  1. Did abit more work on the engine yesterday, didn't really spend that much time on it. Only repainted the block & head, stuck the core plugs in, bead blasted the oil pump and housings + rebuilt the oil pump as it was shanked. Had a bit of staining from some shit inside it but got all the clearances in-spec so should be all good. Was a bitch when i painted the block as there was a fucking split down the nozzle. Taped it up then sprayed it with shit drippin out everywhere.

Going to be cleaning up all the bolts, bead blasting & re-plating them with that zinc gold stz and finishing off the assembly this weekend hopefully :D

I will be finishing the assembly next weekend, I've gotta pick up 1 more Core plug (40mm) for the head then it's good to go. I will be repainting the head and block black and will be blasting all the other housings and what not to get em looking brand new + re zincing all the bolts.

  3. my chevette use to run like absolute shit aswell, miss firing all the time. The carb caused this (think the diaphragm was fucked), have since upgraded to a 28/36 and it runs preeeemo. so it would definately pay to give the carb abit of attention

  4. Yea been a bit caught up at unitec with my final assignment and getting my portfolio together and i havent spent much time on this.

After trying to exchange the piston rings for some that would actually fit, according to the ACL archives these were the correct rings and they wouldn't give me a refund or exchange em and they told me to go see an engine specialist and get the piston re grooved to make em fit :(. Anyways as of today i bead blasted the pistons and theyre gonna be brought in to get the piston pins removed and regrooved so the rings will fit, after the bead blasting only piston 2 was a bit ragged with a bit of scoring but that should polish out and they will all be like new, then finally i can assemble the engine! slowly getting there :D sorry bout no pics.

Oh yah ive also been collecting manuals and brochures. Ive got 2 owners hand books, haynes manual, mirage/tredia/precis manual, 2 different australian manuals, the NZ manufactured 1.4l mirageII turbo brochure and the second gen mirage turbo marketing flyer thingy.

Edit: Also the 1.8L cordia gearbox and half shafts arrived 2 weeks ago from the mighty southland. Ive been told its only done 110,000kms and looks to be in very good nick. measured it all up and it should go in easy as.

  5. Ive got the same problem with my chevette. When i chucked in the 28/36 weber after taking it for a drive the throttle would stick at a rather high rpm. I thought that maybe setting up another cable with a return spring pulling in the opposite direction of the accelerator would solve this or a bigger return spring? havent got around to it though

  6. So got down to a bit more work on the engine today. Was hoping to reassemble it today but after cleaning the block down, honing the cylinders and measuring the piston ring gaps i came to a halt as i found out that the piston rings are bloody wrong  damn you ACL! haha gonna go return them tomorrow and hope they give me the right ones this time. grr

  7. Damn forgot to take pictures again yesterday...

Anyway, ive now completely assembled the reconditioned head and set the valve tappets. Also i will be re-boring the cylinders and assembling the engine in two weeks. Meanwhile i picked up full-time work for the holidays so will have a bit of coin to purchase some goods in a few. Shits finally coming together :compress: hopefully will have the thing running in a month!

    Peace

Edit: Forgot to mention i hit up pick-a-part on Saturday and unfortunately the Mirage the i salvaged some bits off a while ago isnt there anymore :( and didnt have the correct socket to remove the hub nut to nick some bits from the next gen mirage. will probably go again soon with more tools .

  8. Its been a long time since i last updated this thread so its about time i make a post (sorry ive got no pics)..

Been slowly gathering bits and pieces and started reconditioning and rebuilding the engine with the help of Tony Lynch. Ive only been able to work on the engine once every second week or so for a few hours when Tony's been available so progress has been very slow but good, learned alot of new things aswell. currently i have completely stripped the engine down and have been reconditioning the head. All the valves have had the carbon cleaned off and the seats ground and refitted with new guides.

Here's a list of parts ive collected over time...

-Complete set of seals and gaskets

    -water pump

    -ngk sparkplugs and leads

    -premium chrome plated piston rings

    -2.5" coby Resonator and Muffler

    -Td04l turbo

    -hks ssqv bov

Also picked up some dash bits and pieces from pick-a-part including a dashcluster & surround, heater controls & clock and a window wiper delay module haha + a rear bumper.

Ive also had the crankshaft ground back and got a new set of bearings to go, also thanks to 'Southern hardstyle' ive got a set of 14x6" 2 piece Hoshino Impul's that ive cleaned and repainted the same colour as the rocker cover minus the prizmatique stz.

In other news.. at unitec last week i checked the rear drums and wheel bearings, all in good nick plus the old grease has been removed and replaced but unfortunately when i was tightening the handbrake cable, the thread snapped and now ive gotta go hit up pick-a-part to find a replacement cable :( and a few weeks before that the stainless steel capping on the front bumper flew off on the motorway by the taka on/off ramp. Luckily my mate picked up for me and it was still in good condition minus a few little scratches. Ill make sure i bring the camera this weekend as i will be working on the engine and will upload some pics.

  9. Hey mate,

been following your build since that start. Amazing work really and also a good read just like your rotavette and rx3 builds. Reminds me heaps of the house my mum n dad built in Whitianga that i was raised in (had the woodburner stove and stained glass windows etc aswell + my dads handcrafted furniture). Keep up the hard work, cant wait to see it finished!

  10. Theres a place in Wairau/Glenfield called Auto colour Matrix(Paint/Panel place) who offer apprenticeships. Might be worth Asking if they have any spots available. My mate went there for an apprenticeship and she said theyre bloody brilliant and all gc's and shes loving it. worth a shot contacting them if you wanna head into that direction.

  11. dunno if this helps but with the engine running hold a metal rod(or screwdriver) up to the injector housing and listen for a constant ticking noise. do this to each injector(think theres 2 from memory). this should help you clarify if the injector/s are playing up eg if theres no ticking or an irregular sounding tick

woops just read over your post and realised that youve already clarified that the injector isnt spraying fuel. my bad
