I can kinda understand the blind brand loyalty not that I personally have it.

Sure I could say I hate Kias or something but at least theres a valid reason if theyre actually inferior to other similar products. For most people who HATE a brand theres no real reason for it. Fords vs Holdens being the perfect example
everything that ford/holden do is done as cheaply as they can possibly get away with. when i lived in melbourne i was toolmaking for a small outfit that did die and tooling work for ford, holden and toyota. the ford and holden stuff was fucking criminal. if you fail as an engineer but probably would have made it as an accountant, go work for ford/holden.
the quality of the ethos behind what they do is sub human, ive worked on just about every kind of car that is commonly available and they are fucking terrible.
i have many examples (which ford/holden owners will begrudgingly accept) of the shit things they have produced over the years.
i close my rational with a quote by Henry Ford himself "dont build it to a standard, build it to a price"

your car is looking fuckin good man, if i were you i would get all the "insides" painted now, chuck in your motor etc then paint the out side. job done.

right about now is where i should start wanking on about how he's never going to finish it, but the look in his eyes when he said "ive got a plan!" left me awe struck and in a state of some confusion. given that and the recent progress i reckon well see the finny cruzin the streets in about, oh, 7 minutes.

don't paint it with POR 15.
POR 15 is useless at sticking to smooth surfaces, like a piece of mild steel for instance.
the paint will end up inside your engine which isn't the best place for it.

I work as an Engineer and a Metallurgist. 5 years at varsity and ten years in the trade.... it's kinda "what I do"

you can weld your engine bay as long as the part is not cast or forged steel.
if you are unsure ring an engineer. they will more than likely give you an answer over the phone.

ive delt with this probelem before.
basically, as Mike-e said, your ecu is getting the wrong/no signal from some sensor.
the toyota ecu's have two seperate bits, one for strat up and one for running. the start up ecu needs fuck all in the way of feedback, but once its running (over 800RPM i think) it switches over to full ecu. at this point the ecu finds that one sensor/plug/fucking anything is missing and shuts the whole shabang down.
get the error codes and work from there. you will be fucking around for AGES trying to find what piss ant little thing is fucked without them.
