  1. Haha mine doesn't sound like a rotor. It sounds like a tractor. It hasn't been used much of the last couple years, and does sit for extended periods of time occasionally (2 weeks or more). I did just get new leads (couple were toast), and I have new plugs and a new dizzy cap to put in aswell so that might fix the problem. I can compression test it, and this would tell me if there is valve trouble right? From what I have found it should be 8.7:1, i.e. all cyl around 128 psi ?
  2. Sweet picture. Thanks. I've also heard that if it the leads are bent too sharply it could cause a gap and the spark will be wrong? The leads are new, but they were basically whatever we could find that would fit. One of more may be a bit tight and be bent a bit too much
  3. True, Black/wet = no spark? Dry = no fuel?
  4. Hi, My Vauxhall 1256cc is running on 3 cylinders a lot, sometimes it will start on 3 and then when it warms up the 4th will kick in. Being that it is Carbueretted, its most likely to be electrical thats the problem right? I haven't checked spark on that cyl yet, I will tonight but is there anything else i can check? Last night when I checked it was cylinder 3 that was the issue so since its one of the middle cylinders the problem is likely to not involve lack of fuel? Or could it be something like a sticky intake valve or something? Cheers
  5. Well, kind of need a way to tell the difference between cast iron and alloy. Its hard when everything is covered in grease... Can I use a magnet or something?
  6. Oh yeah I saw that actually considered it, but in Nelson though... yuck. Plus my running gear is in pretty good nick for the time being
  7. Yea i agree, thats what made me like it. The uniqueness and the grandad factor
  8. My wagon has a sweet lean on it too. Makes it easier to get in
  9. Project: http://www.oldschool.co.nz/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=23838 Would love to hear your guys input. Cheers!
  10. Since I wanna make it reliable, first thing is the cooling system. Call me fussy but I dont trust a car until it has a new water pump and cambelt/timing chain. Found a sweet NOS water pump and a new timing chain to suit which I'll chuck in when I get some spare time. Also plan on tracking down a new alternator and starter motor which I'll store in the boot incase of failure. (Paranoid I know). The alternator looks like its from WW1 and the starter motor solenoid is dodgy at the best of times. Lucas ACR Alternator I think? The starter does NOT look like its gonna be easy to swap out, you can see the top of it tucked in behind there. According to my manual you only need to take off the Alternator to get it out, but to me it looks like it'll hit on an engine mount and the exhaust first.
  11. So I went to start it the other day and it wasn't happy. It was running on 3 (or maybe even 2!) cylinders. Atleast 1 dodgy lead was the culprit, the connector had broken off and it was just jammed in the hole. Then I had a look at the dizzy cap, which was worn to all buggery. Out with the old and in with the new. Sorry about the crap photo - flash wasn't required. Heater hoses have been like that for a while, old owner reckons it was like that when he got it. Must have been a leak or something in the heater system so they bypassed it. Might have a look at it if I can be assed (a.k.a probably not). Not having a heater doesn't really worry me, plus not far till summer now right!?
  12. Plans are to keep it pretty factory and just work on making it a bit more reliable. Need to mess around with the suspension so it doesn't handle like a cloud so much. Got me some gauges so I can keep better tabs on its health, cause I really want to be able to drive this thing when where and how ever far I want. I'm not into all this ricey bs so I found a nice concealed spot for them under the centre of the dash where they wont stick out like dogs balls. Its not finished yet, (Im not going to leave the ground there, just testing!) Took damn near forever to get the wiring right. Had to get an adapter for the oil pressure (as it came with some bs metric sender!)
  13. Discussion: http://www.oldschool.co.nz/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=23852 About a month ago I got the itch and went and had a look at this thing. Wasn't specifically what I was looking for but when I saw it I had to have it. It's a 1976 Vauxhall Viva Estate, with 1256cc's of inline 4 cylinder glory. Actually surprisingly zippy, but its main downfall is the ratio in top gear, which severly limits it's open road capabilities (actually the speed wobbles do a good job of limiting it's abilities too). This thing is in mint factory condition, couple supermarket dings and some Very minor rust at the bottom of one front guard and one rear guard. On the way home from picking it up the wing mirror unfortunately came off when I was FLYING down the road at 105km/h. I looked for it for ages but couldn't find it in the roadside Skinny wheels FTW: My two wagons, brothers in arms:
  14. hey I just bought a 1976 Vauxhall Viva HC, gonna start a build topic soon. Dont really know anything about these cars, what kinda suspension/brake upgrades suit these cars? Handles like a waterbed on a cloud ! Someone mentioned commodore running gear? what sort of commodore?
  15. But correct me if I'm wrong - repairing it would mean chopping it out and replacing it and then painting it. The car only cost me $200
  16. One of our cars got driven into and has damage just next to the sill, wondering if its gonna stop it from getting a wof?
  17. cheers man hopefully i get it sorted tomorrow. You in hamilton? I owe you a box!
  18. hey man thanks for your help! Line 3 comes from the little seethrough filter bowl which has the feed from the tank then? Does it matter which one of 1&2 go where? so 4 doesnt actually need to go anywhere then? cause there was a pipe hanging off it which wasn't long enough to connect to anything and I couldn't work it out, I just left it unconnected cause i figured it was something like that.
  19. I've just replaced a 4g63 SOHC 8 Valve Carburetor engine in a L300 van. Can't get it to start, its not getting fuel (spark is sweet, plugs are bone dry). I can't remember how the fuel lines connected to the intake manifold so I probably got it wrong, i took some photos before i took the old eng out but they are not really clear. Where are each of the lines on the fuel pump thingy (whatever the hell this is) supposed to go? From what I can tell a couple suck and a couple blow. Any help or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
  20. haha damn, cause thats why im changing the studs, so I can run hotwires.. the studs are too long (and for some fucked up reason imperial thread) for shank and washer wheel nuts
  21. Hi, some monkey has drilled out the wheel hubs on my ke36 to fit larger wheel studs. Since I want to change the studs back to standard I was wondering what sort of strut+brakes I could use as a replacement to the standard ones for a bit of a brake upgrade perhaps, or just anything that will work because it seems like everyone is buying ke30 struts/hubs at the moment and nobody is selling them!
  22. oh dude, just realized your pulling out a 5k.... i wouldnt mind one of them... hit me with the hook ups haha, i'll even help you pull it out and put the 4age in Did i mention I have a 36 4dr in the build, almost finished
  23. Why mention it then? Most people on this site seem quite trust worthy don't think you would get any problems. Are you borrowing this for said 4age conversion? look at his post count, 2, id say if he came to a otp hed change his point of view very quickly, can think of 2 others straight away anyways. and yeh id say tiz for said 4age conversion yeah im sorry you're right, it does make me sound like a bit of a cunt hit me up if you still need one, im sure we can sort something out. Im back in hams on the 1st
  24. I got one in hamilton, but I dunno if I wanna lend it out to someone I dont know, they are rather pricey oh and its not actually mine it just lives in my garage
