out of the white brougham, i thought it i remember you guys said it had been but wasnt sure!
i can get a new gauge and try it but that wouldn't explain why i cant run a thermostat in it.....
-
So tried a aftermarket gauge and figured out actually how hot its getting? definitely look into getting that radiator rodded, if the water pump is actually good and the rad isn't blocked it doesn't sound good.
Not aftermarket, Pulled a gauge from a 260c i scrapped.
i will get radiator checked out and rodded in the coming week and see if that remedy the situation
by "doesn't sound good" are you thinking it could be a head gasket? (if it turns out that the radiator and the WP are fine)
Already stated but getting radiator checked would be my first step.
Will get done in next week and report back, cheers
-
Have you tried a different temperature gauge?
Yup, replaced the gauge and the sensor, no difference
-
Yea they take a tank off and put a dip stick like thing through each tube. Cleans out all the crap. I too have had a radiator tested that turned out to be full of crap. Got it rodded and it solved my hot running issues immediately.
Cheers man
What am i looking at getting stung to get it rodded? and is there anything you would recommend getting done aswell while they have the tank off
-
Get the radiator rodded.
I believe the radiator was checked over before i got it (could be wrong, i will check with him)
Does roding just clear all the built up gunk in the radiator?
headgasket?
I thought this, but i would expect either gunky oil, white smoke out of the exhaust, or it actually overheating (going past the 3/4 mark)
-
Hi guys,
Just starting to look into why my L26 is running hot..just want to get your ideas before i go buying a heap of new parts
Background
Old L26 6 cylinder in my Gloria is running hot (sits at 3/4 on the gauge on the open road, just over half on around town)
Its never gone past the 3/4 mark, but being that my old engine used to sit around 1/4 and barely get close to 1/2 i am a little concerned...
It currently doesn't have a thermostat in it, i tried putting one it but it just started to cook itself (went above the 3/4 mark) with a thermostat in
When i put he engine in the Water pump seemed to be in good order
I have been told the radiator was in good condition (I trust the person who told me) i have checked it out and i tend to agree
The viscous van works, i even have a electric fan on the switch hooked up aswell
So what else does that leave to be making the engine run hot??
thanks in advance
Nathan

That chin spoiler looks awesome, I've been waiting to see how a 230/330 would look with one on it.
Cheers man, year i wasn't sure how it was going to look, but i really like it, makes getting out the driveway a bit harder though!!
